So it replaced 32 computer servers, based on the time-tested Unix operating systems, at an average cost of $50,000 each, with 40 Linux servers, at $3,000 a pop.

Why in the world did each server cost them anything? They already had 32 servers, and I am sure Linux would have ran on them, so why didn't they save the 96,000 and just use existing hardware..

In addition, they make it sound like "Unix Hardware" is more expernsive than "Linux Hardware", which while Linux works on just about anything, I don't see why they didn't use 3,000 dollar each machines for Unix in the first place. I don't see a 47,000 difference, unless they were stupid and just scrapped important stuff like memory, RAID, good mobos, redundant Power supplies, etc...

The Unix servers took 17 hours to calculate how much cash the bank needed in reserve to offset its investment risk. The Linux servers made the same calculation in 11 minutes

I don't think that if they had ran the same software on the unix servers, with the same hardware, that they would have had a speed increase really. Perhaps it was that they upgraded to new servers for the Linux, and used 8 year old Unix servers? That would make a good speed difference. I am glad that Toms hardware doesn't measure that way....

Oh, an yea, I like linux, but this article is backwards.

You'd have to buy 68 CDs/albums a year for for 100 years to have half a terrabyte of mp3s. Assuming average song length of 3.5 minutes and 11 tracks per cd, and 256kbit mp3 encoding, and rounding up. ~6800 CDs worth is an impressive album collection, unless you're working at/for a radio station, which for some reason has all the songs on mp3 format. Technically though if you paid $11 per cd you'd have to pay roughly $74,800. Based on the benchmarks here
it would take 17.625 days of processor time to encode all 74,800 mp3s with Lame, on a P4 2533 MHz. That isn't including time to rip from CD.
OTOH it would only take 30 minutes of saturating an OC-48 connection to fill that half a gig.

I've been using the CVS version for a while now to run WCIII; it runs at 100% full speed, with nvidia cards you get even faster framerate than on windows.

Really? Do you have any informal comparison numbers to backup your claims? Because if you check the WineX 2.0 article, it clearly shows that direct3d games do NOT run at "full speed" nor "faster" in WineX/Linux than Windows.

At lower resolutions, games like Quake3 and Max Payne run 1/3 the speed compared to Windows 2000. Crank up the resolution, and watch the gap decrease a bit...but it is still half the speed of its Windows counterparts.

Of course, I think the merits of WineX are its game compatability; it's absolutely awesome that it can run recent games like WC3.

The community of Wine developers recently voted to switch to the GNU LGPL license (similar to the one used by the Linux kernel). This a problem for TransGaming because WineX uses proprietary interfaces needed by most Windows games for copy-protection. In order to comply with the LGPL, TransGaming would need to release all the source code in WineX. According to their reading of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), this is against the law in the United States. Instead, they have decided to keep working from the current code base and not use any Wine code released under the new license. The "ReWind" project will be the development site for the forked version of the code. Unfortunately, this means that TransGaming will not be able to take advantage of future enhancements to Wine made by other developers, and the Wine project will not get any of the work done by TransGaming. Realistically, they had very little choice, since the majority of Windows games use copy-protection. The Wine project will continue as usual at winehq.

It will be interesting to see how much of a foothold ATI's Radeon 9700 can get before nVidia's new card actually hits shelves. As this article points out, nVidia has trumped ATI's latest graphics card almost immediately after it becomes available with an even more powerful one of their own. Hmm, I don't know about your experiences but I've found Intel's to be more reliable.

Ok so the AMD's have more performance, but they run hotter and are more liable to blow up (yeah ok, no evidence to back this up), The Intel chips jut seem to be built to more conservative tolerances.

Just my 2 cents I guess...
