Re:all this crap about israel
I'm sorry, but you're just wrong. Israel is even cracking down on interracial marriage, with Tel Aviv (aren't they a more liberal part of Israel?) running municipal (tax-funded) TV ads warning against dating Arabs. Don't forget the recently passed laws that disenfranchised interracial marriages, in essence deporting countless Arabs who had married Jews. You're putting your head in the sand if you pretend Israel doesn't have a problem on its hands.
About the pilots. Arab Muslim wants to Join IAF. Also a better article: Israel's Arab Problem Hits Home. By all standards he was qualified and had letters of recommendation better than most. Political pressure kept him from getting it in the end.
Oh, minister of sports. Yes, 20% of Israel is Arab and the highest any of them have ever gotten was minister of sports. Tokenism doesn't work. It's 2011 and America has a Black President, and Israel has not even gotten near the level of a Colin Powell.

It's more likely to have been Israel.
For example this story, note that its from 2009 but still make a pretty good description of how stuxnet works. Google or following the links on stuxnet news stories will bring up other possible links to Israel. -

Re:I swear
As an airline traveller, when you enter the country, you have 2 routes: 1. declare goods for tax purposes 2. nothing to declare
Generally speaking, if you bought something abroad then you need to go through 1 and pay the appropriate tax.
If you go through 2, you would normally not be searched. Although, you might be chosen randomly for a search.
If you go through 1, you need to show all the items that you've bought abroad and pay whatever custom taxes you need to pay.
Have a look here. The order was given to customs - i.e. only to people who opted to go through route 1.

Re:Cyberwarfare?

LARP: Army frowns on Dungeons and Dragons
A) That's the ISRAELI ARMY. B) We are discussing security clearance policies, not Army admission policies.
Cheesy novels and TV shows: Looked on FOX, only found CSI. NYT Best seller list gives 'Dear John' as your answer for this weeks' crappy novel. Although I prefer The Sword and the Shield if you want a non-crappy novel about the intelligence community to read (and that you have a reaonable chance of acquiring).
That book is about the KGB, we are discussing American Intelligence services.
How I became an "expert on the kind of thinking that goes on in the American Intelligence services": If I told you, I'd have to kill you. But TV News broadcasts are valid sources in open source intelligence.
And are generally not considered reliable sources of information. I mean, Fox News tells me that Obama is muslim and trying to sell our country to the arabs.
Have I ever worked in the intelligence industry: Yes, but I can only confirm dates of employment. Reason for security clearance rejection: Large outstanding debt and voluntary admission to a hospital for acute treatment of PTSD, suicide.
If anything, you had a clearance through some college intern program with a pencil-pushing research intelligence agency and were booted when they discovered you are unstable.

Re:Cyberwarfare?
Reading comprehension - get some. That article is about the Isreali army.
Or, in other words, as the grandparent implied - you're pulling stuff out of your ass. -
Re:Cyberwarfare?
More total bullshit. Star Trek and LARP are a mark against you for "some security clearances"? Not any that the American government issues. Where did you even come up with that? Pulled it out of some cheesy novel or crappy TV show? And how did you become an expert on the kind of thinking that goes on in the American Intelligence services? TV News broadcasts? NY Times Best Seller Novel? Have you ever even worked in the Intelligence industry? I bet you applied and were rejected, then rationalized it with your paranoid fictional reasons.
Star trek: Couldn't find a reference quickly.

Re:RTFA!
This might sound funny but that's very close to what some ultra-Orthodox Jews have been using in areas of Israel where they think that women aren't dressed modestly enough, or are too loud, or have perfume, or are walking down the wrong side of the street. Most common substances is pepper spray which doesn't smell so bad if you aren't on the receiving end. Boiling water and rocks have also been used. This is especially common in Meah Shearim, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem. See for example http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3795237,00.html one of the very few cases where the police have actually tried to arrest the religious fanatics in question.

Re:Internet access
No. It proves they don't If they did have internet access, you know their geeks would be surfing porn and playing WoW instead of building bombs.
Well, perhaps they are looking for some IDF porn, trying to glimpse two IDF soldiers having fun on top of an A-bomb. This way, they could take the right measures for the bomb shells of their own design.

