Palm comes in dead last
I think after the MR (Maintenance Release) by palm for both Sprint and Verizon the Treo 700P(alm) platformat comes in last. I say this because after this update not only does it fix little bugs but causes even bigger ones. The #1 issue now is the fact that the MR has destablizied the data connection. I personally received my replacement phone from Verizon on Friday with the MR already installed. The phone was solid for two days and now I cant even connect. Not intermittenly connect which is typical of the "Error 3000" we get after the update. But Zero connectivity at all. People are scrambling to get a phone with an older revision on them (1.06 Verizon, 1.08 Sprint). As one person puts it, having no data is a show stopper for me. Its insane as whats happened to palm. So Im curious who other Palm Treo 700p users on here that can confirm this. Heres a rant of mine that I posted last night because I've been sitting without zero data connectivity for two days now. http://discussion.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=
1 326400&postcount=94 So if this device cant connect to the internet its obvious that it can't even compete. I think Palm has the best viewing on a portable device since I have my work blackberry to compare it to. But what good is it if the phone cant even connect to the internet. Its not verizon's fault on this (totally). Its Palm's fault for not doing enough TESTING before this. I call the Treo 700p SPrint MR to the stand which literally bricked phones left and right. We rest our case your honor. -
OMG this thing is the biggest ever
And they havent even sold one unit!
I really can't wait for the iPhone to come out.
I've been dying for a phone with 3G capabilities and a decent web browser, bluetooth, and the ability to play all my divx files and nes games!
All for the reasonable price of 150 bucks! -
Where does it say that?
I see that it will run widgets, but not that you will be able to install 3rd party widgets. And I see people debating whether it will be able to ( http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?
t =134376 ) but no solid answer. -
Re:Another inaccuracy
To make a custom rom, you'll need Grack's Rom Tool. At one point you could simply download a custom rom, but PalmOne asked Shadowmite to take them down and he did. You'll have to use the tool to extract your rom, modify it, and reload it on the phone. Use this list (danger: pdf) to determine what you can and want to delete. I got rid of everything I don't use, from the tutorial to VersaMail. I added a small handful of programs I can't live without, like pFuel, CMDBar, CMDWay, DA Launcher, and SharkNav. Some apps won't work from the ROM, and cause a soft-reset loop; check against this list and above all, don't panic. I'm told it's next to impossible to brick a Treo 650 with this tool, although the old method was very dangerous, and I haven't had it happen with either. If you install an app that doesn't like running from ROM, you can warm-reset with up+reset pin and flash an updated rom. If you try apps that aren't on the list, this may take some considerable trial and error. Make careful lists of everything you change in case you need them.
You can add as much as you delete and a little more, but the smaller you keep the ROM, the more dbCache space you have. The dbCache is the memory where NVFS-based PalmOS copies the programs and runs them from; a lot of instability comes from dbCache issues. You should also check out dbCacheTool (page isn't english, but the app is) and Resco Locker; the former will automatically clear the dbCache when it runs low, and the latter will lock apps into the cache. Some instability is caused by background programs that do not properly lock themselves.
As far as app selection goes, whether ROM or RAM, that's trial and error. If you hit ##377# in the phone app on a Sprint phone it will show you what crashed the phone. Using RLock on the app may stabilize it, or just delete it. You can read this Shadowmite.com forum thread for more ## codes, but 377 is the only one I ever use. Also, this is for the 650 only! The 600 is not supported and probably never will be, at this point; the 700p is coming but it's not ready yet. -

Re:US needs to be more like Europe
I work for Cingular, and we DON'T give out unlock codes, ever, no matter who the customer is or what they say.
Outright false. As in, you are talking out of your ass, whether you know it or not. I don't use a GSM phone due to problems with a past hearing aid not being GSM compatible (I have a Sprint Treo 650, and I'm also way past my 2-year contract so I'm going to stay monthly, thank you) but there's lots of Treo 650 users who have successfully unlocked their Cingular Treos.
TreoCentral.com - Getting unlock code from Cingular (pretty painless)
TreoCentral.com - Unlocking your Cingular GSM Treo 650MEN...my Cing Treo 650 is now unlocked
There's lots more threads about how much of an asshole you (as a cingular support rep collective) are, though, and I'm never going to use your shitty service because of your rude treatment of customers who just want to be able to do what they want with something THEY PAID FOR. They bought the phone, they're paying you back by guaranteeing you X years of service. Stop being such a bunch of whiny crybabies when people figure out your game and decide they're not going to put up with your fake restrictions. -

Re:But it adds an ugly 'wart' on your phone
To get 4GB to work, you need a custom ROM that upgrades the file access to fat32. It's also said to double the drive access speed. More info at treocentral.

