Re:"migrating German code comments to English"
Don't call my canine a dog. She's a bitch.
That is specifically a word for female dogs-- not all dogs.
Take the following with a grain of salt.
A ship is referred to using feminine pronouns.
That is not the same thing as grammatical gender.
Look up ship in English; note how there is no indication of its gender, nor is there any difference in usage.
Now look it up in German; note how it indicates "neuter" next to schiff, and it indicates that for neuter nouns, you use "das Schiff" as opposed to "der Schiff".It also has nothing to do AFAIK with wither you use he or she vs it-- lets look at "teacher". It has no gender in english, and you would generally say "he" or "she" depending on whether the teacher in question was male or female. In german, "der Lehrer" is masculine, but once again, you would use "er" (he) or "sie" (she) depending on the gender of the teacher.
I am fairly certain we have no grammatical gender as I cannot name a single masculine noun, or their corresponding articles (eg, "[das / der / die] Noun").
You are right that many places teach foreign language but at least where I went to school that was always an elective, and my point was more that "gendered" words arent a native english concept.

Re:No speed improvement for those on x86_64???
Well I am using Firefox 3.5 on a Linux box with dual 64 bit cores (AMD4200+), and 3.5 is more than twice the speed of 3.0.0.11 when rendering the URL ftp://fedora.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora/linux/development/x86_64/os/Packages - Firefox 3 took about 77 seconds.
So if it is not using a JIT, then I'm even more impressed! -
Re:oh really?
Actually..
I have seen a detailed analysis at 22C3 of the Cell and it's impressive. Really, by any means. But the maximum gains will be achieved only after a few years/months after the PS3 is out and not in graphics but in AI, physics simulation. Also it looked very well if you're a blade server user, but you'll have to tweak your apps. It's a multicore and does not care about backward compatibility.
The slides of the presentation can be downloaded from http://gustav.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~htor/sec/ 22c3_slides.pdf
Bottom line is that when the Emotion Engine (PS2 core processor) came out the claims where not substantiated by facts and Sony fudged its way through making hilarious claims (which no one in the mainstream press ridiculed at the time).
PS. There is a patent filed from Sony a few years back that basically says that Cell processor can communicate with each other and share their computing power, like in a room your PS3 can use your PC/PDA/Oven spare cycles to help you frag in better quality. Was hyped by Sony when they annouced the PS3 but havent seen anything in the PS3 at the moment.
But who cares in the end? The only thing that I'm excited about is the Revolution controller!

FUD?
until 4.0, gcc's backend was entirely and deliberately undocumented
My first thought was, gee, that's not been my experience--as I recall, although it was complicated, it was rather well documented. So I did a bit of Google and found that other people seemed to agree with me (i.e., they say things like "Furthermore, compared to the other compiler projects, GCC offered the most comprehensive documentation for backend porters." and so forth). The only thing I could find that even sort of suport your claim was RMS's thing about not wanting the backend to drift into becoming an LGPL black-box (thus chilling the development of new GPL'd front ends).
So, do you care to back your claim up?

Some have the wrong ideaThis is not meant to replace a score editor!!!
Analogous to the world of word processing, this software is more in the category of software like TeX, LaTeX, or even Postscript and PDF, to a lesser extent. This is software made for pretty printing music. It is meant to do this job, and this job alone very, very well. While one could edit it directly (it's not that difficult to work with), that would be something like using a flathead screwdriver on a screw that is clearly a Philips.
What people should do is look for a score editor that can export LilyPond documents. I'll help start you off:
I'm sure there are others out there. ikx -

I haven't looked at it for a while, I provided a few suggestions a while back. I thought it was a good idea. For non-authorised subnets, it sends bogus ARP replies, with bogus MAC addresses.

NoteEdit
NoteEdit is also decent for sheet music to Lilypond if that's what you're looking for.
Unfortunately the project is half-dead due to percieved disinterest. Doesn't make it less functional though. -

Contrib Packages for 3.2
Since nobody has (yet) taken the pains of posting the mirror list (yea, yea, I know, this is
/.) -- here it is:Hmm
.. I wonder if the /. lameness filter was designed so that people couldn't post whole mirror lists themselves. Telling me that I don't have enough characters per line. I think I'll just ask the KDE people to create a static fast-serving no-css page full of mirrors for KDE whenever a release happens. That way, at least some amount of trouble would be saved. Goes off to mail KDE team ...(pulled from KDE Mirror List)

