Homemade Star Wars Flick/Fanimatrix Movie
Geminus writes "There's a really cool fanmade Star Wars video called 'Duality' in the wild. The homemade video used only three props and apparently the quality was good enough that the makers were hired on by Lucas Films. The film was 90% made with Electric Image Universe, Adobe After Effects, FinalcutPro, and Commotion Pro. Of course the rest was the blood sweat and tears of the crew. I have to admit it is a very good example of what software can do today without million dollar render farms and special effects equipment." And as a followup to the Fanimatrix story the other day, the movie is now available: LarsBT writes "It's out. Get the full movie. Here's the torrents: normal mpeg version torrent (170 MB); Normal Divx version torrent (73 MB); and finally the High quality DivX torrent (135 MB)."
I just watched the fanimatrix movie..and I gotta admit, it was pretty impressive for a fan film. While the dialogue and actual acting wasn't all that great, the fight scenes were pretty creative and well done. The first fight scene at the goth/rave party thing started out great...the cell phone gag was clever and looked pretty sweet (the rest of that scene went downhill though). I liked the film..especially the anti-climatic ending. I recommend it...best fan film I've ever seen. Anyone know how much they spent on making it?

God damn it. I was half way through a bitter post complaining about inaccuracies in story titles and dupe posts after reading that story title, before I happened to glace at the middle of the blurb.
What, now you expect us to read the whole friggin' blurb? Why can't you use less confusing story titles? First we had to 'read the stories' before we posted, now we've gotta read the blurb too?
That settles it. I'm going over to Curl6fin, this place sucks.

It is a few years later than hyped, but I think this may be one of the first big examples (other than the machinima with teh QuakeX engines) of that "small/low budget production house music/movie/multimedia art extravaganza" that PCs, software, the 'net and broadband were supposed to enable.
Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos

Great film!
I wonder where his apprentice got that paintball mask!
For the links in the story, you need BitTorrent. Google for it.
Going at 280K/s now... If we could only submit Slashdot stories about porn !
Well, that certainly explains why LucasFilm liked it so much.
*Here be Duality spoilers*
When the masked Sith gets cut in half at the end, he bleeds. Anyone else getting visions of a similar move in Episode 4 where Obi-Wan cuts off Ponda Baba's arm and he bleeds? Does this mean the masked Sith is perhaps Ponda Baba's father? That would explain his reaction to Kenobi in the cantina...
Everything was PERFECT... except for the fighting choreography, too slow.

I posted a BitTorrent for the Duality 640 DivX here.

Mirrors of both of these:
Duality (HQ, DiVX and Mov*): HTTP | FTP
Fanimatrix (Trailer and Full, HQ DiVX): HTTP | FTP
* Note: This mirror is in progress now, a whopping 9k/s, so be patient!
The video is about 16 minutes long. It is actually decent. Don't expect it to have special effects out of this one. The only one I considered is the agent dodging bullets. There aren't any camera rotations.

There are some cool run and fight scenes. Of course, there is the nmap reference like in Reloaded movie. Running Windows with a lot of holes in this fan flick.

What you don't realize is that the download speed is relative to the upload speed. So if you have very little downloaded, you can not upload very much. However, if you wait a couple of minutes, the rate goes up drastically because you have enough content to share to enough people.
You really should read about it. The devil's in the details.

My flatmate showed the duality movie to me about 2 years ago and burned it onto a tiny 5cm CD which I stuck in one of the folds of my wallet.
I completely forgot about it and only rediscovered it 6 months ago. I then gave it to my sister who found it very amusing and said that the disc was "cute".
It's now residing in my wallet again. Just for the sake of it.

README.txt only explains how to start running a tracker and start hosting files, not how to download. I was amazed.
Think of it this way: When you start a download you get some credit to get you started. Once your credit has gone you have to acquire more credit by uploading data, each chunk you upload earning you around 3 more chunks worth of download credit. Once your download completes, any further uploads you permit before closing the dialog is pure charity since you get nothing for it other than the karma of contributing to the network.