Re:its a dated suggestion
The Israelis have discovered a drug which combats radiation sickness. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3748014,00.html
-
Possible fraud?
Fraud? Slashdot has run numerous articles about "scientific advances" by companies that want investments. Is Slashdot paid for those articles?
The article referenced in the Slashdot story, Cure for radiation sickness found? says:
'The medication works by suppressing the "suicide mechanism" of cells hit by radiation, while enabling them to recover from the radiation-induced damages that prompted them to activate the suicide mechanism in the first place.'
My opinion is that makes no sense. If a cell is damaged, and the body would normally eject the cell, a "protein" will not fix the damage. The cell will still be damaged, and will not be able to function normally.
Living cells are extraordinarily complicated. If they experience the widespread grossly applied damage caused by radiation, one protein certainly will not repair them.
The Cleveland BioLabs web site says, as part of their logo, "Controlling Cell Death to Protect Human Life". The stock reached a low of $1.34 on March 9, 2009, and is now at $4.41.
This article gives more information: Report: Jewish Doctor In Ground-Breaking Cure For Radiation Sickness. Quote: "The company's subcontractor in Europe is already prepared to embark on mass production."
I'm guessing that the company needs money to begin mass production. Also, it is interesting that an American company will not manufacture the drug in the United States. One reason for that may be that it takes years to get FDA approval from the U.S. federal government. -
Re:Cool story bro
Whoever modded this insightful...
Saying that orange juice and cola are almost the same from the health point of view is unbelievable bullshit. Take a short look at the ingrediants of cola.
- artificial sugars
- phosphor acids
- non-natural flavorings
The only ingredient of these that you find in some of the cheap versions of orange juice is artificial sugar.Known facts (check wikipedia for sources) are that there are links between
- cola and ostheoporosis due to the phosphor
- cola and diabetes due to the sugarCheck out these two links:
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3235539,00.html
http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2006/08/25/benzene-beverages.htmlBoth deal with links between cola and cancer. Google for increases in oesophagus cancer due to the increased consumate of cola.
And you claim that the juice of oranges is equally health-destructive as cola? You must be kidding.
I do have acid reflux and due to that I have to take pantozol (similar to nexium / purple pill). My physiological background is that I have an hiatus hernia. Used to drink 2-3 liter of cola (diet coke) every day. I had tried quitting drinking this stuff already, but without success. I was addicted. Like being addicted.
And from time to time I've got pains in my oesphagus although I took my pills.
Somewhere in march I read about the connections between cola and oesophagus cancer. Which hit me like a hammer. I instantly did quit drinking cola, which is now three month ago. Instead I drink pure water and coffee.
With the result that I do not have to take the pantozol-pill every day anymore. I am down to taking it every second day. Which is a huge success for me.Yt,
Gunnar

Re:Whiny bastards
The barstools are "potential" grenades too. Better check those next, and you look uncomfortable. There could "potentially" be a grenade up your ass, better check that too.
I'll spell it out nicely for you. A bomb exploded in the shopping mall where my wife and two daughters were yesterday. Fortunately, only a few kilograms of the 40 kilo explosive actually detonated. So you just be grateful that you have two big oceans isolating you from your enemies, and understand that here in the real world we have neighbors who value their 72 virgins in heaven more than the commandment "thou shall not kill".
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3690090,00.html
If you think there is a grenade in your bar about to go off, throw it in a bucket of water or move away. If it doesn't go off.... get a bigger bucket of water and knock/string pull it in there.
You do that, I can't wait to read about your Darwin award. There is a reason that there is a team of trained professionals called a "bomb squad". And there is a reason that they dress all funny and don't show up with just a bucket of water and a shoestring.

Re:For the .01% of the people who would read it...
Actually, those two journals are print journals I normally pick up in a bookstore. As for online sources, I'm not aware of any academic journals that are freely available online (unfortunately). For free online stuff, reading a nice variety of newspaper-like sites is probably as good as one can get. A few worth reading:
Science:
Eurekalert, Scientific Blogging, National Academies
Politics/Current events:
Moscow Times, Al Jazeera, PressTV, YNet, UN News Service, People's Daily
All this plus heavy use of Google News with custom sections, of course.
None of this is as good as the journals, but it's more current.