Engraving with LilyPondBased on what I see from Lilypond's introduction, it isn't capable of producing print music that doesn't conform to that definition of "music" we're so used to. For example, music without a key or time signature,
Here is some gregorian chant, or polymetric stuff.
nonstandard key signatures,
See this example
cutout scores, feathered beaming, ossia measures, etc.
These are not supported, although feathered beaming would not be difficult to implement. However, I have played in a ensemble that plays 20th and 21st century music exclusively for the past five years, and I have rarely seen the contraptions that you mention in modern music; most of it is notated with traditional notation, with a lot of time-sig changes. In fact, publishers nowadays will not engrave such funky scores, but have them written by hand, or they will reproduce the manuscript (Unless you happen to be called Xenakis or Berio.)
I had a copy job that I originally tried to do in Lilypond via the text interface and copying one part from the score took almot nine hours of typing, rendering it, fixing it, and re-rendering it to ensure that it came out right.
YMMV; I have recently produced parts & score (4 pages for the 2nd part). It took me approximately 30 minutes. Granted, it was a straightforward piece, but the speed depends much on how well-versed you are with the software. Finally, LilyPond has progressed very much in usability over the last year. If the last time you tried it was more than a year ago, you might want to give it another go.
Lilypond would need to have a nicer MIDI-compatible interface thrown on top of it to compete.
Have you seen RoseGarden and NoteEdit.

Re:This is a troll! You're right. It was a WarCraft clone. When I looked at it originally, there were map graphics stolen directly from StarCraft. It would appear this has changed. (They are now stolen from WarCraft.)
Anyway, check out this screenshot. Compare with this one. First shot is FreeCraft. (Dead giveaways are the red blobby thing from the catapult and StarCraft style health bars.) Second shot is of WarCraft II. Look slightly similar? (Especially the building in the lower left corner?)
So, yeah, I got the details wrong (I still think the copy I downloaded was early enough to be using a Marine artwork in place of a Footsoldier artwork). But they do indeed steal - directly - the graphics set from WarCraft II and are basically trying to "recreate" that game. They should have expected what they got.

Re:drop AltiVecI do science and I have benefitted from optimized BLAS libraries (on x86 chips as it happens) both when using a program for semidefinite programming and running Octave scripts. A colleague of mine gave a talk just yesterday, mentioning how easy it had been setting something up using Perl and PDL, which apparently is built ontop of BLAS. I think the GSL is also using BLAS if it is available.
You simply do not necessarily need to work directly with BLAS (and LAPACK for that matter) to enjoy the fruits of excellent optimization!

AFS vs NFSIt takes more time to set up an AFS cell than a NFS server, but the rewards are pretty tremendous IMO.
It's become such a part of my day to day life that I can't really describe the things I was missing before. The best things about it are probably the strong, flexible security and ease of administration. It also gives you everything you need from a small shop all the way up to a globally available decentralized data store.
There seems to be a good comparison here. I would strongly recommend AFS for all of your distributed filesystem needs. (The OpenAFS developers are cool too!)

Try noteedit
As has been pointed out, Rosegarden is a sequencer, not notation software - there's an overlap but sequencers tend not to be very good at being notation software - the focus of the software is different. Having toyed with Rosegarden-4... let's just say its notation is basic, although it's shaping up to be a good sequencer.
I like noteedit myself, it's proper notation software and seems to be the nearest thing Linux has to Finale or Sibelius. It does a nice job, exports to Lilypond, MusiXTeX and a couple of other formats for printed output, and even supports guitar tabs (very useful, and something that you have to pay even more for in Finale). Mind, I don't have very complicated requirements for notation software, all I do is typeset my band's songs for posterity.
BTW let's keep the toolkit jibes out of it, shall we? It's appropriate in a story about X toolkits, but this isn't one, here it looks like partisan flamebait. Besides, if you use Bluecurve or Keramik/Geramik, they look very nearly the same anyway, so no problem, right?

Re:Top 500 Supercomputers can be found...Now, I usually don't nitpick, BUT I am just to proud for this: you missed number 126.
528 Pentium III-800 computer, running Red-Hat Linux. (well, usually it is some less, since a couple are out of order at any time). Just normal mini-towers in long rows of shelves. And a huge network switch. Normally, the info can be found here, but since Murphy lives, it seems like our webserver is down right now, another picture.
Well, back to abusing this machine.

Some suggestions
The author of this article(in german) compared some of the available tools with the Windows program "Reference Manager". His conclusion: There are no absolutely recommendable programs, but Sixpack, Pybliographer (and XEmacs in the bibtex mode) are strong candidates.

