I have to admit it is a very good example of what software can do today without million dollar render farms and special effects equipment." How would you feel if your webmaster maliciously took your web-site offline, then, when you demanded its return, put up a site attacking your company at your old URL? It happened to a group I was involved in, the Censorware Project, currently at http://www.censorware.net. The purpose of this essay is to put the behavior on record, and to give you some impressions and inferences about it.
The Censorware Project was originally an informal collective of six people who collaborated online to fight censorware: Seth Finkelstein, Bennett Haselton, Jamie McCarthy, Mike Sims, Jim Tyre and myself. Several of us had never met or even spoken on the phone, yet for some time -- around two years as I recall -- we had a remarkably easy collaboration. There was no funding, no hierarchy, no titles, not even project managers. Someone would suggest a project and take the responsibility for a part of it, others would sign up for other elements, and proceeding this way we got a remarkable amount of work done, including reports on X-Stop, Cyberpatrol, Bess and other censorware products.
Even though two of us were attorneys -- Jim and myself -- we never incorporated the group or wrote a charter or any contracts among ourselves. Mike Sims was obliging enough to register the domain, just as other members paid for press releases and the other incidental expenses which came along. Mike also served as webmaster of the censorware.org site and did substantial work for the group, including writing contributions to several of the reports and lead authorship of at least one. Seth was the source of our decrypted censorware blacklists and managed many technical tasks, but later felt he had to leave the group because of the increasing prospects of a lawsuit, particularly under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). After Seth left the group, the remaining five continued.
Robert Frost said that "nothing gold can stay," and the Censorware Project was no exception. Over the summer of 2000, Mike Sims' reaction to a perceived slight from Jim Tyre was to take the site down for a week. He sent us mail at the time saying something like "The Censorware Project is now closed." I replied to him that, given that the group was a collective and we all had an interest in its work product, the domain, and the goodwill it had achieved, the decision was not his to make. Sims did not reply.
After Seth created a partial, text, mirror, Mike put the site back up a week later without explaining, let alone apologizing for, his actions. Given his continuing failure to answer any email from me (and I think from others) and the overall signs that Sims thought the group was exclusively his, I wrote him several emails requesting that he turn the domain over to Jamie or Bennett, as I felt we could no longer trust him to administer it. We also found out during that time that important email from people trying to contact us, including members of the press, was not being answered by Sims, nor being forwarded to other members.
I ultimately became exasperated that my name was listed as a principal on what had now become a "rogue" site I had no control over. Over about a five week period, I wrote Sims several more emails asking him to del

I just watched the fanimatrix movie..and I gotta admit, it was pretty impressive for a fan film. While the dialogue and actual acting wasn't all that great, the fight scenes were pretty creative and well done. The first fight scene at the goth/rave party thing started out great...the cell phone gag was clever and looked pretty sweet (the rest of that scene went downhill though). I liked the film..especially the anti-climatic ending. I recommend it...best fan film I've ever seen. Anyone know how much they spent on making it?

While I can respect the amount of work that goes into any of these remakes, what's the point? Technology has been at the point during the past couple of years that anyone with the know-how, time, and determination can crank out quality stuff. I just find it unoriginal and redundant.

you do not want JonKatz anywhere near your unconcious body. Also, rumor has
it CmdrTaco is looking for a new goatse.cx guy. Don't let it be you!!!!!
The last thing you may be wondering is how this goes along with "taco

God damn it. I was half way through a bitter post complaining about inaccuracies in story titles and dupe posts after reading that story title, before I happened to glace at the middle of the blurb.
What, now you expect us to read the whole friggin' blurb? Why can't you use less confusing story titles? First we had to 'read the stories' before we posted, now we've gotta read the blurb too?

It is a few years later than hyped, but I think this may be one of the first big examples (other than the machinima with teh QuakeX engines) of that "small/low budget production house music/movie/multimedia art extravaganza" that PCs, software, the 'net and broadband were supposed to enable.