Re:Goto Treocentral.com.
Go here for all the scoop;
http://discussion.treocentral.com/forumdisplay.php ?f=70
The peeps I know that have a T650 swear by it and have had a great experience. The latest updates from Sprint and Palm fix several issues for the unlucky peeps that did experience true problems.
If you read through Treocentral to get a basic understanding, things should go smoothly. I've notice that the peeps that had the most problems did things like not charging the phone when it was first opened. A requirment for all devices of this type. Or they loaded it up with tons of old Palm apps from the begining, apps that didn't plaly nicely with the new hardware. For the most part, user error.
Do not go with Cingular. -
This is news, how?
Yes, Shadowmite hacked DUN. About 8 months ago.
Also, all unlocked GSM Treos have had this capability from day one, and Sprint just released a firmware update that officially enables this capability in all Sprint Treos... so how is this news, exactly? -
Re:Sprint "Vision"
I believe you can run an IP connection from your PC through the Treo, but I haven't verified that.

Re:What?
I for one own a Treo 650, and I don't feel ripped off.
TreoCentral has an article about this topic on their website: http://treocentral.com/content/Stories/502-1.htm
From the article: "palmOne's President Ed Colligan commited back in October to releasing official palmOne WiFi drivers for the 650, but no timeframe has been announced to date. From Direct from palmOne, "'We do have a wifi card that will work in the SD slot, but we do not have the drivers yet.' Colligan continued to say that palmOne will be working on creating the necessary drivers."
Doesn't sound to me like Palm was trying to rip me off; maybe they are a little slow to introduce drivers, but then again they haven't even gotten around to releasing the 650 for anything else than Sprint.
The fact that someone is interested enough in the device as to make hacks and other tweaks to it shows it has a strong following. This is one of the reasons I decided to purchase a 650. -

kidlatj: "For all the Treo 600 members with their fingers crossed,
Sorry to break the bad news guys, after several more crashes we have decided to research the different processers and found out that the T600 has the TI OMAP 144MHz processer where all the devices that are included on the driver (also the T650) are built around the Intel XScale (PXA 270). So the code in the palm driver is written in the language specific to a different processer. I'm not saying that it is impossable, just Palm might have to release a new driver that is OMAP specific. I will definatly keep on this, but this is the current problem." -

It is not you, http://treocentral.com/ is a much better website and has way more information.
See this thread for more information about WiFi drivers on the 650.
Also this thread has some useful information on a patch that was obtained by someone that fixes problems with the sound quality of the Treo 650 microphone. -

Re:Much of this has been fixed now...
And from the Treo 650 spec sheet: 23MB user-available stored non-volatile memory [doesn't list program memory - I believe it's 32MB]
The two figures you mentioned (32MB and 23MB) are not additive, and is a cause for much "anger" among the early adopters. It's a total of 32MB memory, but the new file system is based on constant sized blocks of 512K, which effectively gives you about 23MB us usable memory. A lot of users that are upgrading from the Treo 600 to the Treo 650 find that their address book will not fit because of the decreased capacity.
Some users have found workarounds - by using a large SD card (I just bought a 1GB card for $50!) and a 3rd party application launcher, such as Z-Launcher, you can launch applications from the SD card. (You couldn't do that natively). -

Re:Forget the cables, use bluetooth
I'm thinking of upgrading my Palm Tungsten T to a Treo 650 (or its successor), to get rid of my Motorola Startac. Can the Treo get my laptop online via Bluetooth and DUN?
Currently, I do dial-up networking on my laptop using my Startac and an Ositech card but it's relatively slow--19.2kbps. I have a Verizon ISP dial-up account for $10/month, just a supplement to DSL for travel purposes or when DSL is down. If the Treo can replace this Ositech/Startac system, then it sounds like a great solution, but only if I don't need to hack my Treo to get DUN working!

