Funy thing with the FF. I spent 6 Years thinking the Thing was black ontil I read a flashback isue that showed his original apearance.

Just something to look out for in the movie.

Another thing. Spiderman was the best Chemis in the Marvel Universe. By giving him biological webs the movie made him average. Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) is the best phisicist and 3rd best enginear (Behind IronMan and Dr. Doom).

Will they ignore his technological inovations and render him just a luky geak? Or worse, will they pull off a Hulk and drag his forgoten parents into it with prenatal genetic enginearing?

Horrid Spelling errors aside, you've got a point.

There's always some modernization that happens when a movie is released. People now know much more about what is possible. A movie critic elucidats the point rather nicely.

" ...Parker is very quickly bitten by a genetically enhanced spider. (Updating the original comic book, in which it's a radioactive spider. Wouldn't that be funny now? SCENE ONE - Peter is bitten by radioactive spider. SCENE TWO - Peter dies from radiation poisoning. THE END)"

But, no matter how faithful a movie stays to its source material, purists will still hate it.

I'm not as worried about the purity of the story as I am about the quality. I.e. I try not to grumble too much over 3 separate girlfriends being amalgamated into Mary Jane for Spiderman.

I am even willing to forgive letting her survive being tossed off a very high bridge (Spidy lost a girlfriend that way in the comic)

Those things are sometimes necessary to fit a long story into 2 hours or to promote the "new" paradigm of monogamy among heroes. (Seen a recent James Bond flick?)

In Spiderman's case they managed to still pull it off. The Hulk was another matter.

One thing I do like about the Marvel Superheroes movies is that they usually stock them with actors who look the part. No 5'10" 160 lb guys playing 6'4" 240 lb Vigilantes. That's where the problems began in the Batman movies. They went far and deep, but they started there :). So Wolverine was a little thin and too tall. He was still believable. Hugh Jackman made up for the physical differences by _acting_ the part. If only more movie stars would do that :)

Have you read and seen the Bourne Supremacy? The plot of the film has nothing whatsoever in common with the book. Zero. Zip. (except the title maybe and the name of the protagonist) I was very surprised when I read the book.

I haven't seen the Bourne Supremeay, but I've read Identity/Supremacy, and seen the Identity movie. The Bourne Identity wasn't related to the book at all.

And then there was The Sum of All Fears. I mean WTF??? I still don't know who set off the bomb in that, could someone fill me in?

They cut out the first 500-800 pages it seems, so I don't really understand the movie at all. Judging by the video game it sounds like some South African guy.

If you think the Bourne Identity film was not similar to the book, you should watch the Supremacy. For Identity, at least the locations are similar, you've got the money from the bank etc (OK, not a lot of similarity, but at least a bit!). Supremacy is completely different.

That's too bad because the Supremacy seemed like the best of the three to be coverted to a movie. It had a more action based plot w/ less introspective periods that seemed easier to transfer to the silver screen. Plus it is rather topical with the rise of China and current distrust of the US government. If you've only seen the movies do yourself a favor and check out the books, they are quite interesting.

You're concerned that the actors in the live-action movies don't sufficiently resemble the body types of the comic book characters? If someone in real life had comic-style body proportions, they would stand out as grotesque freaks.

No, I think the problem was the script and the director. Batman and Batman Returns (directed by Tim Burton) were pretty good movies, IMHO. It was what Batman was supposed to be. He is an avenger with a dark side. The problem started after they tried to make it more like the TV show with the KA-POW! and BAM!, i.e. adding Robin and make it funnier and light-hearted. That ain't Batman. The franchise became a joke after that. Adding Alicia Silverstone made it worse.

It's fantastically a Roger Corman production. So right from tho openeing credits you know it's MST3K fodder. It was on various p2p netowrks and with the new film , I suspect it will get some kind of underground following for it's badness.

WOW according to IMDB it had a whole 2 million dollar budget (for a 1994 film).

Heh. Yeah, and they aren't sure what year it takes place in. It should be the cold war because Ryan is decades younger and not married, but the modern Chechnya conflict is going on. And they don't seem to understand the Chechnya conflict, because for the US to send "peacekeeping forces" to Chechnya, which we (right or wrong) recognize as part of Russia, would be a really big deal.

In the book, the terrorists were an alliance of communists, Islamic fundamentalists, and native American separatists, which was hard to swallow but was at least internally consistent.