When the masked Sith gets cut in half at the end, he bleeds. Anyone else getting visions of a similar move in Episode 4 where Obi-Wan cuts off Ponda Baba's arm and he bleeds? Does this mean the masked Sith is perhaps Ponda Baba's father? That would explain his reaction to Kenobi in the cantina...

You have to open the ports Bittorrent uses to get full speed. If you're behind firewall/router, there's no way you're going to get a direct connection. Open the ports.
Any got a copy of Fanimatrix online for those of us behind firewalls not under our control?

This is year old news.
The video is about 16 minutes long. It is actually decent. Don't expect it to have special effects out of this one. The only one I considered is the agent dodging bullets. There aren't any camera rotations.

My flatmate showed the duality movie to me about 2 years ago and burned it onto a tiny 5cm CD which I stuck in one of the folds of my wallet.
I completely forgot about it and only rediscovered it 6 months ago. I then gave it to my sister who found it very amusing and said that the disc was "cute".
It's now residing in my wallet again. Just for the sake of it.

Sorry but most everyone knew about that one almost 2 years ago. there is a much better fan film in the making (and with some clips available to be watched) at www.rewindvideo.com called heart of the rebellion.
duality had some good parts, some of the CG was hokey not because of bad cg, but bad editing and acting.
Dont get me wrong, it's cool, but hardly anything fantastic... while heart of the rebellion is unbelieveable in acting, props being made and the camera work by true masters of the art.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.

Sorry, guys, but this piece of work utterly destroys Duality. It's not strictly saber-fighting in the SW canon, but quite frankly I think it's miles better than Duality. (And for those of us who care, it uses a hell of a lot less CGI.)
Frankly, I think these guys should have been taken on by LucasFilm, as fight choreographers.

I use BT on my iBook, and everytime I start using it, I get ridiculous downloads, right now I am getting 3.2KB/s, from the 100KB/s possible on my connection, (uploading somewhere between 8-12(my max)) Everybody seems to be going super fast, but I always get shafted, why!!!! (dramatically held)
I've also had BT's in the past with 5 seeders, and 12 leechers, where I was hardly even downloading anything. What gives? Mac bias?

I hate to say it, but it sucks next to Duality. Sorry. The acting is marginally better than the fan made Star Trek series, but in order to duplicate the look and feel of the Matrix, you got to get a stedicam and better everything.

I remember the last time some goober posted on slashdot how AWESOME! UBER! some fan clip was. Ten seconds into it, I wanted to hurl. This was better the last 'super cool' fan clip, but the overriding thing, like the other one, that one comes away with is it's a geeks wet dream as they play pretend and capture it on film. Like watching the fans in the triumph insult comic dog clip. Shiver.
Someone said Lucas hired these guys? Man is the next star wars is gonna suck.

If you think it's bad now, wait until they start reverse rendering actors and scenes from old movies. (By reverse rendering, I mean taking a series of images, and creating a 3d digital representation of an actor. That 3d representation could then be animated to generate new scenes.) Imagine all new Hogan's Heroes fan episodes, or Gilligan's Island episodes. Same actors, just digitized, and animated. Imagine some of the Star Trek novels done up as movies. It may not be that far off.

How many great artists in history have spent many afternoons and evenings copying great paintings, sculptures and so forth? I don't know what goes on in our "modern" world, but for the longest time copying the works of the masters was the way to train and develop as an artist. Isn't this something like what's going on here?
Maybe these guys aren't interested in story writing and are only trying to hone their skills in cinematography. What's wrong with reworking the material of others to accomplish that end?

Seriously though, aside from a bunch of dorky Crow-wannabes who seem to have mastered muy thai in between moping sessions, this is definitely worth the download. Much better Matrix-like fight choreography than I expected. Still a fan-film, but it shows what key elements fans can adopt (like light sabers in Star Wars) to capture the essence of a mythos' style.
Personally, I think Bounty Trail is one of the best star wars fan films.
As far as comedy goes Pink Five is the funniest fanfilm. It ranks right up there with Troops.