Sorry but most everyone knew about that one almost 2 years ago. there is a much better fan film in the making (and with some clips available to be watched) at www.rewindvideo.com called heart of the rebellion.
duality had some good parts, some of the CG was hokey not because of bad cg, but bad editing and acting.
Dont get me wrong, it's cool, but hardly anything fantastic... while heart of the rebellion is unbelieveable in acting, props being made and the camera work by true masters of the art.

Sorry, guys, but this piece of work utterly destroys Duality. It's not strictly saber-fighting in the SW canon, but quite frankly I think it's miles better than Duality. (And for those of us who care, it uses a hell of a lot less CGI.)
Frankly, I think these guys should have been taken on by LucasFilm, as fight choreographers.

Would Usual Suspects be considered original? It is meant as a true question I would like to know as it caught me completely offguard. So used to movies with much more predictable endings that the ending blew me away.
I hate to tell you but the "origional" Star Wars was just a rip off of various westerns done in space. The first 45ish minutes was almost a shot for shot ripp off of John Ford's 1945 classic "The Searchers." Lucas admitted this at the time.

I felt the same way while I was watching it. It makes me wonder why ILM would hire these guys. Then it occurred to me, the reason could have been to create animatics (aka videomatics). ILM prides itself on having very detailed footage of scenes that require a lot of CG work before any animators or actors begin work. Among other things, it helps when trying to get actors in a sea of blue to understand what is expected of them.
It's obvious the Duality group can do this. Animatics have the added benefit of being released on DVD when the time comes, so there's marketing value too.

I agree it took me a while to get 5% of the large fanimatrix but once I got to about 6% all of a sudden it spiked to 31kB down and about 21kB up. I am downloading both the 70M and the 128M and will be nice and leave it up overnight.
If you're maxing out your upload, as you state that you are, you're likely not leaving enough room for the overhead that BT needs to request packets. You should use the command line options to limit the number of active uploads and upload rate to give yourself some leeway. If you set the max upload to a half or three-quarters of what your line can handle you ought to get much better downloads. This link would normally be of use, but it appears he's maxed his outbound for the month. In the mean time you can start here.
re: star wars kid...
How long do you think before some kid films himself acting out his Matrix fantasy, and his classmates releast that video onto the internet?
They are also available via http off the main site www.fanimatrix.net
A lot of people trash everything as "unoriginal" because they can compare it to something else (ref Star Wars is a space western, etc.). Well, hell, you can compare just about anything. An old Lit prof of mine in college once claimed that Shakespeare did every possible plot in his plays, provided you boiled it all down to the basic elements. He proved it by having the class (there were about 25-30 of us) shout out things we thought countered his claim. None of us could refute him; this was '94 or '95.
Stories are reflections of life, hopes, and dreams. All people have had the same lives and hopes and dreams for thousands of years. Their constant reuse does not make a story unoriginal. A story filled with older plot elements arranged in a different or unique way can be, and is, original.
There is a reason for everything. Sometimes that reason just sucks.
If you think it's bad now, wait until they start reverse rendering actors and scenes from old movies. (By reverse rendering, I mean taking a series of images, and creating a 3d digital representation of an actor. That 3d representation could then be animated to generate new scenes.) Imagine all new Hogan's Heroes fan episodes, or Gilligan's Island episodes. Same actors, just digitized, and animated. Imagine some of the Star Trek novels done up as movies. It may not be that far off.

How many great artists in history have spent many afternoons and evenings copying great paintings, sculptures and so forth? I don't know what goes on in our "modern" world, but for the longest time copying the works of the masters was the way to train and develop as an artist. Isn't this something like what's going on here?
Maybe these guys aren't interested in story writing and are only trying to hone their skills in cinematography. What's wrong with reworking the material of others to accomplish that end?
What they do isn't a career; it's the beginnings of one. I think your criticism is a little misplaced.