Re:-1, flamebait
Israel shells near UN school, killing at least 30
GAZA CITY, Gaza - Israeli mortar shells struck outside a U.N. school where hundreds of Palestinians had sought refuge on Tuesday, killing at least 30 people -- many of them children whose parents wailed in grief at a hospital filled with dead and wounded.
From slugtastic's post below: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3651722,00.html What do you suggest the Israeli military do in a situation where they have a danger coming from a structure that may or not house civilians? The military has a responsibility, first, to its people, second, to its land, and third, to preventing casualties to other county's civilians. Those Palestinian civilians present in the school should have removed themselves once a military force began using their building as a staging ground. I will not and can not fault a military for destroying a site launching mortars into their territory immediately. It is within their purview, and if anything, civilian casualties are the militants' fault - they should be telling civilians to leave areas they they are planning to use as staging grounds. Of course, civilian deaths are all part of their public relations war - just so people like you can look at the situation and say "Oh hey look, the Israelis just killed 30 people to take out a couple militants! That's barbaric!" Bullshit.
-
Re:If only...
The papers today said the Isralies killed dozens in a UN school
To be fair, it seems that (according the army) terrorists were firing mortar shells from structure moments earlier.

Re:Diebold's confession
Meanwhile Obama was working with the NATO countries to see what he could do to get more of a NATO presence in Afghanistan and less of our troops there. Sounds to me like Obama wants to get out of Iraq and reduce the number of our troops in Afghanistan - not move from one to the other as you stated. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/25/obama.trip/index.html)
And to be quite frank (my apologies to those named Frank), had we stayed out of Iraq and focused on the issue at hand in Afghanistan we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now.

Local article in English
Here's the article in an Israeli newspaper in English.
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3476401,00.html
I'm not a lawyer, but is seems they could take this to a higher court.
Lately I've been reading about a new law proposition to make the newspaper liable to any offending talkback , so the way the things are going is not to allow people to hide behind their words. -
One people's hero is another people's villian
This happens all the time. One side will see the person/group as traitors, spies, terrorists,
...etc. The other side will see you as a hero, role model, ...etc.
The same happened in the Lavon Affair, where bombings were conducted in Cairo by Egyptian Jews at the instigation of the government of Israel to destabilize Nasser's hard line regime. One surgeon, Moshe Marzouk was found to be a spy and a terrorist, and was executed by hanging. After half a century of denial, Israel honored the perpetrators as heroes.
The affair left a lasting legacy of conspiracy theories as a precedent ...
Compare and contrast with other cases in other places, and more recent times. -

so go easy on me.
I've been a loyal Slashdot reader for years, but have just signed up for an account. It has been apparent that over time the readership has gone from IT professionals with cute little quips to overangsted teenagers who know how to turn on a computer and sign up for an account.
While there have been many articles that have been brought to my attention that would have otherwise been overlooked in my busy schedule, there has recently been a rash of, well put nicely, stupidity being spouted at every chance these keyboard warriors are able.
These comments being brandied about are excellent examples of this downward spiral. Please bear with me whilst I point out the fallacies being brandied about.
1) The government is being racist by banning material?
Since when is Islam a race? Did I miss a memo? Granted the founders of it were Arabic, but since they only constitute ~20% of the total numbers, is it really their religion anymore? If it is, than anybody that hates Christians are racists toward Israelis since they started that religion.
2) Stopping the spread of violent material aimed toward youth means you can not counter it.
This is patently absurd. Remember when you were a kid? And how bitching Britney Spears, MC Hammer, or Christie Lauper was (depending on your age group could be some other 'pop idol')? Could you not agree that the decision making process of a child's brain is not formed well enough to make rational choices? It continues to blow my mind that Christians are crucified on Slashdot, but Muslims are not even though the propaganda they're postulating is so very much more damaging than what comes from the Chistian camp.
3) The government will not know when to stop censoring.
Ahh, the good old "They'll never stop, so we shouldn't have even a little bit". That logic works both ways, remember the Prohibition? For all the hand wringing that goes on in Slashdot, I'd dare anyone to prove that the government has abused their powers to the extent that we have an Orwellian society.
4) Islam is bad. But Christianity is worse.
I want to keep this a short post, but will just throw out some examples of that absurdity. Bombing Internet cafes Mosques telling people they'll die from a "deadly phone virus" Spreading racist rumours that melons will give you AIDS Murdering elderly Buddhists The courts giving free reign to serial killers Attacking university students, vandalising property, and stealing buses
Let me reiterate that the proposed Australian bill is not seeking to ban this material, rather change the system to avoid allowing media that is racist and advocating violence towards others from influencing childern. You must remember that their film board, by the very act of allowing the film to recieve a "PG" rating has essentially given the parents that do a poor job of raising their childern a go-ahead to plop them down in front of a tv and watch this filth.
I propose we get rid of the whole "War on Terrorism". You could never win it. Shoot, the Americans entrance into WWII was pretty much spurred by an act of terrorism. And you know what happened? The US didn't say they were going to fight terrorism. They said they were going to go and get rid of Shintoism and baggage that it carried with it. Only after they had broken that were the Japanese ready to rise to the current power that they now enjoy. The same thing needs to happen in Islam. The followers need to realise that the sway that the evil has over them needs to end. Only than will it be a legitimate religion. -

