Re:Not the quantum mechanical multiverse
would particles have formed differently, or at all?
Many different outcomes are possible. It's not due to "energy vibrating at different frequencies" - energy does that anyway, every color of visible light you see is energy vibrating at a different frequency, for example. But during an event like the Big Bang, properties of the universe that we observe as constants or laws today could have turned out differently.
Victor Stenger describes it as follows near the end of his 1990 paper The Universe: the ultimate free lunch:
Rather than representing order, symmetry principles actually correspond to a state of high disorder; they describe situations where no particular axis is preferred and thus a system has no structure. Order is not symmetry - order is broken symmetry. It occurs as the result of a phase transition from more symmetric but less orderly states, as with the freezing of a cloud of water vapour into a six-pointed snow-flake. Force laws result from broken symmetry.
Those phase transitions as an early-stage universe cools could lead to different force laws, among other differences, in the resulting universe.

Re:The only solution is workers revolution
The universe is the ultimate free lunch.
Quantum mechanics showed that certain events, such as atomic transitions and nuclear decays, happen spontaneously. Accidents happen (including accidental violations of the first law). Everything that occurs in the Universe is not pre-determined by natural law. In fact, our so-called laws just apply to ensembles of systems, only guaranteeing the statistical behaviour of the ensemble while leaving the behaviour of an individual system to the vagaries of chance.
So, free lunches are statistically likely.

Closest thing I've been able to find thus far is this paper from 2010: Viral vectors for the treatment of alcoholism: Use of metabolic flux analysis for cell cultivation and vector production
The article didn't make too much sense at first, as human acetaldhyde dehydrogenases are located either in the cytosol or mitochondria; vaccine-stimulated antibodies would not be expected to be able to block the enzyme's activity. A gene-therapy agent would be able to accomplish the task, however.

Re:Holy Mackerel!
I don't think this compares with Fermilab. The fine article is talking about creating positrons, not anti-protons. This isn't the first time I've heard about creating positrons from a laser shown upon a gold foil target. Here are two (from 2004 and 2001 respectively) that I just found on Google Scholar describing a result and a theory behind the positron production:
http://llacolen.ciencias.uchile.cl/~vmunoz/download/papers/wclpp05.pdf
http://www-project.slac.stanford.edu/lc/local/PolarizedPositrons/doc/ClassicalPapers/B_Shen-J_Meyer-ter-Vehn-PRE65_16405.pdfIt also isn't very efficient. They make 10^11 positrons per 400 J of energy input. If those positrons react with 10^11 electrons, they produce gamma rays with the energy 2 * (electron mass * (10^11)) * (c^2) = 0.0163742083 joules. Maybe it is more efficient than Fermilab, but that's still not very much. Since these are light positrons - not heavy anti-protons - I don't think these results would be very useful for fusion. Maybe as a source of gamma rays or as a research tool.

The gateway series.
The gateway series is genial. Period.
Once, I readed that Pohl asked Asimov permission to continue the Foundation Saga (in the 70's decade), and Asimov considered this offer, and finally denied it.
Seeing how Pohl has become a better writer with the years, and the crap that it is anything Foundation written after the original trilogy, I think this is the single greatest lost opportunity of the science fiction,

Re:Tactile Feedback
After a lot of years playing Street Fighter Zero 2 (on arcade), I developed a sense of "tactile-feedback" with the characters on screen. I could say where the hits landed, how hard they were, in a tactile fashion, beyond the sight and sound of it, and that was unrelated to the switches on the arcade.
My explanation? The brain is quite good on mapping. I guess that my brain just mapped all the information from the game, to something I could relate better, like tactile sensation.
I think it would be easy to create interfaces that made the brain think that you are actually touching something, even if it is through light and sound. And, once people learned that, it would just be matter of repeating the design.

Re:Controler
Worse, it is less ergonomic, at least for me. My fingers and wrists hurt after only half an hour of (joystick based) gamepad use. I have to quit just as I am getting started.
You must be doing something wrong here. Most people can play on pads for hours. Anyone playing FPSs on Keyb/Mouse for the same amount of time is doing himself a lot of damage, due to the less natural position.
Less precision in shooting is a good thing. I hate being fragged from a mile away. I love the gunshots and rocket launcher fights that involve tight spaces.
Also, it is a matter of numbers. 5 million of peoples are happy playing with dual sticks, in their couch in front of a (probably) very big TV.
How many people are playing CS, on a chair, in front of a small monitor with KB/M? less than that.

Ghost and Goblins is property of Capcom. I guess they would not be happy with such a distribution, unless a hefty license is paid. Here is the total sales of capcom licenses:
1942 series: 1,200,000 units (3 titles)
Ghosts 'n Goblins series: 4,100,000 units (13 titles)
Commando series: 1,100,000 units (2 titles)
Mega Man series: 21,400,000 units (87 titles)
Disney series: 1,300,000 units (33 titles)
Final Fight series: 3,100,000 units (8 titles)
Onimusha series: 6,000,000 units (9 titles)
Devil May Cry series: 4,500,000 units (3 titles)
Street Fighter series: 23,400,000 units (50 titles)
Breath of Fire series: 2,900,000 units (13 titles)
Resident Evil series: 24,700,000 units (36 titles)
Dino Crisis series: 4,300,000 (10 titles)

What? Resident Evil has sold more than the perfect game, Street Fighter? Heresy!