Ye gods, I bought the book of the Bourne Supremacy.

I was left with the distinct impression that whilst there are many authors whose work I respect greatly, they do not include Ludlum. Something about his writing style leaped out at me. It may have been excess! exclamation! marks! and? too many rhetorical? questions? Or it may have been all this "fuck-fuck" "damn-damn" rubbish that he has all his Chinese characters come out with for no evident reason.

OTOH I do remember his habit of repeatedly describing specific people as "the Zhongguo ren", which is desperately annoying as it gives the strong impression that he has succeeded in researching a minimal number of terms in Chinese, and is desperately looking for any possible occasion to re-use them. Particularly since they're in China at the time, it's not exactly a unique bloody identifier either. It only means 'Chinese person', after all.

The whole thing was desperately reminiscent of those Tom Clancy characters whose English is rendered with utter fluency throughout the book, but who nonetheless pepper their conversation with meaninglessly ungrammatical constructions ("how do you say?"). Sometimes this gets extreme; you get Germans coming out with sentences like, "Just arrived, ja, we have three sets."

Someone really needs to take these authors aside and explain that:

a) Even though Chinese might sound odd, it doesn't if you're listening in Chinese, so if you don't want to cause unintentional hilarity it is best not to bother with all that "fuck-fuck" crap beyond the bare minimum required to establish the point.

b) Russian people really don't say 'Tovarisch' anymore (Stargate need to learn this too. Ouch).

c) When speaking a second language it is generally not the case that you remember all of the hard words and complex grammar but fluff up on 'yes', 'no', and 'shit'. The really funny thing about (c) is that Clancy gets it right where his Anglophones are concerned, eg:
"'Bitte sehr, Herr-Direktor,' the Brit answered, just about exhausting his knowledge of the German language."

Still, apart from that it might have been a good book, but to be honest I quit taking it seriously after the bit where d'Anjou gets his head chopped off (what sort of final words are "Come die with me, General Dung!"?)

I totally second that. With the sixties setting, the James Bond music, even the the Mole Man (The Underminer), The Incredibles was the best Fantastic Four movie one could wish for.

There's no way the upcoming FF flick can top that. Seriously, the promo pictures look like a SciFi channel miniseries.

Jessica Alba is hot as a brunette, but Susan Storm is a blonde, and I don't think Alba can pull off blonde well. However, Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm and Julian McMahon as Dr. Doom look like good matches to me. As for the rest, I'm not really familiar with them, so I couldn't really say.

There're some stills here. Mr Fantastic at least looks too young, he should be mid 30s at least, he was a patriarchal figure. And I never recognised Jessica as a blonde....

The cast seems to be taken from a big jar with bingo balls with names of bland young actors and actresses.
The guy from the Gillette commercials seems to have been drawn twice by the Bingo machine and plays
both the roles of Mr Fantastic and Human Torch.

I thought they made the Fantastic Four movie five or ten years ago but that for whatever reason, they decided not to release it after all (once it was already made!) and put it away somewhere? I know I've even seen xvid copies of it around the net.

Also, since I'm almost 30 and have no clue what the fuck fantastic four are, I can presume it's an "over 45 years old only" kind of thing?

Don't know who the Fantastic Four are?!?!
I can only guess that you live in a country/region where for some odd reason Marvel didn't ship as many F.F. comics as thier other lines.
Kinda wierd idea though considering it was a pretty important title. It was the FF the got Marvel back into the Super Hero bussiness in the early 60's, they had gone to monster/horror type stuff when the superhero comics became on of the 'satan worshiping/mind controll/reason teenagers behave like teenagers' things of thier time (much (A)D&D of the 80's or rock and roll, etc.)
To give you a clue to the FF's influence I suggest you look at both Darth Vaders outfit and Dr. Victor Dooms outfit, then consider Dr. Doom predates Darth Vader by over a decade.

Reed and Ben went to college together and then served in WWII, and the comic started ca. 1962 so they were both definitely at least 40 when the series started. Sue was younger than Reed, and they got married later in the series.

