    Just tried it (as he said later, remove the pdf in the link, and download 3dfm, configure, make, make install). It is quite nice done, pretty fast and a nice overview. It looks like most of the features already are done, and there is also preferences ... Since it compiled that easy, I will propose it to Gentoo.

    you might also want to check out Helwig Hauser's M.S. thesis from back in 1996. He did about the same thing, just a little prior. Too bad that Mr. Glassner was a bit sloppy with his research and didn't even mention the (published) results from that MS thesis in his own TR.

    aside from read performance, you use RAID 1 for high availability (reduce MTBF, eliminate MTTR from the equation). but already, RAID 5 gives you more h.a.

    In addition, it seems like disks are no longer the weakest link in the MTBF chain - assuming redundant PSUs, your main concern is really your CPU/RAM/bus/chipset. To improve this situation, you need n+1 redundancy, and that in most cases means a specialized piece of hardware (h.a. NAS) or a SAN that can be failed over.

    If you like that minty-fresh open source, off-the-shelf hw feeling, check out drbd or help out Hr. Reisner. drbd is a linux module that provides for a mirrored block device. If it succeeds as a project, it would be a great way to provide n+1 cheaply.

    In fact wasn't one of the registers in the SID chip of the C-64/128 based on this very idea (I'm not sure about the VIC though). Something about one of the voice registers getting its input from line noise. Anybody remember the details on this one?

    Probably not. There is a MNG add-on for Seamonkey/Firebird; however, I could not get it to work with a recent nightly build of Firebird (20030720). Maybe you'll have better luck than I.

    You might want to try NuppelVideo. It produces rather big files but works like a charm. I use cheap bttv-based cards too and with NuppelVideo i have no frame-drops and video and audio are in perfect sync.

    The .nuv-Files as output can then be converted to whatever you want using Mplayer .

    The custom synth chip made for the C64 is in short supply, in fact from what I understand there arent any bulk ones left. It's the basis of some pretty neat modern synth projects including the SidStation, and the amazing DIY project The MIDIbox Sid. You might wanna check out this interview with Bob Yannes the designer of the SID chip.

    Read the details at bugzilla.m.o bug 195280. It was around June 3 I think. Several people have linked to an XPI that you can install to restore MNG support to post-June-3 builds. Try http://stud4.tuwien.ac.at/~e0225227/.

    There is a much older bug to restore MNG support but if you feel the urge to comment in bugzilla be sure to read the rules and add something useful...

    About the same time The Matrix (the first one) hit the big screen, there was these two other movies that roughly addressed the reality issue: these movies were Existenz from David Cronenberg and The Thirteenth Floor from Josef Rusnak. It is interesting how these three movies looked at the nature of reality.

    What The Matrix did that was missing from the other two movies were the spectacular and highly innovative special effects, of course, but beyong this, I would like to add what others above in this discusison thread are dismissing, the phylosophical question about reality.

    This subject is far from new. Platon in his famous Allegory of the Cave were already exploring it.

    Modern physics is seriously redefining the nature of reality itself with the introduction of probability in Quantum Mechanics (you should read John Gribbin's In Search of Schrodinger's Cat: Quantum Physics and Reality ).

    What the Wachowski brothers did in The Matrix were to re-circulate some of the ideas floating around from ages in a modern action-packed and innovative sci-fi context. And I guess this is why this movie were so popular. The second incarnation of the matrix movie (The Matrix Reloaded) were addressing another issue. The central question were more the meaning of (our individual) existence than the nature of reality. I suspect that the Wachowski brothers will merge these two issues into the same story in Revolutions.

    Yes, drbd. RAID style redundancy is not an alternative to good backups though.

    Ffdshow is an easy replacement, as it's based on a Linux project, ffmpeg.

    The extent of my encoding comes from recording TV or VHS tapes and throwing a few filters at them for cleanup and encoding. So I've never had a chance to become familiar with what features avisynth has. Some people over at Doom9's Linux forum have mentioned getting Avisynth running in wine.

    Tmpgenc should be a pretty easy replacement. Transcode seems to be a favorite for mpeg2 encoding. There was a problem when I first started using Linux, which slowed mpeg encoding to a snails pace for a while, and I've never found a chance to get back to see how it works when fully functional. A lot of peoplel swear by it though, and it's feature list is pretty impressive. Avidemux, as well as quite a few other programs also provide mpeg1 encoding, I think through ffmpeg.

    Everything in VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod except video capture should work fine under wine and that's what I used for quite a while before Avidemux appeared. The design and functionality are very similar to virtualdub, and it also includes encoding to mpeg1.

