Re: Internet without evangelicals = Win
It was more than a little sad; it was wrong. Eich probably would have donated anonymously, but California didn't allow him to do so. Some assholes looked up his name on a government-published list and then just persecuted him for no reason other than they disagreed with his political views.
Those assholes are still gleefully twisting the knife. See here: https://twitter.com/hcatlin/st...
If SJW is ever an accurate way to describe a group of people, it is an accurate way to describe the vindictive assholes who went after Brendan Eich.

Re:Still single-threaded, right?
Believe it or not, they've been trying to implement multi-process Firefox (electrolysis or e10s), but lack of funding and proper direction from management means they haven't been on top of this for a few years.
Sadly the homo community forced Brenden Eich* out, otherwise he was a clear leader and wanted to put e10s as the top-most priority.
Anyway, after something like 8 years now, they're finally almost reaching a point of releasing a (limited) multi-process firefox, but it's been held back primarily due to not only the complexity of the code-base, but management and direction, and mainly due to addons, of which you can check the status here: http://arewee10syet.com/
* Eich is the inventor of javascript, and Mozilla is lucky to still have such a great person working for them since the earliest days of Netscape! He's also the one championing EMCAScript versions.

So in the space of a few hours you have gone for vague speculation that one particular comment she allowed might possibly have got her fired, to it being a hard fact that can be used to make your argument.
She was shut down in the middle of the AMA - In the middle of a fucking sentence, FCOL - see here. I kinda doubt it had anything to do with her job performance.
Kinda like how all the "facts" GamerGate was based on were actually just innuendo and outright lies, but somehow became fact in the minds of it supporters.
GG wanted ethics in gaming - when they got it they shut up. That's about all that's needed to show that they didn't give a flying tootsie roll about women in gaming.

Voat is broke
I may be posting this to late to get any visibility, but I have to try.
Voat is out of money. They took donations via Paypal until their account was suspended for unspecified reasons. They also suffered two massive DDOS attacks and has to pay out the wazoo to get on Cloudflair. Opponents of free speech play dirty.
Voat does not have ANY INCOME and servers can get expensive. The only way they can stay up is if a lot of people give them bitcoin. Their wallet is:

Some facts about Tim Hunt's comments via KOFWST.
For those of you who doubt the veracity of Connie St. Louis' claims, they are backed up by credible witnesses (Deborah Blum and Ivan Oransky), including members of the Korean Federation of Women's Science and Technology Association. KOFWST released an open letter demanding an apology from Tim Hunt:
"At a luncheon hosted by the Korea Federation of Women’s Science and Technology Associations (KOFWST) during the World Conference of Science Journalists in Seoul on June 8, 2015, Nobel Laureate Sir Tim Hunt made some inappropriate remarks over which KOFWST would like to express its very strong regrets.
... This unfortunate incident must not be portrayed as a private story told as a joke. We cannot accept sexist remarks that threaten to reverse the gains made towards equality for women scientists, and women in the wider society." (Press Release)Furthermore, Tim Hunt's career isn't over because he lost his "honorary appointment" at UCL. For this of you who don't know, an honorary appointment is NOT a real job. It's a title without pay. In other words, it's not a real job. And the UCL Provost has reaffirmed the position that Tim Hunt's comments (UCL Provost Statement)
So Tim Hunt got called out on really stupid remarks and non-apology (“I did mean the part about having trouble with girls.”). He lost a title and his desk at UCL. Sounds about right. What's the lesson to be drawn here? It's time to get over your sexist attitudes about women in science. If that's lost on you, then, at the very least, keep your sexist comments to yourself.

