Re:Mod parent up...
I quite agree. However nasty the religion, it's important not to mod down its apologists. For one thing it makes the debate hard to follow.
-
Scientology intentionally laughable?I'm not normally a fan of vapid "please mod parent up" posts, but... please mod parent up. As for scientology as a *belief* system, it's batshit crazy, of course (aliens were brought to Earth millions of years ago in DC-8s, stuffed into volcanoes and blown up with atom bombs, and anyone who tries to remember this will die of pneumonia? wtf?), but not *per se* dangerous than other religious dogma. [..] But the belief system doesn't matter, anyway. The CoS is an evil cult because it does evil things, not because of what it believes - or claims to believe, since scientological dogma is just used as a tool of control, anyway. The CoS has never been about anything except power and money, without regard for anyone or anything standing in the way. That's what makes them evil and dangerous. It wouldn't surprise me if L Ron Hubbard recognised this from the start; in fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he intentionally made the beliefs so ludicrous so that the cult would be laughed at rather than seen as the dangerous entity it actually is.
I mean, let's face it; most previous times Scientology has come up on Slashdot, it's been as the subject of jokes rather than The Unfunny Truth behind it. -

And they've never gotten minus fifty DKP.
http://onyserious.ytmnd.com/ I don't know, depending on how much effort someone put into that, they very well may have been justified in being that angry. Regardless of whether or not it's a game, that guy stole something that took a lot of another player's time and energy to aquire. Appealing to the "it's a game" logic is foolish and an attempt to gloss over the time investment that person stole from another player; not to mention it backfires-- if it's just a game, why did he care enough to be such a dick to another player?
There's always two sides to a story.
Now the second audio clip not so much; there's obviously no second side to that as another Onyxia run right after the wipe is not unattainable. -

I'm ridin' spinors
Sparling wrote:
In physics, the idea of a spinor stems from the finding that spectral lines of atoms seem to behave as if the angular momentum of the particles radiating photons was in half-integral units of the quantized spin (whose size is determined by Planck's constant). This was fully explained by Dirac's famous theory of the electron, which led him to successfully predict the existence of the positron.Or as Three 6 Mafia put it: "I'm ridin' spinors, I'm ridin' spinors, they don't stop..."

It really is hard to keep track...
Daily:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ I like to start every day with the Astronomy Picture of the Day
http://www.woot.com/ and the daily Woot.
http://www.slashdot.org/ Then I'll visit Slashdot about 30 times each day,
http://www.techbargains.com/ and I'm surprised more people didn't list Techbargains. I can't stay off this site.
http://www.ytmnd.com/ Finally, I'll spend countless hours each day viewing stupid YTMNDs.
Few times a week:
http://www.apple.com/trailers Movie trailers, keeps you up to date on what's coming out.
http://www.thepbf.com/ The Perry Bible Fellowship = best.
http://www.theonion.com/ The Onion
http://www.thinkgeek.com/ and Thinkgeek, of course.
Mix in the usual bbc, npr, cnn, espn, newegg, email, etc, and that's my rotation. Really, I'm surprised I didn't see more techbargains in these replies. That should be a staple in every rotation. -

Re:Was good
Actually,
There have been about a half dozen incarnations of the original work floating around ytmnd.com
http://conandefeat.ytmnd.com/
This is merely one longer modification of an existing idea.
In fact, if you search future conan you will find many variants and even some interesting ones with Snape.
So yeah, not so original, but I'm sure there are plenty who will interpret it as suhc. -

Indeed, so far beyond cliché it has reached the status of YTMND fad! Take Future Conan Enslaving Asia, which set off the 1984 Conan fad: Future Conan in 1984, the Defeat of Future Conan, and the Defeat of Futurama Conan

Yes, Tetris Worlds sucked. Your point?Playing tetris on the GBA SP for too long hurts my hands. This is Tetris Worlds, the one with infinite spin, right? Perhaps it's the laggy reaction of the scripting engine that TW was implemented in that hurts your hands, not the controller itself.

Tetris since 2001 is "broken"
It seems that every Tetris game released since 2001 is broken by design. For instance, Tetris DS inherits its infinite spin and T-spin triple rules from Tetris Worlds.
LOCKJAW, on the other hand, is exactly as broken as you want it to be.

Then which indie handheld?I have one app installed: Tetris. Does it have the infinite spin and T-spin triple maneuvers? That is, after all, the main point of a cell phone: it can make and receive calls wherever you go. So what handheld device sold in the United States is intended for running handheld video games developed by independents?

Re:Information Sharing is part of LearningKid: how come we stopped singing happy birthday?
Mom: because Time-Warner "owns" the rights to that, and we don't want to get on the MAFIAA hit list. There's an easy solution to this problem, just sing "Spirit Journey Formation Anniversary" instead. -
Re:Leave YTMND alone...
Whoa there, buddy. You do know that it's been almost a month since the deadline and no legal action has been filed?
When I first saw the C&D, I knew it wasn't sent out of malice, and I thought it was just business: if trademarks (like the name and image of Sonic) are not defended once in a while, they run the risk of being declared diluted and thus invalid, so I thought that this was Sega taking care of its responsibility to its bottom line to defend its... "intellectual property" (bleh, I feel sick now that I said that phrase). I knew it was just an empty threat, but I didn't know for sure why.
However, someone appears to have discovered why Sega Europe sent YTMND that C&D, and if it's true, that reason is idiotic. -
Leave YTMND alone...
They can also contribute by not threatening to shut YTMND down because of all the Sonic-based submissions. YTMND is one of the main reasons Sonic is still alive right now. Link

Morons. Total Morons. Lite Brite Is Not a Bomb.
Morons is the only word I can think of to properly classify:
- the people who reported "suspicious devices" with a cartoon character flipping them off (would they react the same to fred flintstone or pacman in LEDs?)
- the people who thought they were bombs ("OMG D batteries!!!!11`1!")
- the endless media pundits saying they were suspicious (maybe we can frighten people into watching our channel longer)
- the prosecutors that went after the marketers (well, we know this is stupid, but we have to now that the ball is rolling)
- all the people who spout things like "in a post-9/11 world, we have to be vigilant" (there's a coca-cola sign that looks suspicious near me... it's all glowing and red) there's a difference between being cautious and being stupid, especially once you realize you're wrong
- and now, the folks at Cartoon Network that gave in and paid 2 million dollars and then sacked people
For anyone that can't seem to think clearly, let me make this really easy:
LITE BRITE IS NOT A BOMB -

I'm ridin' spinners, it don't stopjak2 [...] I expected a platform game, I got a tetris.... without the fun. Compare to Ryan Davis of GameSpot who expected a tetris but got a tetris... without the fun. Mike Nowak of the-inbetween.com had the same experience. They got burned by infinite spin long before they got to the boss, who plays like this.

Re:Yay linden labs
Trademark law (at least, the case law) doesn't work like that.
If you do not take steps to protect your trademark by either threatening to sue or---apparently, because I've never seen it done like this until now---granting permission, then if someone does end up violating your trademark, no matter how flagrantly, they can argue (and successfully at that) that the mark has been diluted and is therefore invalid. You snooze, you lose.
Interestingly, a recent instance of this happening was when Sega Europe fired off a nastygram to YTMND regarding an instance of [ahem] unsavory treatment [link NSFW] of a certain trademarked character. Sega can't do anything right these days. If you read the C&D, you can tell it's pure BS, but it's this aspect of trademark law (i.e., needing to defend marks in such an asshatterous manner) that gets it put on my personal proscription list, along with copyright and patent. -