    One of the two best media players for Linux, Mplayer, should be noted to have better support for matroska, in cvs, than is available for the format under windows. And these tools can be used for creation and editing of matroska files.

    For capture from a tv card, I use nuppelvideo, and then use avidemux to edit and convert to a smaller format.

    Most of the suggestions here require ~$500 DVD burners, expensive capture hardware or locating ancient uber-vhs decks which probably aren't that easy to find service for.

    I suggest an mid range used PC ~500mhz, coupled with a cd-burner and a $90 CDN TV Tuner card. I use the ATI TV Wonder PCI, which can be found for much less on Ebay... either way nearly every Tuner card i've come across is supported by BTTV, although I've had small luck with Gatos which is designed for ATI All-In-Wonder cards.

    So for software, we're looking at:
    Linux (i use Debian with 2.4.18)
    Compile BTTV and TV Tuner support in your kernel or modules if needed
    Nuppelvideo - great *ZERO* frame dropping capture software which will result in huge, quality, 640x480, raw, stereo clips.
    Transcode which will convert your Nuppelvideo files into any format you choose, I prefer DivX 5, which squashes your clips down to size suitable for 700mb discs. No DVD needed.

    If you're still wondering why we're using a TV tuner card, it's that fact that almost all of them have S-Video/Composite/Stero inputs, so you can capture from most sources... incl. VHS, Beta, whatever.

    The quality is great IMHO, for the small amount of $$ and the ease of transfer once you have a handle on the software. There are load of resources out there, much of the DVD ripping FAQs mirror all the audio/video sync/editing info you'll need to master this process.

    To top it all off, if you use an avi file format, like DivX uses, you can use VirtualDub, free software that allows you to chop up clips, join them and fix repair/mix audio features on your clips. Just make sure you choose Direct Stream Copy so the clips are "spliced" (very quick) and not processed (hours zzzzzzzz).

    All of this with free software, a few bucks, your old computer... does it get any better?

    Thanks for mentioning QCL! After all, QCL has already been around for 3 years as the first version of the above article appeared in March 2001 and the QC-lib (libqc), a C++ library comparable to the QRAM lib, which now serves as the simulation back-end of the QCL interpreter dates back to 1996.

    And don't let netcraft fool you. They don't have their OS-detection-logic up to date. Neighter has nmap.

    And if you can't reach it, that's a feature (TM) since it's stability is worse than Win 3.0 with DR-Dos 7 underneath it.

    I have your card, the ATI TV Wonder. It captures crisp, stereo clips at 640x480 at a full 30fps, no frame drops.

    Have a look into BTTV (a driver) XawTV (a player) and a variety of recording software, I prefer Nuppelvideo which can be converted to virtually any format (including DivX 5) using transcode.

    The bttv stuff is included in the kernel source all the rest is only a brief compile or an apt-get xxxxx.
    It takes a little while to get everything running, but once you do, it runs completely stable and uses very little resources. Say goodbye to that awful ATI capture software.
    The finale being that all these clips can be edited using Cinelerra 1.0.

    Time to start archiving Trek, SNL and The Osbournes?

    You might want to look at NuppelVideo. I've used it to create mpegs froma tv-tuner card, which I subsequently burned to VCD. I've been very happy with the results. The tarball includes documentation and scripts to convert the recorded files to mpeg using lame, mpeg2enc, and mplex.

    Also, the Linux VCR HOWTO may have some useful information for you.

    Sure you can with a anemic little computer (Pentium MMX 266) and a crappy ol' bttv tuner card.

    Go and download Nupple-video and follow his tips on there to heppily converth the Nupplevideo output to mpeg2 files then buy yourself a nice Hollywood+ mpeg playback card. Now add crontab, mplayer, and spice it with the at daemon to make it easier, bake at 350 with your favorite Linux distro (I choose Slackware 8.0 for it's low fat high quality ingredients) and you have a basic PVR that will gladly play it's video onto your Television without any silly content viewing protection, statistic collection and selling, or government spyware... that eye on the Tivo... I know it's watching me!

    it's nothing like a tivo, no FF rewind, pause, or all theo other fluff, but you can make a nice web control panel , point, click, watch Invader Zim!

    no it's not easy, no it wont be pretty, no it's not DVD quality with 6.1 surround.. but who cares. it's free, open, and cooler than a Tivo.

    I thought the (whole) sentence was clear, but in case it's not, let me repeat that I have no objection to leveraging MS R&D, or other good work done elsewhere, e.g. Anton Ertl's research, but there is absolutely no benefit in slavishly emulating the whole platform. (The 'portability' argument is completely specious, as has been pointed out numerous times elsewhere).

    In fact, there are good reasons for not copying everything, such as the efficient provision of reflection and meta-level capabilities.
