Re:Old ArticleThe author shows a complete misunderstanding of how businesses maintain corporate identity and branding when he launches into such brilliant ideas as suggesting Donkey Konga would have been better served with brand new characters instead of recycling Donkey Kong. Because we all know how the PS2's Taiko Drum Master is burning up the charts (another drum peripheral game, nearly identical to Konga, also developed by Namco) because people are just begging for new drum games featuring all new IP. Come on.
I think the article might have a point about Nintendo overdoing some of it's brands, this post from Game Matters puts it more succinctly than the article.
About brand extension, the dilution is generally a long-term effect and not a short-term one. Releasing, say, a party game as "Mario Party" boosts its sales because of its link to the popular brand, but it dilutes the whole brand in the long term.
Mario, as a brand, has definitely lost strength lately. Each new Mario game used to be a huge release by Nintendo, but now it's much weaker. Super Mario Sunshine is a good example of this since it sold much less than expected. Mario used to be Nintendo's big brand, but now it's Zelda because they diluted it beyond recognition. I used to know what a "Mario game" was, but today it could be anything and that reduces my interest. That's not to say that Mario, as a brand, is worthless -- but it's certainly not what it used to be.
For that matter, Nintendo is doing the same thing with Zelda by putting Link everywhere (Soul Calibur 2, etc.) -- it's another brand that's going to lost strength. I guess they'll continue this trend by creating a Metroid Party or something...

Re:Hacking cellphones
Not quite the same kind of hacking. The USB cable is meant to be used the way you used it. (Very likely you could have found out the same thing by reading the SDK manuals, though it is more fun to discover this stuff on your own.) But Verizon seems to have decided that their customers can't be allowed to use Bluetooth except for specific authorized purposes. Getting around their limitations involves disabling the activation and modifying the firmware. Not for the faint of heart!

But this isn't one of them.
People laughed at me when Bluetooth was first announced. I said I didn't want my cell phone or PDA being frisked by other units as I walked around.
I still refuse to carry any Bluetooth equipment. Who's laughing now?
And, more importantly, how long until a crooked cop uses such a vulnerability to plant evidence on your PDA? -

You may not know this but I, AC, sometimes use my position as an anally retentive little pedant to voice unpopular opinions on slashdot.org. Even if I grant that global warming is occurring, do you have a shred of proof that things like the Kyoto Protocol will result in a net benefit to the welfare of most people? Ever hear of unintended consequences?
Poverty kills, and if there is one thing we can take as near certain based on experience, it is that collectivist prescriptions from the watermelon Left will result in increased poverty and misery.

Dear holy mother of fuck, it's worse than I thought. Depending on which brand of consultant crack you smoke, we live in a world in which Cell phone ringtones are worth between $1B and $3.3B per year.
Compared to listening to your cow orker's annoying cell phone from six cubicles away, hookin' up a set of headphones to the SNES is a welcome relief.

Ever think that it might be MORE COMPLICATED?If you'd actually considered the issue, it might occur to you that the problems faced by Oakland Public Schools might not be solvable within the framework of the current system. To name just one thing, the problem of huge numbers of ESL students requires Federal action to constrain immigration (both legal and illegal).
Some of the problems are of local origin and can't be fixed anywhere else:
- Defective and counterproductive educational philosophy, and
- Bureaucratic empire-building at the expense of the putative purpose of the organization.
For a couple of very informative yet entertaining rants on these subjects, I suggest that you read this regarding the former, and this regarding the latter. Then read the rest of the first site, especially some of the links.

