Re:Summary of "news" story...
2 minute excerpt clips from movies..
Even the worst turkeys have 2 minutes of compelling footage.
I could even find 2 minutes from something like the killer shrews

samzenpus can't read?
summary: "I can't believe that "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" didn't make the list."
TFA: "I chose to limit myself to one fictional error message in this list, but I could go on: If I ever produce a sequel to this story, I guarantee you that 'I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that' will be on it."
Oh, and by the way, this is a classic. -

I thought the original concept of Halo supposed to be an RTS (with online play of course), not an MMO.

Re:"garage bands"
Articles about just started bands are definitely not notable, unless one or more of the members or people connected to it are already notable, or the band has quickly managed to achieve significant popularity etc. It's just not what an encyclopedia is about. I agree it's useful, but Wikipedia is not a repository of things that are useful. Instead, what you need is a wiki site about new bands, it wouldn't be hard to create one (see Wikia).

If someone could see the sexual tension in that, there would be fanfiction about it.

Wikia
Another project that's related to Wikipedia through the founder Jimmy Wales is Wikia http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Wikia
There are wiki's on many topics and I don't think they kill any submitted pages/wikis/ etc. If you think it's important enough to record, put it up.
Something that I find as particularly interesting is the "open source" search that they're building there. http://re.search.wikia.com/index.html

Re:The greatest game of all time is DRM-free...There are lots of good open source games for people who prefer something a bit more graphical too. Some examples:
- Battle for Wesnoth, a turn-based strategy game with some great single-player campaigns.
- Vega Strike, the game Elite would have been if it had been made for today's hardware (honourable mention to Oolite, which faithfully recreates Elite but with updated graphics).
- Nexuiz, a superb FPS with completely new artwork, levels, and game design based on an incredibly heavily modified version of the Quake 1 engine.
- FreeCol (and, of course, the classic FreeCiv), open source clones of the old Colonisation and Civilisation games, with large numbers of updates (and distressingly good single player AI).
- Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid, a complex platform game, full of gratuitous blob violence[1]. A sequel, this time in full 3D, was released last month.
With complex and polished open source games in almost every genre being available, it's quite surprising how much people spend on commercial games from companies that treat them like criminals. Wikipedia has a good list - I've not played more than a small fraction of them.
[1] This doesn't quite count as open source. The game is all GPL'd, but a number of images were things the author 'found on the Internet' and are used without a valid license. It was removed from the OpenBSD ports system last week because of this, as the author refuses to address the problem.

Comments not necessarily taken down
It's just as likely that the explanation that Amazon gave was legit and that a technical error caused them to be removed (it wasn't just negative reviews, but ALL reviews on Spore retail which went away). Remember never attribute to malice that which can be more easily explained by a simple fuckup. They probably have never had that many comments on any single object before and some limit was simply exceeded. They fairly quickly reposted all comments and never removed the volumes of negative feedback on the other versions of the game. My favorite DRM free games are freeciv and Scorched 3D.

Re:Jedi Knights course?
Yeah but in 8193AD you'll have to deal with the Vampire Fleets because in 8192 all Imperial and Solimani star ships got converted to the Microsoft Windows MCXXI codename "Pasidy" as Microsoft contracted out the Vargrs to outsource the design of it. It replaced the Amiga Research OS 4096 as the standard for your star ships, but in doing so made your star ships vulnerable to malware. The Twelve Colonies made the same mistake when they went to Microsoft to outfit their new Battlestars and Vipers with the latest and greatest from Microsoft until Cylon malware infected them and Commander Adama had to pull out the old Viper designs that still used Amiga Research OS and were immune to the malware.
So try to fight us space pirate ninjas from 4096AD when your starships turn into vampire fleets and your technology in 8193 AD turns against you.
John Titor failed in his mission because he took IBM technology and it got infected with malware, had he taken Amiga technology like AROS, he'd succeeded. So then I was sent to the past to get Amiga technology so we could help fight the malware.
Even your guns and light blades get infected and turn against you. Pwn3d!

Re:Poor Harry...
And I'd be pretty pissed too if someone copied things from me and published them as their own work.
I would side more with Rowling if the lexicon weren't so clearly a work of love from the author, a work that could arguably be fair use (as mentioned in groklaw, there's a good possibility that if he'd just stuck to the main books, he would have won), and if she hadn't come out and said that she'd used the website as a reference guide.
I haven't read the lexicon so I don't know how much of it really is copying, but she's been a bitch about the situation while he's been nice and tried to do the right thing. He tried to work with her, she seemed hopeful for a while and then pulled all support. That was a pretty dick move on her part. I hope that he can edit the lexicon some more and try to publish it again, this time without including the reference works that Rowling's put out and with more of his own words than hers.
I'm pretty sure she even admitted that she used this same freaking lexicon in researching her own convoluted backstory.
Lets put this another way. If this story wasn't about a BILLIONARE suing the operator of
The Harry Potter Lexicon
and instead suing
Well, i think there would be a bit more

Re:And the result...
Mostly because it's now legal to GPL derivatives. Ports like ZDoom and GZDoom were in violation before.
No they weren't, ZDoom and its derivatives don't use any GPL code because Doom was originally released with a different license.
(Although it's still possible that the licenses of the various bits of code mashed together in those ports are still incompatible with each other.)
-
Re:And the result...
Yeah, just reading about that now. I found this on the Doom Wiki an interesting read. I think you're right about the "copy and paste" (maybe a *little* more complicated than that, but not much seeing as the ground work has already been done by the Doom porting people).