Seriously though, aside from a bunch of dorky Crow-wannabes who seem to have mastered muy thai in between moping sessions, this is definitely worth the download. Much better Matrix-like fight choreography than I expected. Still a fan-film, but it shows what key elements fans can adopt (like light sabers in Star Wars) to capture the essence of a mythos' style.
Personally, I think Bounty Trail is one of the best star wars fan films.
As far as comedy goes Pink Five is the funniest fanfilm. It ranks right up there with Troops.
I dont know why duality was posted, its almost three years old.

"Duality", perhaps one of the finest fan films ever IMHO, has already been parodied by the utterly hilarious "Twoness". A definite must-see for fans of fan films.
Here's a short, totally unrelated "fanimation" if you just can't get enough fan action.
Top three moments in the movie:
..where Dante sits there and fervently prays before engaging the agent. ..where Medusa busily fiddles around with nmap. For a long time. Tickety tick. ..where the operator says, "Come on man, don't do this to me, pick up the phone," while Dante is off on an Agent-killing ego trip.
:-) Love the not over-used wire work. Not so much flying through the air as in the real Matrix movies. Seems very tasteful the way they've arranged it here.

also recall how sometimes *ahem* ok, lets say often, when Slashdot posts something there is a 'Slashdot affect' whatever it is that was linked to gets flooded. For ftp and http downloads this is a definite negative situation for many people who end up waiting for their turn where as with bt as long as several people have the whole thing and assuming people are at least somewhat charitable (ok, that isn't true often but let's assume) then as more people download a file the bandwidth also increases allowing more people to have access to that file...so for now bt is a pretty good thing, of course it isn't the end all be all and it does seem to get at least a few people thinking(thinking = possibility for improvement yay [insert smile here]).. Correct me if I'm off my rocker
ok i have my ports forwarding to my ip and stuff but i still only get 5kbps on BT whats up with that im uploading at 23kbps but downloading worth crap

This is my 1st experience with BitTorrent as well but I did read the faq after starting the dl. While I found it slow at 1st I am sitting now at 70% and 110KiB/s Down and 45 KiB/s up.
Not too bad at all.
I do find that a single file open right now uses about 10% of my system resources on a PII 366 (my old laptop).
All in all better results than I would see on Kazaa.
I am a bit at odds as to how easy it would be to find files a week or two old. On Kazaa this is easy but with BitTorrent is seems a file must be left open to be downloadable. Anyone who downloads much can't be leaving much open. This technology might go far with Open Source software releases were the demand is high shortly after the release.
Probably doesn't qualify as a fan work, but Troops is worth checking out.
I agree. I'd much rather not be able to contact the server at all. :)

I couldn't remember the name. I've seen this once before. The acting is not so great (i.e. the fighting is somewhat amateurish - but they are after all amateurs). Since when did BitTorrent require a GUI?
[inq@aragorn net/py-bittorrent]> uname -sr
FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE
[inq@aragorn net/py-bittorrent]> make fetch
===> Define WITHOUT_GUI to disable GUI installation
The GUI is optional. It only depends on WX if you've set it up that way. Same with, say, CVSup on FreeBSD; there's a version which requires X, and cvsup-without-gui which doesn't. Same code; cvsup-without-gui just doesn't compile the X bits.
Oh, and you can use mldonkey for BitTorrent, which doesn't need a GUI either. Nice try.
I think it's a fair point... It's not a widely known network, and indeed, the first time I heard of BitTorrent was on slashdot. If today was the first time the poster had read slashdot, then it doesn't surprise me at all that they do not know what BitTorrent is. Personally, I think it would be a lot more helpful for the poster of the BitTorrent link to put a link to the BitTorrent client download as well, so those not in the know (which is quite substantial) can download the client and improve the network!
Does anyone have a WORKING link to Duality?