Re:Welcome to Fascist America!
... Even a very basic knowledge of statistics (as I explained to you a long time ago) argues against you. And you didn't show I was wrong about that, you just refuted a couple of hypothetical examples I pulled out of thin air. You've hardly rigorously addressed the issue.
...Again, I've already explained why your accusation of arguing against "very basic knowledge of statistics" is wrong: treating creationism as a scientific hypothesis would destroy science. Anyone who vaguely appeals to "basic statistics" to justify treating creationism as a scientific hypothesis which can have some evidence obviously hasn't rigorously addressed the issue of how to falsify a supernatural hypothesis.
This is such a gross misrepresentation of anything I actually said I'll count it as a lie in its entirety. First, I didn't at any time say I was talking about statistics actually involving "young earthers" per se. I was simply speaking of statistics, as a field, in a completely general sense. The science of statistics. Which has NOTHING to do specifically with young-earthers.
...How incredibly bizarre. After Jane claimed that "a very basic knowledge of statistics (as I explained to you a long time ago) argues against you," I explained that Jane's "completely general" argument doesn't apply to creationism, because creationism is a supernatural "hypothesis" and therefore can't be supported by some evidence. Ironically, Jane simply accused me of lying and then just blissfully keeps repeating the same nonsense as though he hadn't read a single word I wrote:
... They just happened to be topic under discussion, but my comment was about the nature of evidence, not about young-earthers.It's a fact of life that if you hunt long and hard enough, you can find evidence for just about anything. It may not be very good evidence, and it may be shown to be false later, but evidence nevertheless. And simple statistics suggests this is also true of the young-earthers, as it is of just about anything else. This guy has flatly disputed this nearly-invariate fact of life. They may not have any good evidence. But the notion that they have found some kind of evidence -- not proof mind you, but evidence, no matter how thin or tiny -- is strongly supported by a smidgen of statistical thinking. He flatly denies the idea that they could have any evidence at all, even though I've explained to him repeatedly that he appears to be conflating evidence with proof. Or even possibly just degrees of evidence.
...Again, that can be true for actual competing scientific hypotheses. They could be described as each having some evidence, but creationism doesn't even qualify as a scientific hypothesis. It's simply not possible for creationists to have any evidence, because creationism isn't testable science.
... So for him to imply, as he does above, that I my comment in any way "treats creationism as a scientific hypothesis", is just crazy. Plain and simple. There is zero truth to it.
...Saying that "young-earth creationists have some evidence" is treating creationism as a scientific hypothesis which can have some evidence. In fact, Jane just repeated that claim ad nauseum above.
Again, I've explained that considering the possibility that creationism can have

The "one year" thing is to push people into upgrading sooner rather than later. If you upgrade within the first year, Windows 10 is free for the life of the device (and that includes reinstalls; so long as you have a Microsoft account and your Windows user is connected to that account, you can reinstall on that device to your heart's content.
If you delay in upgrading past that one year mark, you need to go buy a copy.
Hopefully they release SP1 within that first year.

Re:Why would the festival cooperate?
(For context, I just got back from Download today, and this is specifically regarding your objections to police being there.)
I don't think concerts of one or two acts (or even a day's worth of music) is an apt comparison to a multi-day music festival. I believe I've seen there were about 85,000 people at Download, which isn't the busiest it's been. A significant number of these people are camping, some for 5 nights (I was only there for 3), and there's people up at all hours. By and large the people who attend seem to be decent people, and I've never seen any real trouble at the festival myself, but thieves are present and people may get drunk and aggressive, and so it makes sense to have the police there for people to go to if needed. In my experience, the police who attend Download don't give a shit if you're drunk (other than to help you if needed), and I doubt they particularly care much about anything else you're doing unless it's harming other people. It's a rock/metal festival, they know people are going to enjoy themselves in some peculiar ways, and they know it's not their job to stop that. (It is instead apparently their job to pose for pictures.)
(Incidentally, the RFID-based payment system they mandated this year was quite nice for not having to have any money on site, although the privacy concerns are there).

Re:Offshoring
However the reasons where clearly due to Space X's failure to get their act together and provide confidence that they will be human rated in time to take over when the contract with the Russians was set to end. So NASA really doesn't have much choice, because if Space X isn't ready when the current seats we have from the Russians end, we'd be in a place where no US crew replacements would be possible.
Source for that? Really I think you are making it up. Space X just finished their launch abort test for their capsule. They are likely going to be ready on time. They have been delivering Dragon 1 capsule to the station for a while now. What this really sounds like is a full court press by incumbent aerospace companies to derail SpaceX before they can demonstrate successful launches of humans to space. The committees in Congress and the Senate that underfunded the commercial space program were largely in the pockets of Boeing, Lockheed Martin, or other existing space companies. Here is a tweet from Charles Lurio, who is a fairly reliable source of space information:
Understand that Boeing pushing HARD to reduce Commercial Crew funds to force NASA to 'downselect' to one provider - them.
There are a lot of established companies who want to kill Musk's businesses. These competitors have sunk costs, and Musk is threatening their monopolies by doing what they do cheaper and better. Examples: Boeing, Lockheed Martin, ULA are used to getting fat "cost plus" contracts for government launches. Space X looks like it will stop that. Tesla will be coming out with a $35000 electric car, that will likely sell very well. Energy companies don't what this to happen. Musk's enemies are competing using political subterfuge, bribery, and stealth "public relations" campaigns, rather than improving their business and manufacturing processes. Really all of this stinks like the worst forms of crony capitalism. America is showing its corrupt side. And so called "free enterprise" republicans are behind much of it.