Re:An intelligent game is you!
Well, I am currently a few hours into Fallout1 and I am still waiting for that one to reward intelligent actions. So far each and every quest (all three of them or so, quest seem to be incredible sparse in that game) has got me spawned right in front of the enemy with exactly zero choice to an intelligent approach, since the shooting starts instantly.
Not sure what this is about. One of the earliest quests you get is rescuing Tandi from the raiders, and it has the following solutions (taken from here):
* Kill them all and break her out
* Fight Garl in unarmed combat for her
* Buy her from Garl
* Intimidate Garl for her release
* Quietly kill the two guards in back and pick the lock on Tandi's cell.
* This one doesn't work 100% of the time, but if you enter the Raiders area wearing a Leather Jacket, have 10 ST and 10 EN and are male, the raiders will think you are Garl's father who Garl apparently killed to take control of the Khans. You can try and bluff Garl with this ruse and demand Tandi's release.Half the people and creatures I am supposed to fight are not even reachable via the worldmap, instead they exist in magical places that you can only reach when an NPC guides you there (aka. instantly teleports you there and when you exist you get teleported back).
This isn't the norm.
Reading through a few FAQs also left me rather puzzles, since most of their "tips" are based on pure try&error and abuse of the save system (save before you steal and if it doesn't work, load and try again..).
You don't have to steal things, it's just one option. Obviously getting caught has to have some consequences, so reloading becomes an issue. However, the higher your steal skill is the more likely you are to succeed, and there are also perks that will make it easier to steal. Approaching your target from the side or the rear increases your odds, and the size of the object you're trying to steal is also a factor.
And given how many times I died just because I tried to talk to the wrong person or asked a wrong question makes it clear that a save before pretty much every action is required for survival.
So far I am not exactly impressed by Fallout1 and quite close to ditching it, since the gameplay just doesn't make a hole lot of sense and the time limit and constant threat of death even on the tiniest misstep of course makes exploration a pain.
This is what happens when a game isn't dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. You have to be careful and think about what you're doing.

Another search engine has already done this...
This looks very similar to what wikia search has been doing for some time now: http://re.search.wikia.com/ Wikia search is a search engine that uses user crawlers, user rankings, comments, and highlights (which sounds very similar to what google is going to do). Check it out. The results aren't up to par with google yet, but if you search for something using a search phrase that others have used in the past, the results are reasonably good. They also have a firefox extension that allows you to rate/add articles directly from google search results: http://re.search.wikia.com/toolbar/download.html

Re:Stop Whining...
I use iplayer-dl, which has been around for a lot longer than get_iplayer.
The fact that hacks like this exist shows the ludicrousness of the BBC's position. It would take almost no effort for them to add a 'Download MP4' link to the iPlayer pages and let people do this officially, but instead they keep releasing new patches that break these things (XORing downloads that go too fast, and so on).
The BBC have to be seen to be trying to stop such non-DRMed content I guess to appease the rights holders.
Also the XORing only happens if you download the content without first getting your cookie whitelisted using two web bugs and then also if you try to download too large a block of data at once (i.e. more than around 60+ MB). Download speed is not a factor. See the Beebhack wiki
BTW: get_iplayer has been around for almost exactly the same time as iplayer-dl (ok 3 days difference!)

Re:Don't Care
Just FWIW, the last time I checked Apple had the largest product placement budget of any computer maker I could find.
Actually, Apple doesn't pay for product placement. There are a few notable exceptions, like ID4 and MI which were more involved than mere product placement and were really cross-marketing.
The reason you see so many Macs on TV and in films is because they tend to look good. iPods get shown because that's what people have (do you really think a show wants to alienate/confuse its viewers by talking about an iRiver?).
Well, call it paranoia if you want, but on this http://house.wikia.com/wiki/It's_a_Wonderful_Lie episode of House I noticed 2 Macbooks (mother's and daughter's) being checked for a possible patient history, although I don't recall any patient email accounts being checked in previous episodes. All of the hospital monitoring equipment was using Macs for control and display. Plus House was given an iPhone for Christmas. Yes, it was the Christmas episode.
Say what you like but I'm sure that the Apple company wallet lost more than a little weight to get that holiday screen time for their products.

Re:Finally!
Sure, that's fine for little boys and sissies! Real men will first locate a bag of holding, most often after completing a rousing game of sokoban. They will then attempt to find an altar, and convert it through sacrifice if of the incorrect alignment. Having accomplished that, they will dilute several potions using fountains, and with the water produced will pray over the previously located altar. Now, having holy water, they will dip their bag of holding to bless it. Having completed these simple steps, they may now carry 14 different massive hammers and the complete inventories of several dozen armored soldiers with little difficulty.

Re:Implications
I just googled for Gantris VI and it seems it is something out of some Starcraft, which may be either a book or a game. But either way, reading
http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/United_Powers_League
it seems that in this universe "over 400 million people were eradicated".
Now here in this reality, we are dealing with 30% of people, so ~1.8 billion. Just so you realize that reality has a way of outdoing imagination. -

When do they pee?
Great info, thanks.
If a UAV pilot is expected to be tied to a remote mission for 10-13 hours, that sounds physically exhausting. Kind of like driving a semi-truck for 10 hours straight. That doesn't even consider the mental stress. I respect these UAV pilots.
But when do they pee? Do they have poopy suits?