No, I'm not mixing anything up. Earlier this month, Iran claimed it had a cure for AIDS, with no proof (naturally).
But then, so had North Korea.

There Are A Lot of Stories the MSM Doesn't Cover
Like this one from yesterday:
Israel and the United States will soon be destroyed, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday during a meeting with Syria's foreign minister, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) website said in a report.
"Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad... assured that the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel will soon come to the end of their lives," the Iranian president was quoted as saying. -
Activist Companies
Activist companies and organizations are a pain. U2U announced this year that it would not do business with any company in Israel. Pain in the ass.
How about a company or org that does what its business is, and leave the activism behind.
Oh, and boycott U2U.

They basically say that you get the choice of where to fight islam's jihad : in iraq ... or ... in america. Right now tens of thousands of terrorists try to blow up well-armed and well-prepared soldiers in iraq, funded by billions of oil money from saoudi arabia (sunni) and iran (shia), they could shift their focus to the united states if there is no more reason to fight in iraq.
So do you stay, or retreat ?
Just remember one simple thing : why do people fight ? Because they think they can win through pure violence. The US can actually win, the terrorists cannot, and while they attack iraq tens of other muslim countries are being liberated because these assholes are leaving. If america stays in iraq it will be next to worshipped for 20-30 years or longer when the country stabilizes (see south korea, see europe, see ...). If america leaves, it will be demonized and attacked by tens of others. Every defeat will prolong the war for at least 10 years. And no, they can't win. But they can do a lot of damage before they lose.
So which is it ?
(and this is a political discussion and I will be villified anyway so I'm posting anonymous) -
Re:Bolshevization of North America
Not to pick nits,
but you obviously haven't read this article: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3318582, 00.html
Or this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/new s/news.html?in_article_id=411846&in_page_id=1770
The BBC ADMITS that is not only NOT objective, but that they are VERY far to the left. Of course, I guess if one is already a socialist this would appear to be "objective" but to the rest of us that are more towards the center and right-of center this is hardly "Objectivity".
Sorry, but the Beeb isn't objective, and hasn't been for years. Much like many of the newsies and other media outlets in the UK, it is a prime example of what happens when with media concentration. A restriction of viewpoints to a very small selection on the overall spectrum. It's quite obvious that you have not been properly exposed to enough viewpoints if you can't see the obvious liberal slant in most British newsies.
Of course, the American news landscape is much the same. We Americans don't have the Beeb, but we do have our own Alphabet Soup of "me too" liberal outlets that all report the exact same stories in exactly the same manner with exactly the same slant and conclusions. Fox News is really the only one even slightly different. While I will readily admit that thier format is not entirely my favorite, at least I know that I'm getting a different slant on the news when I watch them. It allows me to make a more informed decision than if all I watched were CNNCBSABCNBCMSNBC et al.
I'd recommend that you start adding FoxNews to your weekly watching schedule, if for no other reason than to broaden your perspective a bit.
(And yes, I do think it's sad that an American has to tell a Brit to get a broader perspective.) -