Article is Disingenuous, Author is Biased
You can read the whole article (and you should), but here are some nice excerpts.
FTA: On the electric car front, the Chevy Volt is the most significant U.S. competitor to Musk's Tesla Model S...
Meanwhile, Volt was developed during Uncle Sam's bailout of "Government Motors" with $30 billion. That's more than six times the number that got Mr. Hirsch so worked up! Though GM touts that they've "repaid" the government, Treasury reports that the government lost more than $11 billion on that dubious deal.
The Model S is not comparable to the Volt. The Volt is a plug-in hybrid (not an EV) cludge to meet the requirements of a bail out. The Nissan Leaf is a better comparison and it blows the Model S out of the water in its effects on the market. But, the author wants to hamstring a stronger comparison by requiring that the company be American.
Additionally, a bail out deal and subsidy are not comparable. A bail out deal your mom throwing you a few hundred bucks because your business failed, rent needs to be paid, and you have to go visit her to pick up the check. A subsidy is your mom throwing you a few hundred bucks to start up or expand your business. One's there to save your as with some nominal requirements and the other is there to help you profit. Musk has taken both for Tesla.
FTA: The most polite response I can offer to the critics is: Get over it. Find something more productive to do than condemning success. If you insist on continuing to carp, do your research first and hit the right targets. Otherwise you will continue to sound jealous and misinformed.
Wow, internet tough guy, huh?

Re:No media center? Windows 10 is DEAD to me...
I really don't get their stance on WMC. I have two media PCs running Win7 essentially only for WMC (more specifically the Live TV + free scheduling it has, vs Kodi/XBMC). Lacking WMC there is really no reason I wouldn't run Linux and kick them out. If they are trying to increase their presence on HTPCs in the living room it makes no sense. I would consider Roku and such but I need web browser capability.
There was some bizarre comment about people only using it for DVD playback. I don't know where they got that feedback from. I know several people who have WMC setups only for it's added Live TV PVR capability.

I want my old /. With BlackJack and Hookers.
Eh, forget the
./Dice you've successfully figured out how to run one of the most best 'news' and opensource websites and run them into the ground for profit.
/. and Fark were the only 2 places that could handle 9/11 traffic. I rode out that entire day on both sites when CNN was crumbling.I'm glad I had Slashdot over Reddit when I was an angsty tenager. I took pride in trying to get +5 comments and put effort into doing so. Honestly slashdot made me a better writer. Reddit is nice for short terse communication but sometimes I want to "talk with adults".
Slashdot didn't need much. Unicode support. Newer HTML5 support. CSS3. Make a decent mobile app, move away from HTML for Markdown. Moderation made sense and was much better than a simple +- system. Voting was randomly enabled and you couldn't both vote and comment on the same article. -2 to 5 also limited band wagoning. It's easier to recover from a bunch of early 'down votes'. Instead you drove everyone away to other sites (which still don't quite scratch the
/. itch). You shoe horn in what ever fucking agenda is "big in IT". Looking back at all the news I got from /. I can't ever remember thinking "I wonder if a woman did this" or "Too bad a woman didn't do this" because I didn't care. It was about the tech and news for nerds. On 'Gamergate', 'sexual equality', 'gender issues', we don't care "Trans-gendered" is a big thing in the news these days (and especially around tech) but a long, long time ago I remember a Mac developer made the transition. (This was in the late '90s.) I read her bio. Shrugged my shoulders went "Neat" and moved on. Why? Because she made some awesome Mac games. Most other person I know in IT or engineering think the same way. None of us care what you do with your body or who you take to the bedroom. I do care if you can cut it and get your work done or contribute to society.
On the other side of that is Randi Harper (FreeBSD Girl) who actually write decent code. I've dug through some of her BSD commits, major props to her for doing that. But it can all be done without photoshopping traffic tickets to make it look like you got swatted, begging for money to move on twitter, (When you already earn $3k/month from Patreon), grandstanding on Twitter for no reason and bandwagoning users against anyone that disagrees isn't the way to do it.
You had the same opportunity to fix Sourceforge all of its' convoluted download mirrors (just use a proper CDN), update to Git, and everything else that Sourceforge isn't and GitHub is. Instead you rested on your laurels and are now trying to use this as one last cash grab before the Titanic goes down.
I don't know where I was going with this either. Just thought someone up top should know why your traffic is tanking and a lot of us are pissed off at you for what you've done.
I still won't forget the time you broke the capslock filter, I remember BitTorrent being announced and people thinking it was useless, the iPod's lack of wifi and space compared to a Nomad, et al.
Thanks for the fish?