I saw the bit torrent download links and decided it was time to check it out. I did a google search, found, downloaded, and installed the software, and returned to click on the bit torrent link. Sure enough, I click upon the link and I am presented with a 6Kps download. Notice, I didn't specify KBps or Kbps, as the coder clearly isn't familiar with the conventions and called it Kibs.
This software proved to be a complete waste of my time, as was the de-installer. Sure-enough, I ended up having to delete the directory with files after having run the installer. You would think that after the installer felt it could take the liberty of selecting the directory to install to for me, the least it could do is uninstall properly.
So long, bit-torrent.
"Duality", perhaps one of the finest fan films ever IMHO, has already been parodied by the utterly hilarious "Twoness". A definite must-see for fans of fan films.

Top three moments in the movie:
..where Dante sits there and fervently prays before engaging the agent. ..where Medusa busily fiddles around with nmap. For a long time. Tickety tick. ..where the operator says, "Come on man, don't do this to me, pick up the phone," while Dante is off on an Agent-killing ego trip.
:-) Love the not over-used wire work. Not so much flying through the air as in the real Matrix movies. Seems very tasteful the way they've arranged it here.

I'm through with the fickle Bit Trickle. It rarely works well for the average broadband home user. I got jazzed when it started at around 10 KB/s and was climbing, but then it dropped to 0 KB/s and now it's at 1 KB/s down and 8 KB/s up. I allowed more incoming connections, but that didn't help.

Feh! Yeah, sure, it's fair and free, but it sure ain't fast. BIT TORRENT IS WAY OVER-HYPED. And I hate when after resuming a download, it has to rescan the whole temporary file first--a BIG PITA when you're downloading a 699MB ISO!!!!!!! Uploading the movie to Usenet would work MUCH better.

Well done and very amusing.
i was expecting since its made by fans, other people just like us, that it would be a movie closer to "us". like people in normal clothes watching wheel of fortune in the living room getting the phone call and they are like "wth?!" and the pizza guy comes and turns into a bad guy. then they fight and the phone rings again and he gives them a pep talk over the phone to believe they can win, etc... that woulda been cooler :P
Probably doesn't qualify as a fan work, but Troops is worth checking out.
First, the story is first-rate. Everybody has a good reason for going where they go and doing what they do.
Dante is well realized. He belongs to the matrix universe, but he's not just a rip-off of anyone else in the official movies. I like the bit with the cell phone in the bar, and the dialogue in the car at the beginning where Dante puts on a brave show but he knows how much shit he's getting into. And the "free your mind" scene at the end didn't strike me as cheesy, but as something natural for Dante to do.
The operator has a stock role, but plays it well, bringing operatorly concern and even a sense of humor (when Dante is getting hassled by the Goths).
I didn't care for Medusa. I didn't see anything but derivative Trinity, and it hurt that she had no speaking lines. Also, her fight scenes with the security guards looked like little set pieces, with bad continuity -- she's walking away from the car, then she's standing in front of flashlights, then she's kicking ass (pretty good work there), and then she's standing there again. Compare with Dante where we can trace every step of his path in the night.
Still thinking about the Agent. Physically, he looks too young and blond for the role. But you make the movie with the people you have, so that's not so bad. He did a reasonable poker-faced agent job. I would have liked to have seen a little bit of stunt work or wire work during the big foot chase.

As said, Duality is 2 years old, but are you guys(/girls) sure this isn't a duplicate/repeat article? I can't remember where I first found out about Duality, but I have an inkling that this is a dupe article. I can't find anything by searching... ah, nevermind. Maybe it was in MacAddict (considering it was made on Macs, I think) or something.
I couldn't remember the name. I've seen this once before. The acting is not so great (i.e. the fighting is somewhat amateurish - but they are after all amateurs). Why are all of the lightsabre wounds the same. It's either an arm, a stab through the midsection, or a slice along the beltline. What's up with that? (OK, ok I do remember that jango-Fett was beheaded)
