libcaca
Reminds me of libcaca.
An ascii art library with colors and whatever else, sprites, primitives, etc.
You can use it with MPlayer or your video player of choice, looks much better with colors. -
Well...

Re:Goatse
And the goatse.cx site was suspended. It's not there anymore.
So I guess we'll have to raise the money to replace it, eh?
That won't be necessary. Apparently the site was suspended without warning on January 14, 2004, but not without protest. Some thought the ".cx" top-level domain name was recieving a bad reputation. However this hasn't stopped the site reappearing under different domain names- for example, one excluding the "se" and another substituting the ".ca" TLD for ".cx". So it is still there, to the horror of unnwitting first-time viewers everywhere. It has also spawned a whole series of parodies and tributes. There is a Wikipedia article about it, with more information than you ever wanted to know on the topic.

Whoops, bad link. RIP partycat. here is a different mirror, but not a very fast one.

The first companies are already showing interest
I read about this yesterday, on my friend's Half-Life 2 blog that Valve were considering using this technology to advertise HL2. I suppose they'll have to do SOMETHING to boost sales now with last week's very disappointing news on the engine change...

The Giver? No surprise there.
I can't blame them for banning The Giver.

Re:How long beforeI'm less certain about the benefits in the porn industry.
With my sketching abilities I'd probably have a wealth of pictures in the genre of:

- lesbian ear lobe on ear lobe action
- sexual situations with diamondbacks replacing the penis

Re:riaa
would be fun if one could download torrents from riaa, mpaa and whatever those
One of the all time coolest hacks was the downloading of the DeCSS source code right from the DVDCCA's name servers (documented on the "42 ways to get DeCSS" website here as item #9). However, the DeCSS source is quite small and wouldn't bog down the nameserver infrastructure too much. ....... are called -
DeCSS
This has been used to distribute the DeCSS source. Check out #9 here . I love the fact that the DVDCCA naveserver has the data.

Re:BIND 8 patch for Verisign stupidity
There is an improved version for Bind 8.3, 8.4 and 9.2 here. .
-
Re:BIND 8 patch for Verisign stupidityThis page contains a more useful patch for BIND 8:
It allows you to add IP addresses for wildcard smashing in named.conf and gives examples of some of the other wildcarded TLD's out there.
-
Re:Preliminary BIND 8 patch
Here is my solution that does not hardcode the IPs but reads them in named.conf, which is a bit nicer.

decss.c

Re:64 bit regs is new?
A quick summary of the Saturn microprocessor, for those interested...
The Saturn processor is a propietary HP chip used in many of its calculators. It's generally considered a 4 bit chip (since this is the internal data bus size), but it has four 64-bit registers. I think the coolest part of the chip is that each instruction can operate on various portions of these registers -- for example, only the upper nibble, or only the lowest 4 nibbles. Since this is a calculator, math is generally done in BCD format. Externally, the chip connects using an 8-bit data bus. The address bus width (and therefore the PC, too) is 20 bits wide, and each address refers to a nibble of data. Maximum addressable memory = 1 meganibbles = 512KB. Most of the calculator firmware (such as calculating the sine of a number or matrix manipulation) is interpreted RPL to allow code reuse code (to save time, and to ensure bug-free implementations)
HP did a great job with this calculator, including releasing internal documenation and development tools. More info here, or use google.
It's a shame that HP shut down thier calculator division. -
Re:Heh
So, are we allowed to Transcribe the source code for DeCSS on the chalkboard?
For those who want other places to put DeCSS, check out the popular 42 ways to distribute DeCSS.

Just An Open Thought
I saw Antitrust yesterday and of course I went to check out skullbocks.com, skullbocks.net, and skullbocks.org when I got home. It looks like MGM hasn't thought of a good idea for what to host there. (At the time of this posting they have a generic "under construction" page posted at all sites)
Then I had an idea... I wondered what would happen if somebody like Jon Katz posted an open email to MGM with some of the following ideas:
- Use the skullbocks.* sites to promote open source by open sourcing the code to be used behind their "Innovative Digital Media Distribution Website".
- Take some proceeds from ticket sales from Antitrust and donate some to EFF to help support the DVD Case.
- Take some proceeds from ticket sales from Antitrust and donate some to Project Mayo (DivX).
- Post the source code to DeCSS on the skullbocks.* sites.
- Create and seed fund the cerebellum-project. The cerebellum-project would be an open source project to build a server to archive and search digital video. A joint search engine and archive. MGM should also seed the archive by releasing old movies under some audio/video GPL.
Just an open idea. What else can you think to add?
thanx, chaim

Re:So many French YRO stories...
Talking about the French censorship, it seems to me that France is one of the country which didn't decide that DeCss was outlaw.
Maybe this is some censorship then...
:p