Obligatory LinksHere are some of my favorite classic gaming resources on the web:

Ü NOT U!
argh.. if you want to borrow some expression from Nietzsche then use the correct spelling
:
Übervirus - from german über mostly meaning above. (see this Dictionary entry for about 190 different meanings =)
And if you have no 'Ü'-Key on your Keyboard - hey.. that's HTML here.. the correct character is just an Ü away. -
Re:SuSE and Games
YaST II is for the graphical installation only, so far. The regular system tool is still the old YaST - but with quite a few more options (like you ca configure LVM (logical volume manager), or a more powerful sendmail setup,...).

Re:Keeping SuSe under controlIt still does has the annoying reading through rc.config twice during every single rc script though.
What the h... are you talking about?! Not a single SysV rc-file does anything special with rc.config, all they do is to "source" it, so that variables set in rc.config can be checked within the rc-files. That's regular shell stuff and no magic. Get yourself a beginners guide to shells!
Besides, it only sources rc.config ONCE, not twice. And setting a shell variable START_[some-daemon]="Yes|No" in rc.config is a lot easier than removing and inserting links in the runlevel directories. With the SuSE method those links are always there, with the correct names, meaning the correct numbers, i.e. the correct sequence of startup and shutdown. Of course, if you think a "real (Marlboro?) man" is one who keeps track of all these links in all the various runlevel directories, so be it.

Re:SuSE 6.1 had old GNOME, Enlightenment RPMs
(see bottom for answer to question)
Gnome is now MUCH better supported than in 6.2. FInally, you can make Gnome your default in yast, and also select it in xdm/kdm when you login (if it's installed) when you login. Also, the program menu in EE shows all installed apps, I don't think that worked back in 6.2. It looks very good. Looks like I'll finally try out Gnome, I used only KDE so far.
Another thing I found is LVM ("logical volume manager"), which can even be configured from within yast. I'll _have_ to try it...
That's the names of the rpm's on CD2 starting with gn* on SuSE Linux 6.3:

Re:SuSE IPO ?
SuSE AG is a holding. It contains several sub-companies (as "GmbH"s), one of the SuSE Press, another one is SuSE Inc. (SuSE Oakland, California), and so on. Shares of a company that is based on stock don't have to be traded publically. You can found your own "AG" and own 100% of the stock. Only some "AG"s are traded publically. Should be the same in the US.

Re:Good And Bad
We (my emails: mha@suse.de and mhasenst@us.oracle.com [I'm at Oracle in Redwood City, for SuSE]) will NOT forget other platforms. We've had an AXP version of the distribution, and we might have other platforms as well. We can't do Compaqs work, however. If they don't promote the Alpha (enough)... same with PPC -- (offtopic) FYI: Oracle on SuSE (my business): - SuSE Linux 6.2 certified on Oracle 8i, and SuSE Linux 6.3 is 98% through the process) - SuSE _first_ distributor with en engineer (me) at Oracle HQ - also see http://www.suse.de/~mha/oracle/

Linux Network Address Translation is a really good explanation of what's available for Linux and how NAT works in general. (Or, at least, links to those things.)
I think the package offered at Linux IP NAT Forum is the one I tried to use. There's nothing wrong with it, but Linux's arp is inherently broken to my eye and it had become too great an irritation to make Linux do what I knew I could do in an hour in...
OpenBSD, using ipf and ipnat (the real and original way to do this, also available on Solaris, I believe). -
About the "NAT is evil" articlesNAT is the virtualization of network addresses. Weve had the same development with memory addresses long ago, and similar issues (i.e. programs using physical (memory) addresses directly). Today we have almost the same development weve seen inside a computer in a larger environment, the network. The time where an address specified an exact physical entity will be over some day, and is already today in many cases - ever heard of virtual servers? Load balancing?
The network is still at an very early stage in development compared to the inside of any modern computer. Youll see even more virtualization. That doesnt mean todays NAT solutions are the future, theyre just the beginning and at an early, sometimes very experimental, stage, just like virtual memory wasnt developed overnight. Besides, the virtual network is a lot harder to do than virtual memory: the latter takes place inside one small box, while the virtualization of network resources has consequences for millions of computers simultaenously.

Re:Where do I get it?
There is no license agreement for the CD. Of course not, this is all free stuff except for the pay-series with commercial stuff - where SuSE goes so far to separate free vs. non-free that even xv is in 'pay'. What you probably mean is the YAST license. But you don't say so, that means your deliberately spreading SuSE-FUD.