Outlook server?
Novell offers the Open-Xchange server for SuSE (and other Linux) as their groupware replacement for MS Exchange. But to connect to it with Outlook, you have to install their MAPI store, iSLOX, on the client machine. Yesterday, PalmOne announced they've licensed the Exchange server sync protocol, so they can offer Outlook-type clients, that connect to actual Exchange servers, without the (usually clueless) client user having to add any software at all. Sure, it's criminal for Microsoft to lock down their protocols, locking competitors out of the market they dominate. But at least they're licensing it to competitors now. Novell's got a lot of money; why don't they license it to include an "Exchange stub" in their O-X server?

BETTER camera app for the 600
The camera in the 600 is crippled by way of the software. A prog called "PickEm" lets you monkey with the settings. It's a slight improvement and a crude hack, but it's pretty cool all in all. Posted on the forum here

The original source is TreoCentral.com
The original source for the images, was a user who posted them on TreoCentral.com. All linked sites above reference TreoCentral.com as the orginal source.
They were first posted here: Discuss.TreoCentral.com
TreoCentral also was the first site with reliable information about the Treo ACE - most specifications came from an article that they had posted in July, but was quickly pulled. A mirror of that original expose can be found here. -
Re:Huh.
For one thing, it's 50% longer than regular SD cards. I assume it sticks out the top of the slot, and that's most likely where the antenna resides. The chipset probably fills up the rest of the card (inside the slot).

Re:New Treo 600
PalmOne's new SD WiFi card will not work with the Treo 600. treocentral.com has an explanation as to why it will not work with the Treo 600. Yeah, it would be sweet to have Palm/WiFi/Bluetooth/CDMA, but it appears we're going to have to see what happens with the Treo "Ace" rumored to be available sometime in the Fall.

Re:Will it work with the Treo too?
According to this story at TreoCentral, it will not work with the Treo 600. But since you (and I
;) ) get Internet anywhere there's a cell signal, it shouldn't be too much of a loss. All I can say is I'm glad I have the unlimited data plan. ;) -

palmtop
My Treo 600 gets 4-6 hours active use (talking, MP3 playing), 4-6 days intermittent use (up to 10 days with powersaving scheduled shutdowns). I haven't tested video playback, but it's probably comparable to MP3 playing, maybe 3-5 hours.

GNU/uCLinux/Treo600?
My Treo 600 is a fully integrated (stereo, DSP) audio player, (Palm) PDA, and (CDMA) mobile phone. Its network HW includes a 100-128Kbps radio for Internet connections, in addition to CDMA voice and SMS/MMS. Other peripherals include SD/IO slot, USB (slave) RS-232, VGA camera and color touchscreen. But this brilliant smartphone runs only PalmOS5. Which is adequate, but not nearly as flexible as Linux. Who's porting, say, uCLinux to this cutting edge networked computer?

Re:Interesting...UMTS is based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology that supports data rates of up to 384 kilobits per second
Unfortunately Real world speeds of GSM approach that of a 56k modem. Hardly something to write home about. Maybe with this UTMS they will reach 384 kilobits/s of real world speed. Still, if this UMTS is 1/10 of the advertised speed, it will be a usable speed for surfing the web. 56k speeds just don't cut it for pulling down image-laden webpages anymore. -

Blackberry as Treo application?Blackberry devices can have more functionality than is immediately apparent. They come with a web browser, and an SSH client is also available, along with a few other third-party applications, but in general developers for Blackberry platform are rare, and freeware/sharware is all but nonexistent.
Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the Blackberry, licensed their keyboard design to Handspring for the Treo, and has also issued licenses for the Blackberry "push" email software for PalmOS. No software has been released, but a Treo client application for Blackberry may not be far off.