Re:ALL DEMURRALS ASIDE
You're in for a long miserable life if you think that way. "A young conservative has no heart; an old liberal has no brain."
Which is an absolutely false statement.
The plain, simple, undeniable fact is that liberal policies work far better than conservative policies.
Look at the facts. almost all "red" states with the exception of Texas, Colorado, and Nevada are welfare states. That is their economies function solely through the charity of the rest of the country. Specifically, the Liberal states. If you break it down by county, then even within the red states, the republican areas are poorer and the liberal areas are much better off financially.
Now given that conservative policies clearly do not work at all, it doesn't make sense to say that somebody with no brain would vote liberal.
Now, the converse of that statement is pretty clearly true. This is, of course, if you actually argue based on the facts rather that merely repeating ignorant quotes from long ago.
Here is a link showing this. If you don't like that one, there are many more around. Alternatively, you could just look at the figures yourself.
It doesn't really matter though, since you won't find anything to contradict this.
I don't know if evil is the right word, but there is clearly something very seriously wrong with the way these people think for a number of reasons:
First, they claim to be for individual responsibility, small government and against welfare, yet they survive solely through welfare provided by the blue states.
This is either the ultimate hypocricy or an ignorance so severe that it is mind blowing.
They have outdated oppressive social policies which help keep themselves back, yet they voted in this election primarily based on forcing their ignorant ideas on the part of the nation whose mature responsible attitudes are a large part of what allows them to provide the charity upon which their lives are completely dependent.
So it is clear that they lack the most basic common sense since they maintain contradictory ideas (welfare bad--give us welfare) as if they were even rational, let alone good.
They also are trying to drag down the people who are paying their bills.
Once we can no longer afford to pay their bills, who do they think will? That is clearly voting directly against their own best interests, which is evidence of severe flaws in their ability to reason.
Now, when I provide the means for somebody else to survive, I don't expect them to grovel at my feet, but I damn well do expect them not to undermine the very things which allow me to provide them that charity.
So, you might want to update your quote to reflect reality as it does make you look extremely ignorant of the simple basic facts of life.
I, for one, will be doing everything
I can to encourage my representatives to end welfare payments to these states. I think it will be very interesting to see how long they claim to believe what they do when they actually have to live up to it as people with integrity do.
I mean think about it. If we made a requirement that states could not receive more in federal money than they put in, then all of the liberal states would be better off and almost all of the conservative states would be bankrupt.
And they have the audacity to try and tell us how to run an economy or a society. -
Re:What I hateThe reason regulatory taxes on telephony exist is really an enigma to me. I did a google search and came up with the following TechLawyer Blog discussing the FCC's future (well, now curent) decision. An excerpt from the entry:
"one reason for regulation and taxation of common carriers is to assure quality of service and prevent harm to consumers through government action. in the "old days", i was ambivalent about protecting internet information providers from state taxation and regulation because i thought doing so would allow them to be less responsible. i have the same slightly queasy feeling about v.o.i.p. one big reason: v.o.i.p. raises serious security issues not present in p.o.t.s. networks."
Interesting stuff to say the least.

Incorrect Gross Income figuresHello,
http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2004/10/t
e resa_heinz_ke.htmlYour figure for gross income is incorrect - you are using the Adjusted Gross Income figure, which is much less than the value for gross income.
Teresa Heinz Kerry on Friday released a portion of her 2003 federal tax return, reporting that she paid $627k in federal income taxes on $2.3 million of AGI, primarily from dividends and interest.
She received $5.1 million of gross income, $2.8 million of it tax exempt interest income.
Ms. Heinz Kerry, who filed separately from Senator Kerry, thus paid federal income tax at the rate of 12.3% of her gross income and 27.4% of her AGI

Re:Hug thisI know that your type probably doesn't have the capacity to understand any of this, but here's a link just in case.
Here's an excerpt:
The report shows that of the 32 states (and the District of Columbia) that are "winners" -- receiving more in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes -- 76% are Red States that voted for George Bush in 2000. Indeed, 17 of the 20 (85%) states receiving the most federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Red States. Here are the Top 10 states that feed at the federal trough (with Red States highlighted in bold):
To the original poster: if you read this, I know it's a depressing time and you may wish that the South had seceded after all. But don't give up hope - there are still people in America who understand the weight of history and what the phrases "land of the free", and "truth, justice and the american way" really mean. Stand fast, the future is not lost.

Re:Why can't he just return it?When my kid burns her mouth because her pasta was too hot, she gets upset but she's been warned and she knows she should have waited for it to cool, or blow her spoonful to make it colder. She's 6, an age where she now gets replied "you've been warned - make sure it wont happen next time by listening to what we told you"
Good grief, do you understand the difference between an irritated palate and a third-degree burn? [links go to images of 3rd degree burns--not for the faint of heart]
What would you say about a parent who knowingly and without warning served their daughter pasta that was hot enough to give her a third-degree burn in a matter of seconds? Would you call that responsible parenting? Would you call it child abuse?
What would you say about a restaurant that knowingly and without warning served food that was capable of inflicting a third-degree burn in a matter of seconds?
Is this really the same thing as "Ouch, I burned the roof of my mouth!" to you? Is the concept of "degrees of severity" foreign to you?

