Competing on priceSo stop competing on price and start offering a good, high quality, reliable service that people will pay a little more for.
You're starting to think like Microsoft now.
Be afraid, very afraid.

Re:whoopsieExactly, it's not a bug it's a feature.

Coming downThe most overrated feature of the space elevator is the fact that it doesn't require the elevator to be in space again to get people down. Instead people returning to earth get to using the "swirl down the pole fireman style" method.

Re:Missing featuresBy radio I didn't mean streaming from your computer, but a fully functional digitally tuned FM radio. I'm not sure why you would want to have radio only coming from phone only when it is within the very small range of the computer.
I spose it would be more convenient to have headphones coming from your mobile rather than the PC, but then again why not just use the speakers?
-
Missing featuresYet another phone that includes both a camera and bluetooth but fails to extend the features to the next logical step. The step? A webcam.
To make the connection would involve only a small amount of code so why not? While they are at it, an FM radio is a nice (but largely ignored) touch. Also something that I have yet to see in a phone is universal remote control features for your television and stereo systems etc.
All in all the 3 very useful features (IMO) would probably cost less than $30 to include in a $650 phone.

Solar panels with styleDan Davies, an engineer at Solar Century, a renewable energy company based in London, UK, says that Spheral's new material looks very similar to blue denim.
I just know my wife is going to want, no _need_, Levi stonewash solar panels with a hipster fit.
Damn fashion.

Bite the bulletThis problem has bit me on the bum a few times too. About 1 message in every 250 spam is a false hit. Course thats about once a day
:(I know it's a pain but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and get another email address. You would soon gain the time spent migrating back through having less time spent sifting through SPAM.
Anyone getting the idea that I'm sick of seeing the complaints too?

Also...... how would this effect their plans for DRM? I'm sure hollywood and the music industry wouldn't like this at all if it came about.

Anyway, how about Internet Navigator? I think having a name that tells you what it does is a good start for converting n00bs.

Re:alike?Personally I like playing "Who wants to be a google millionaire". As I watch the show I race the contestants to the answer before they can "lock it in".
Good for sharpening your search skills, but I spose it also just makes me a geeky loser in the end.

Joe Sixpack's belief that Microsoft are the only company on Earth that makes good software, and informing them that open source even exists.

The Internet sucks more?Mostly its about adware & spyware and other wretched bits of software that make the internet suck a little more each day.
Rubbish. The Internet is getting better everyday. Pop-ups are becoming less common (especially using Moz), businesses are using better business models and delivering things on time, email filters are working more effectively, and the world is speeding towards most home users having broadband (and therefore more sites providing more content).
Life is good as a netizen.

Essential new skillsWhat can I do to acquire these essential new skills?"
Your submission doesn't mention your formal education. How about looking at picking up a certification like an RHCE, CCNA, etc?
Sure, it is more expensive than teaching yourself if your boss won't pickup the tab, but would be beneficial regardless.

Future costs?Especially as these will be pitched at the family car market, will the hybrid cars cost more to maintain? How does the cost of parts compare with the cost of gas cars? Do the fuel savings offset this cost?

Re:Urgh.. don't remind meI submitted the story, here are a few interesting stats on our programming marathon.
Team: Matt and Ben
Start time: 2.30pm Thursday
Finish Time: 5.30pm Friday
University: Deakin University (yes that meams the story has a spelling error but it was deliberate because /. is US centric and US editors pick the stories)
Coffees: Matt ~12, Ben ~9
Ciggie breaks (5 mins): Matt ~15, Ben N/A
Final URLs: Private (you don't really need them, and I don't particularly wanna hear troll comments on our code)
Accidental Walk-ins into the wrong computer lab due to lack of sleep: Matt ~4, Ben ~9 (had a shocker)
Accidential deletions of good code due to lack of sleep / backups: Matt 1, Ben 0
Final Grade: Not available yet
Reasons for lack of organisation: Lack of programming ability of the other 3 coders (their code was so useless they weren't even invited to the session, 3rd year computing students using WYSIWYG frontpage code to program HTML!), lack of organisation, under-estimation of the time it would take to complete some code. Of course we had done a very considerable amount of work prior to the start of this final session.
Dinner/Lunch breaks: Matt - 30 mins dinner, Ben 30 mins dinner/ 10 mins lunch
Days needed to recover: Matt 2, Ben ??I think that covers it.

This has been brewing for a while.I submitted the article, but after I did I found at australia.internet.com also carried the story way back in June.
Anyway interesting concept.

The CDs are NOT SPAMTo me they are more like junk mail. They are a legitimate form of advertising and I don't like the attitude the guys have going out of their way to waste AOLs resources.
I am a freelance web developer for small businesses. I have had several clients promise me significant amounts of work, but when it comes to a first "official" meeting they consistently "need to reschedule" for a variety of reasons. I consider myself reasonably flexible (especially when chasing big clients) but when they do this on a regular basis, it wastes my time that could be much better spent on legitimate clients. Anyway the point of this is that they are just trying to make a buck, so don't go out of your way to stop them for no good reason.

Not for me yetUntil 3G becomes a reality here (I'm in the great Southern land of Australia) I don't want to be downloading images on my mobile phone.
High WAP charges, already slow download speeds (9.6k IIRC), and the Nokia featured in the story is by far the largest display on a mobile currently available here (most others are considerably smaller though PDAs will benefit), mean this wont be useful for me in the near future.

Good work now ......It would please me no end to see this implemented as an option in desktop browsers. I'm sick of web developers not only ignoring people with 800x600 screens but 1024x768 screens too!

I can hear 'em nowIf you'd rather not use your own voice while playing, the system lets you pick from a half-dozen or so altered voices, though there will likely be more when Xbox Live launches.
All your likely to hear for the first few weeks is a flood of ten year-olds yelling "All your base ....."
*voice mute* -
Users wont careThe few users that do actually hear about this will, in the majority of cases, not care.
All of them know they are stealing already. The fact that the software they are using is also stealing from others wont faze them in the slightest.
BTW the mentioning of 'a charity' in the article was cheap as almost all affiliates will be merchants. It was mentioned to draw emotion, when the reality is different. Poor form.

Grrrrr closed source.

I don't like itAs much as I respect google, I for one am not happy to hear the news (no pun intended). In my opinion google has built an indredible userbase by supplying the top quality search service with a simple UI, and stood out because it was not a portal wanna be.
I am worried that google will loose focus on the primary reason that people go there, and the search service will suffer because of it. Fair enough that the service will be usefull, but when you're on top you need to work twice as hard on your primary product to stay there.