Re:Fake or exaggerated?
That's bull. Either Reuters editors are idiots and got pwned or Reuters is implicated in the fakery and anti-Israel propagandas. There are other manipulated photos or fake captions:
YNetNewsan F-16 dropping a defensive flare and a bomb, but the photographer thought the flare was a missile and cloned the bomb and the flare. This is just as bad a cloning job as the smoke one.
Powerline Blog: The same destroyed building was reported twice on Aug. 5 and Jul. 24.
Drinking from home: The same woman got her home flattened twice, on Jul. 22 and Aug. 5.
My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy: A caption said a man was running from a bombed building during an overnight raid, except that the photo was taken during the day.
These are what we notice. How many others that got passed through because the fake job was done better? How would Reuter have managed to pass through these if they had vetted te photos?
Hours after PM Siniora took back the comment when he reported 40 civilians were killed and said instead that only one got killed, Reuters still reported Israel killing 40 civilians. They are not a news outlet, they are a propaganda machine. -

Re:From IRC, the reason:and Israel army is "an independent organisation that does not take orders from anybody" too. Israel people is not responsible for the actions of the Israel army. Now what ?
...Let's put it other way. Lebanon gov needs help, because apparently it is not capable to keep their guys on the Lebanon territory. Even worse. Lebanon gov allowed the terrorist group to import weaponry and build independent highly efficient army. No matter what Lebanon gov thinks about Israel they should control their people. If Lebanon gov fails to use the army against private militia somebody else will do the dirty work.
But do not expect this somebody else to be a nice guy. Israel does everything possible to avoid death among citizens. You can not imagine what modern air forse could do in Lebanon.
I bet every Israeli sorry about what happens. We do not celebrate after every air strike and no one hands out candies on the streets of Tel Aviv after people got killed.

Similair case in Israel
Regarding a well publicized computer espionage case.
It seems, the authors of the spying tool used in this case, were arrested in the UK and are being turned over to Israel for justice.
This raises the same moral question, whether an author of the tool is responsible for the way it's being used.
Should Fire Arms companies be held responsible whenever someone uses their branded rifle to commit a crime? -
Actually this one has been resolved already

Intel spokesman in Israel, Koby Bahar, said the company has not made a decision to build a new plant in Israel, the AP said. U.S.-based Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy declined to comment Sunday, CBS Marketwatch reported.
Sharon said Intel chief executive Craig Barrett told him over the phone Saturday night that his company had chosen Kiryat Gat, where Intel already has a major factory.
Seems to me like the decision was made, to build the factory in Israel, but the Israeli adiministration blabbed to the press about it too early. They are prone to that. It happened before IIRC in one of the peace talks, and the US administration where pissed. (can't find a link though). -
Re:In other news, Hitler signs non-aggression pactActually, there is evidence that Stalin was planning an attack on Germany, but Hitler beat him to it (by just a few weeks). So they were both backstabbing pricks (which isn't really much of a surprise).
On a related note, it turns out that Hitler may have been the inventor of the inflatable sex doll.

More proof that Google isn't Netscape
The thing that seems so cool about this sort of thing is that it opens up the search service to the rest of us to help us make our content easier to find when it is updated. One thing that I have come to really respect about Google is that they don't rely on the government to beat Microsoft back down the way Netscape did. Google has managed to make a product that 47% of the US Internet users want to use, even though MSN is the default in IE. Remember Netscape 4? There's a reason that bloated POS failed, anyone who remembers the releases of it for the first six months that it went public knows EXACTLY why that was.
The only thing that Google can do at this point is continue to let some of their more biased employees run wild. They've been causing Google's Adsense and Adwords to take extremely partisan stances between the Dems and Reps, and that's gotten the ire of many on the right. My concern is primarily that Google will end up pissing off so many of these users that they will end up switching to MSN and helping Microsoft take Google down. Google is certainly not perfect, and I'm still wondering why Google News had the National Vanguard, a neo-nazi publication in their news feed list, but says that some of the bigger blogs like Michelle Malkin are not up to editorial snuff. Go figure, like the neo-nazis aren't biased or anything. Then there's their tendency to run ads for Hamas on their arabic pages.
Oh well, in many respects they still have a lot farther to go before they have tried as much evil as Microsoft and they are still more innovative, so time will tell.