Not news at all
These machines are already out, although they are not yet common in America (or my part of it). I've seen pics of them blue screen, an example is here http://broken.typepad.com/b/2004/08/atm_running_w
i n.htm Arcade machiens running windows aren't uncommon either, a local arcade had a tempest style game that has been blue-screened every time I have been there. I don't pretend to understand why even a die-hard windows user (and I run Windows at home) would want it in an ATM, but there you have it. Many newer ATM's are moving to high-resolution color screens to display more attractive (and annoying) multimedia interfaces. -
Re:Middle East
I hear stories of Israeli's bombing palestinians and of palestinians bombing Israelis. IMHO the balance is weighted in favour of the palestinians because Israel uses tanks, F-16 and apache helicopters against stone throwing children and believe that is justifiable policing
And right there, you have fallen for the problem with biased media.
You have been led to believe that Palestinians bombing Israelis is similar to Israelis bombing Palestinians. There is however a big difference - The Palestinian (and indeed all Islamic) terror aims to cause as much civilian death as possible. Women, children, the elderly are all fair game.
The same CANNOT be said of Israeli military actions, which whilst potentially resulting in collateral damage do not SPECIFICALLY and STRATEGICALLY aim to kill innocent non-combatants. Israelis don't dance in the streets when a Palestinian child is killed. Can the same be said of Palestinians? No.
Equally, if you believe that Israelis are randomly dropping bombs on poor stone throwing children, you are not aware of how these children are deliberately used as human shields by terrorists holding rifles and rocket launchers (see: here for a textbook example of this disgusting abuse of children by Palestinian terrorists. Now tell me how Israel is supposed to stop the guy shooting at them?
Of course, if the media weren't implicitly biased you'd know all of this wouldn't you?
Still, I'm glad you are debating me. Someone else decided to mod me down as a troll instead. Hardly an intelligent response! -

Re:Press Freedom absolutely necessaryLook at Europe again with its outrageous papers like the Sun or Pravda
For what it's worth, the Sun is American owned (Rupert Murdoch) and Pravda is Russian only. It's hard to specify "European" newspapers, because there are no international European newspapers, only national ones.
What is most disturbing is that in this day and age that there still exists repression of thought in some countries.
Not at all, we in the western world haven't had complete freedom of press and speech for a long time, but if it were up to Bush, this freedom would be taken away again ("There ought to be limits to freedom."):

Freedom of press and speech don't evolve gradually. People have fought and died so we can write the truth and speak our minds. This battle is still continuing in Asia where people are killed for releasing the wrong thoughts or turning against the government. Before freedom finds a home there, a lot of battles will be fought and a lot of people will still suffer. To say the realization of this is eye-opening is naive. It is not to say that the freedom we now have is permanent. Our governments constantly test us to see how far they can go. We still have to fight to keep our freedom. It will never be a given as long as people are led by greed for money and hunger for power.

Re:Three great poll-related sitesRealClear Politics has become the butt of jokes in the press. It's awful. De facto barometer my ass. Here is why RealClear Politics should be utterly, and totally, discounted.
Some more useful sites: Donkey Rising is a pollster-run democratic blog with good analysis. Mystery Pollster does a good job deconstructing polls.

Is this anything like..

EvanKai writes "Jason Schultz writes, "This just in --- Static Control Corp. has won its appeal against Lexmark over the right to produce after-market replacement cartridges for Lexmark printers." You can find a PDF of the ruling here and more about the case on EFF's site." It's important to note that the case is not even close to finished; this was just a ruling on whether Static Control would be enjoined (prevented) from selling their replacement cartridges while the suit proceeded. The original court issued an injunction, and the Appellate Court felt that Static Control had a good chance of success in court and overturned the injunction. The case will proceed and in the end, either side may win. -
