I just saw this video the other day where they use a device to deliver precisely timed drops of water which could be used for that. http://youtu.be/cNI-LIVs-to
The lasers could be positioned so any drop could be illuminated at any time without being obscured by other drops. You might have to have a laser scanner between every other row, or use mirrors to direct the laser to the row to be illuminated. I don't know if mirrors are fast enough

Thorium reactors would address your concerns. The plants become self regulating - reaction stops itself if/when needed. That, and the actual thorium elements are a) more common than uranium, and b) generate much less waste. Lots of videos on YouTube explaining the details, but the link above is a good introduction. It also explains the differences from the current Uranium based reactors.

What honestly could the Courier have done you cannot do with an iPad and the right application?

These are all very important points. I think there are some examples of them in the video.

For example at 9:00 the speaker talks about how proud they are that their car didn't run down some pedestrians crossing the street. The car stopped just meters from them while making a left hand turn, blocking an oncoming car. The higher level decision that I'm sure the parent would make in practice is to judge the intentions of the pedestrians on the street and not commit to the turn. Although it's not clear in the video, it looks like the pedestrians didn't even run the light. The speaker doesn't acknowledge that their car blocked the oncoming lane resulting in a fairly dangerous situation. As you can see in the video, the oncoming car eventually swerves around the Google car.

Later on, at 12:00 he jokes about how a car nearly sideswipes him while merging onto the freeway. The speaker doesn't acknowledge the Google car's role in that dangerous situation. It's a simple lack of defensive driving on google's part. Yeah, they are not at fault for driving down the freeway, but it's not hard for a human to anticipate the fact that a car in a merge lane tail-gating behind a big semi-truck is going to change lanes at any moment. The Google car had an empty lane to the other side that it could have changed into at no cost.

I think these driverless cars are an insanely great innovation for our society, and I was really impressed with their TED talk too. But I just wish that now that they have the nerdy computer technical issues resolved, they can work on higher level algorithms, perhaps consulting with defensive driving professionals. I think defensive driving algorithms would be pretty interesting too, involving game theory and optimization. They seem to get it right with their four-way stop video, where they say they had to drive forward a bit to show their intention to proceed.

Yeah, that was the point.. It is getting worse and there is no sort of etiquette established by society yet. That Microsoft commercial for the MicroPhone was about this behavior. In metropolitan areas it is really bad. In New York, people are texting on the highway (which is never a straight line) constantly, and in the city people just stop in the middle of a jam packed sidewalk. This morning a guy on a scooter pulled one out at the stoplight, and failed to notice the light had changed.

Seems like nobody read the articles. Don't know why I should be shocked. Here are some facts from the various articles and some additional searching around:

1. It collapses, side to side, somewhat like an accordion. There's a hinge in the middle of the roof and the floor, and (my guess) some cables linking the two. Here's video http://youtu.be/QTdgZ2YuAM8 of (an animation of) it being folded and stacked.
2. 5 folded ones fit in the space of one full one.
3. It costs roughly as much to ship an empty as a full. (This suggests to me that the thing that costs is volume rather than weight.)
4. The weight of 5 folded ones is roughly the same as one laden one, so it costs 1/5 as much to ship a folded one as an empty standard one.
5. Aside from folding, it's designed to be backward-compatible with standard containers - so all the same ships, lifts, cranes, trucks, rail cars, etc. work.
6. The design intention, based on the video above, is to use a forklift to fold it up. My guess is that a forklift is used at some point to move around the empty ones, too, so if you can take another 5 minutes and fold it to get the advantages it may be a win.

Actually there are PLC's that have built in web-servers these days so you don't have to rely on a windows machine for visualizations anymore either. While the development is done in Windows (although it can run on WINE), the PLC is an embedded ARM device running Linux. Here is a video video showing how to program one if your interested.

New models were recreated for Babylon 5 The Lost Tales (2007), which was done on yet another small budget.