What do you mean he predates Darth by over a decade. That's an understatement: I read Fantastic Four comics with Dr. Doom when I was a kid and I'm about to turn 52. I will have to say that I do enjoy some of the "comics to movies" transitions that have happened but in the same sense I really hate it when they screw up the story lines. Who told them that the Hulk grew over 15 feet tall when he changed from Bruce Banner to the big green guy?? I was impressed with the Spiderman job. I can't wait to see if they attempt a movie of the original Justice League of America or the Metal Men. Even Iron Man or the Green Arrow would be cool! Just eating my lunch on my second job and thought I would drop a few lines. I've never done anything like this before but these old comic books got me through some tough times as a kid. Later all!!! Well to be honest I was being a bit vague as I don't know exactly when Darth vaders 'look' or Dr. Dooms look was first decided on and figured someone would get pedantic with trivia and correct any specific statement.
Going by public apearance it's about 14.5 years (nov 1961 to may 1976).

I stopped by to watch one night when they were filming a scene in Vancouver... Where Ben first (re)introduces his, uhm, new and improved self to his girlfriend. ( a somewhat delicate affair for someone with fingers the size of a baby's arm ).

I think when people look back at all the comic-to-film adaptations, that Hulk will stand as one of the stronger ones.

For some reason the group mindthink took hold and people trashed it without giving it a fair chance (or even seeing it in many cases), but it is a good movie. It had innovative camera direction, shots and movement that paid homage to comic books while still retaining a strong dramatic storyline and acting.

Personally, I think it was better than Spider-man, and is as good as X-Men...

Me too. I mean what did people expect from the movie? Its a movie about a guy who goes nuts and smashes things, and there was a lot of nut going and thing smashing occuring. And in addition to that it had a plot which was a lot less crappy than it could have been.

Sure the father's power was kinda stupid, but really you had to have a villian that give the Hulk a run for his money. Unless you wanted a crappy villian with the ability to make people rationally discuss their differences, using a gamma mutant was the only way that didn't involve setting up a completely unrelated backstory.

According to Comics2film.com, additional stretchy scenes for Mr Fantastic have been hastility added precisely to avoid appearing as a weaker version of The Incredibles. Initially there were not many, it being the most complex effect in the film.

Scenario A) People who want to see the trailer will force themselves to go see Elektra, which they had no interest in before, only because Fox is so desperate to make some money on Elektra that they would go so far as to try to deny the power of the internet.

Scenario B) There will be a torrent posted here in 3...2...1...Who knows, we might end up with a torrent to the entire movie here before it has even been completed. Thus is the power of the internet.

Now the real question is whether these movies are being produced becase they are a hit or they are running out of original ideas over there

Hellboy, From Hell, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are a few of the movie adaptions of comic books you missed (these have never been adapted as cartoons).

Neil Gaiman suggested that the reason Hollywood like comic books as source material, is that Hollywood produceres don't like reading books.

The Fantastic Four was done years ago already. It was so horrifically awful though that it was never released. The rumour is that the studio only made it so they could keep the rights to make it at a later date. The power of the internet brought that film to my computer when I accidentally used a Bit Torrent. I can inform you that it was terrible and that I loved it for that reason alone.

You say it like it's some sort of collective who is doing everything. It's not. It's one guy. Well, one guy and all his peeps.

Ever heard of Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics? He's the producer of every single one of the movies you mentioned.

Every ten years or so he makes another try at getting them popular again. Twice since the sixties the fad has reached the movie phase (this being the second time), and he rode the fad until it died out. No really new ideas - the ideas themselves are rather timeless - just a new setting. Peter Parker actually wore bellbottoms and had 70s hair last time.

Another three decades or so and he'll probably make movies again...if he somehow finds a way to become immortal.

Indeed. And the world of hip-hop has as well, seeing as two different rappers (MF Doom & Kool Keith) have either used the name or likeness of Dr. Doom in thier work. MF Doom's recent album is replete with some pretty hysterical samples from the old Fantastic Four cartoon.

There have been two Dr. Strange films. Okay, neither used the name Dr. Strange because they never bothered to get the legal rights and so they created an obvious clone, but it was the Doctor. One was a TV movie, and one starred Jeffrey Combs of Re-Animator fame. By the Eye of Aginimoto, they were suckingly bad and had too much MSG.

hollywood does not want new, fresh or different. they want what the RIAA wants... the same thing over and over and over and over again.

once in a while you get something different, but it is very rare.

Yes I enjoyed "meet the fokkers" but PLEASE let that script rest.

Hollywood is the definition of the word WHORE. because that is what they do to everything and THEN overpay the actors.

