Google sometimes defies explanation.....I was talking to a friend about "mystery email attachments", and wanted to find this user friendly strip.
So, without thinking I fire up google and type the search:
"user friendly the comic strip" email attachment
and then clicked on search. The first hit is the cartoon I wanted, so I click on it. When I pull up the page, I realize that the text words "email attachment" don't appear anywhere on the screen other than the graphic text in the comic itself, so google shouldn't have found the page - at least according to how I thought google worked. So I pulled up the source to see if there was a meta tag there which would explain this. Nope.
The only thing I can think of is that google either OCR's the pictures (seems scary, and that font which Illiad uses doesn't look very OCR-able). The other thing I thought about is that perhaps google also matches text found within <A> tags which link to that page or something.
I've shot a message off to google to ask about this but I haven't heard back yet. I'll be interested to find out how the *@(#*$ they did this.
I think that I saw an ad somewhere which said "How the @(#$* did they do that?" was the highest praise one web designer could give to another. If that's true, they've definately earned my praise in this case. Regardless, some wizard at google got their search engine to do exactly what I wanted with whatever technology they used. Technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. And google is definately magic.

"open source operating system"
and since when is "Open source" an OS?
The "open source operating system" is the OS that runs on a network whose machines run GNU/Linux, BSD, AtheOS, FreeDOS, and other operating systems whose kernel, shell, and included applications are OSI Certified open source software.
ObDRM: None of the OSI Certified operating systems place the kernel or GUI under a digital-rights-denial system (unlike retail Windows XP). Windows XP does have one advantage, however: in the cartoon world, it can turn a laptop into a jetpack. (Read More...)

That signature is from a User Friendly strip. The characters were actually Stef and Greg. See the original comic strip.

Personally,
The ads don't bother me. I would subscribe if I got access to the rejected-story bin though. That would be worth my $20.
Just noticed User Friendly is doing an ad free subscription for 3.95 per month also. -
Re:This should be obvious... OT
Sure that happened. Uh huh, why do i get the feeling you got it from here.
Even if it didn't happen it wasn't original, when was the last time you met an intelligent tech at best buy?

Not so out of fashion.

I thought

User Friendly
User Friendly is making a decent profit from ads because they get a zillion hits a day.
By the way, I find it hillarious that someone is selling commics in adobe e-book format. An 8 year old could write a program to decode them. -

Re:Talk about extending the timetable
As has been said numerous times, Intel got hurt by failing to go with the DDR standard, the benchmark still proves the Duron to be a bit better but considering they are running at the exact same clock speed, you would almost expect the Duron to outperform. Then again, Intel is doing little more than taking PIII cores and calling them Celerons. Smart move to cut manufacturing and R&D costs, but it kind of reminds me of this old cartoon.
Personally, I prefer AMD to Intel. Their K2 and Athlons have helped stave off a monopoly and they drive costs low. Works for me. -
Re:Infoworld is reporting on a *different virus*So do I understand correctly, the exploit depends on Shockwave creating a
.COM file (Windows-specific) and thus all us non-Windows users are safe until some wiseguy decides to make one in ELF format?Should I just go ahead and semi-permanently chmod 000 my libflashplayer.so? (The only thing I use it for on a regular basis are those lovely little Seattle Labs blurbs that get posted on User Friendly (which, ironically, are ads for WinDoze security products)....

Ah, so simple!
Since we don't have any idea how complex the simplest self-replicating molecule is, speculating on the odds of its forming is a bit pointless, don't you think?
The simplest ``self-replicating'' molecule is one atom. Oxygen ice, for example, forms more of itself from surrounding liquid oxygen on the more temperate planets of our solar system. But if we're talking structure, maybe salt's two-atom cubic form will do.
However, if we're talking about something that actively seeks out food to convert to more of itself, either a larger ``it'' or more ``its,'' the smallest known (Mycoplasma genitalium) consists of 470 genes (another poster placed this at 400) with a 580,000 base-pair genome, of which about 300 are absolutely essential. Informed speculation has gone as low as 100 genes (which would imply around 130,000 base-pairs), going beyond this requires a hive- or colony-like structure and some means of collating enough genes to start a new group collective organism.
By contrast, each of your cells harbours DNA to the tune of around 3 billion bases. If a strand of this DNA were unwound, it would be several meters long. If your proteins also uncurled you'd look like the dust puppy from UserFriendy. At the other end of the scale, one of the smallest known (parasitic) organisms is the Q-beta virus, at 3 genes totalling about 4500 base-pairs. This is a long, long way from standalone.
This brings to mind the Tierra program (sorry, couldn't find a good link). It was a system that simulated evolution in a simple way.
To be sure, and like Mr Dawkin's facetious weasel stunt (100% selectivity base on bare-faced teleology indeed! I fart in his general direction :-), or the more complex but similarly flawed ev program, the simulation had somewhere to start, intelligently designed rules to live by, and an intelligently designed, relatively benign ``environment'' to develop in. -

Battery Life
As another user pointed out earlier the battery life of 2.8 ~ 3.5 hours is surprisingly unimpressive.
Aside from that I've decided it might be nice to have a little wireless web pad for when i just wanna cruise through the web sites I check out every day. (slashdot, UserFriendly, dilbert, Get Fuzzy, and Dozings.com.) As a replacement for a laptop or pda it wouldn't cut the mustard, but if I had the money something like this (but with more battery life) might be a nice little addition to my bag of electronic gizmos.

Or else, that I was only a hairsbreadth away from being able to do the same kind of things. (-:

Do you like my comment? Is it not nifty?
With apologies to Sluggy Freelance
Sluggy, like most web comics, if you jump into it at a late date, makes no sense...you have to go to the beginning.
Even then, well, it grows on you. And who does not like "Bun-bun"...a switchblade toting mini-lop...heh.
Link whoring biatch that I can be: PVP, GPF, Sherman's Lagoon a long time favorite of mine, Dilbert of course, and one that was pointed out to me recently: Non-Sequitur and, of course, Userfriendly.
What is the common thread amongst all those sites I'd recommend? Intelligence, humor, referrences to other events (this usually escapes some of the younger crowd/moderators/slashdroids, no offense) and some funny characters, situations and all.
If you look at the comics on the links /. gave, well...I random sampled and was not impressed.
That's my opinion,
Cheers,
Moose. -

Re:Userfriendly - OT
has already covered this topic fairly well here
"sir, we're a monopoly, we get to set the price"
This is extremely off-topic, but isn't the point of a comic strip supposed to be that the strip is funny, or has some form of humorous value to it? Does anybody find UF funny? Rehashed, boring, tired old Microsoft jokes, linux pandering, etc.
I won't even bother saying anything about the art, as anything that can be said about it already has been.