Re:Hmmm
I have a wiki about science fiction. It is in spanish, as it is my native language.
The page talks about robotech, makes a little overview of the plot, and analyses its impact on japan, the west hemisphere and Chile (my country).
The part about Chile maybe be interesting, as I point out how Robotech may have helped the perception of the militar dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet on the young generation which watched the awesome adventures of the space militars.
I have many friends who tried (and some succeeded) in joining the Chilean Air Force, who were big robotech fans in their childhood. A couple of them are of the right wing now (Pinochet's government was right wing. I am left wing).
I also use my wiki to write my own short stories. I finished the first one (El Viento), and starting a new one.

Re:Complexities aren't going anywhere
You hit the truth.
If something is simple, people will pay less for it. The money is in complex systems.
If everything is made simple, a lot of companies (or even, lone hackers) can provide the system. Then, the competitive edge you get by using IT is gotten from a complex system, again (because your competition has the simpler systems)
Complexity isn't going to go away, because that is where the money is.

Re:Energy Storage...OF THE FUTURE!
I mean, you've got this freakin' gun that can telekinetically heft and fling oil drums over great distances, but you've still gotta worry about flashlight batteries?
Flashback 20 years: You mean you have a walkman that can carry 10,000 songs, has as much file storage as 1000 PCs, can sychronize contact information, plays games, has an LCD screen, all in a package the size of a deck of cards, and you still gotta worry about the battery wearing out in 8 hours!
Wrong. Grandparent is right. The gravity gun must use a crapload of energy. No way around it. No f*cking way. The same principle to energize it could be applied to the flashlight, so the crapload of energy could be used to shed light for hundreds of hours.
On the other hand, the "walkman of the future", just uses the same energy as the old one, but in an efficient way.

Re:My Thoughts, 3.5/5
basic storyline of half-life: you, as gordan freeman, work in a top secret underground laboratory, Black Mesa, doing god knows what with equipment not meant to be doing what it's doing. Game opens with you showing up to work in the test lab (in probably the absolutely best intro sequence in a game ever, simply because of the awe you have when you realize it is interactive). Something goes horribly wrong with the sample you are analyzing, the whole of Black Mesa basically blows up, and a bunch of aliens start warping in. Your job is to stay alive and get to the surface, whereupon you realize that the government is cleaning up the mess by eliminating everyone, including you. Throughout the story is the mysterious G-man, the guy in the suit, who pops up in the oddest of places to give you consternation by closing doors you just want to go through. At the end of Half-life, he gives you a choice to work with him. hence the intro to HL2.
Condensed version:
Doom meets X-files meets the crowbar!
(I'am not a fan of HL. I played the first one. It was good, but far from the revolution everybody claims. I have not played CS, so I my opinion is not based on the full facts, but, I prefer the more arcadeish FPS, like quake or Unreal to the realistic ones, so I do not think it would change)

Re:Worst release date ever?
But it is true that gamefaqs is a VERY biased sample. They love rpgs, and do not care to much for FPSs.
Do remember that, on the most popular game contest, HalfLife 1 was beaten by Metroid Prime in the first rounds. If you ask me, MP is a better game than HL, but, historically, this is not so true, as HL was more revolutionary in its day than MP ever was.
Compare this with a similar competition in gamespy, where HalfLife won (second place SMB3).
It is simply because, the first ones require faqs, while a faq for a FPS is almost pointless.
And, in the RPG area, gamefaqs fans prefer Square ones over anything else.

GC roms are available through bit torrent.
Since there is only one GC emulator, which needs a BIG computer to run, they are not exactly popular. The other way to use the GC roms, is via AC loader and its ilk, which mainly use Phatasy Star Online I&II to load the roms into a real GC.
Face it. Nintendo still makes money from their old games, so it IS theft to copy them.

Re:After reading some of these posts
I have played FIFA since the genesis. There was certainly a good change since the 3DO version, forced by the pass to 3D. And another step forward in the current console generation. So I could say there are 3 FIFA's. The 16 bit one, the 32 bit one and the current (in which bit notation is useless).
The three incarnations are bad games, anyway. There are minor gameplay adjustment, as you can expect, but is always the same. The konami Football (well, soccer) games are WAY better.
I have played Nascar Thunder 2003 and 2004. Nascar 2004 looks slightly better, but is the same crappy game.
Madden I have only seen. I am not a fan of American Football, but, I don't think is much different.
The main feature of these games always are slightly better graphics (except in the jump between console generations, and I can predict that even this will be less noticeable in the next gen), and a bigger player database.
MP2, is almost the same engine, and a completely new game, world, enemies. If you think it is anything like the trash that EA sports churns out every year, you are blind.

Because:
-This is not an incremental upgrade. They redid the entire world, reusing only the engine.
-They do not release Mario 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, etc. There are a lot of sequels, yes, but not every year, and each is CLEARLY different. Madden, FIFA and all EA Sports is just the same, with different roosters. Face it.
-Nintendo doesn't buy good companies and make them release shit (see the ultima games and a LOT of other examples).
EA is all evil in the industry. I stealed the following lines
from a post in penny-arcade.
1) Release their sports lineup each year with only slight improvements and still charge $50
2) Buy great developers and turn them into crap
3) Buy every license they can and churn out cookie cutter games
4) Work their employees 70 hours a week with no compensation
5) Ignore the Dreamcast completely (While supporting the n-gage. Explain that.)
6) Brainwash the masses into thinking their products are actually good.