Treo 600
I had Kyocera 6035 for a couple of years. Then I switched to Handspring (now PalmOne) Treo 600. I have been using it for over 6 months (since the week it came out in stores).
Treo 600 is the best smart phone on the market. I have sprint as my provider and also have their vision professional pack for $15 per month extra that allows me UNLIMITED web access. I have not used the SMS much but I mainly use my phone for voice calls which are of great quality, it has an awesome speaker phone, it does have a decent camera (cameraless versions to be available soon), included keyboard is the best. I also use my phone to check work email using Sprint's Business Connection software (don't need to buy extra VPN software), you can even log into your VPN using this phone, it also has POP and SMTP mail access, Calendar function is great and I use it greatly, Hotsynching is amazingly easy to do, you can install Palm applications over the air, included web browser is a full featured web browser and you can view just about any website. I also have an additional proxy based browser called Reqwireless WebViewer (a java based AMAZINGLY FAST browser, costs $20 one time, worth every penny).
This phone is amazing if you are a true computer user. I use it sometimes with VNC to access my Windows XP desktop!
There is so much you can do with this phone. There is tons of palm OS freeware and paid software. If you need answers to anything regarding this phone, check out Treocentral Discussion Forum. Great site with tons of useful info, people reviews, experiences and software links.

uberphone
How about the Treo600? It's a computer, PDA, color display, stereo MP3 player, 4band phone, 56Kbps+ Net terminal, game player, and more. Its SDIO slot can take "cartridges" for better games, including coprocessors for video. It's even got an uberdevice price: at MSRP $500, it costs less than the sum of its parts, but more than many desktop computers.

Treo 300 user here and..
.. I'm going to upgrade as soon as they have a belt clip sort of case. I really hate the current leather type of cases they are offering.
Even though it looks geeky, unless I have a good case that isn't that obtrusive, I'll wind up leaving it in my car/home/desk and not on my hip where I need it to be.
For all your treo needs, remember to go to treocentral.com. Their msg boards are awesome.

Re:Where do you put it?
Take a look at this page from a Treocentral review of the 600. You'll notice that it is only slightly longer than the 300 and no wider or thicker. So if you could jam a Treo 300, or any Palm handheld for that matter, in your pocket without your bulge drawing unwanted attention you should be OK with the new Treo.
I would recommend going to a CompUSA or Best Buy and seeing how it fit in your pocket, but with those overly-sensitive alarm cables you could really draw attention to yourself. -
TreoCentral.com is a good resource too
TreoCentral.com also has an excellent preview.revview of the Treo 600 here. TreoCentral claims to be the #1 community website for the Handspring Treo - they have reviews, news, a store and more.
The thing that makes TreoCentral great though is their very active discussion board. -

Re:Flimsy Case
Many people have also voiced a strong concern about the absence of a flip lid for protecting the main screen as well as concern for the camera lens getting scratched. Handspring has conducted extensive durability tests to ensure the new Treo 600 can stand up to everyday use. Apparently despite Handsprings best efforts to scratch the screens in their real life testing they could not. Same with the camera lens.
One of the ways Handspring tested the durability of the screens was to put the Treo in a purse with all kinds of real life things like sharp keys and sunglasses and shake up the purse for long periods of time. It bummed me out to learn this, but they sacrificed two hundred Treo 600s just testing them for sturdiness and durability which included drop testing?on concrete floors!
I am not really an SMS kind of dude, but I understand SMS messaging is really hot in England and Japan. The 600 has this really cool UI feature that groups together all responses in a single window on the top level and then follows it like this threaded forum. Really Keeewl.
Article from here. -
Re:bluetooth?
The reason that the Bluetooth functionality is not there is not because they couldn't get it in (especially since one article mentioned a blank space on the circuitboard that is apprently reserved for bluetooth) but more because reportedly Jeff Hawkins is suspicious of incorporating 'unproven' technology - instead, he'd rather optimise current technology.
Having said that, I still wish they'd chuck one in. ;)
Maybe in P4lm0ne Treo 605...
(And pre-emptively, I'd like to mention (although several people probably would have posted about this by the time I finish composing this) that I would prefer the 160x160 screen if the screen was going to be so small, because otherwise the text would be molecular. However, caveat emptor, as some OS5 apps may expect a 320x320 screen and thus the Treo may run into some problems there.) -