I would pay a hunderd bucks to see an accurate real life Galactus (& not just his hand or something). How 'bout a little scene where The High Evolutionary & Galactus go at it? Or where the Hulk bends the Surfers' board, or maybe the scene where Reed Richards announces that, "Galatctus MUST LIVE!". (see how that ties into th end of the last X-men movie, what whith Dark Phoenix & all, tee-hee) The tie-in to other Marvel properties could be enourmous. Does anybody know if the Avengers are coiming to the big screen? The Scarlett Witch would be freaken' huge....(breasted that is). Actually if I had my druthers, I would want Lucas to make ROM right now. :)

"Dennis the Menace, The Movie"? That's a totally fscked up idea!

They already did that horrible animation, didn't they? All the characters had cockney-lite accents, despite the fact the cartoon has always been created in Scotland (though, as they said, Dennis the Menace always came from where the reader came from, and the London-centric nature of British TV means that a London accent is 'generic').

And they probably couldn't sell it as Dennis the Menace in the US, for the same reason that the American Dennis the Menace cartoon was shown on British TV as just "Dennis". (As someone pointed out, the American Dennis was just a mischevous kid; the British one *was* a menace).

Brad Pitt as Walter the Softy? That brings to mind some sort of reverse Tyler Durden situation (Spoiler follows for the few that haven't seen Fight Club). Is Walter just a figment of Dennis's imagination, the soft side that he daren't expose?

Oh yeah, and Kevin Spacey as Dennis' Dad is a great idea!

Yes, some studio (can't remember) is planning on releasing an Avengers film in 2007. And yes, it would be cool to see a film appearance by Galactus, but Hollywood has a problem with morally ambiguous antagonists, so who knows if they'll put him/it in the Silver Surfer film.

Actually, Stan The Man just gets a token executive producer credit and a cameo in all these movies. He's not making any/much money. Marvel owns the rights to all his work. He gets included out of reverance and also to give the films legitimacy.

The guy responsible for all the Marvel movies being produced (good or bad) is Avi Arad.

It's also a cheaper. Most comic books are written in screenplay format and the comic books themselves are great storyboards which they can use.

Some revision of the screenplay original and they have themselves a working script.

Although Lee is often credited with being the "creator" of Marvel Comics, he actually started working there as a copyboy when it was still known as Timely Comics, founded by pulp publisher Martin Goodman. Not to take anything away from Stan...he's certainly helped make Marvel the success it is today.

Depending on the posters background, comic books are cartoons. Saturday morning tv entertainment is animated cartoons to a number of people. Check out any book on the "cartoon" industry and it will be about ink on paper/newsprint not ink on cell.

I saw a screening of this when I used to work at ILM. I agree -- it was deliciously bad.

One trivia point though is that the fire effects were one of the first uses of Dynamation in a film. (Dynamation became the dynamics package in Maya).

The presenter (who did the effects) said the reason for making the film had to do with maintaining the movie rights rather than a serious attempt at making a film. I don't remember the details, but it was something like they had to make a movie within 10 years, or the rights would revert back to the previous owner.

...after the travesty that was Daredevil, I'm not sure I can bring myself to go see Elektra. Pity, I had high hopes for both movies, being a fan of the original comic book stories...

I swear, they're just doing something right with Spiderman. Even X-Men was just OK, I thought. Even the off-beat comics-to-movies (Ghost World, American Splendor) really only have appeal to total afficianados.

I'm certainly looking forward to Sin City, tho. Maybe there'll be an adaptation of some of the more oddball comics, like Mr. Natural or the Freak Brothers.

I must admit that Sin City is one of the few upcoming "comic book adaptations" that I'm actually contemplating seeing. Most everything else looks to be drivel in the same mould as Daredevil and Hulk. Comic book based films haven't generally proved to be as bad films based on computer games, but they do seem to do a fine job of butchering them none the less. The problem mostly seems to be that the filmmakers don't seem to get the comics - they seem to presume that if you translate the characters and something resembling the storylines over they've got all they need. What they lack is the feel, the spirit, the essence, the thing that gave the comic interest and vitality. I have to credit Sin City, because from what I've seen of the previews, at least they're trying to actually translate the feel and the style to screen. Whether it works is yet to be seen, but at least it doesn't look like every other standard Hollywood film.

Next spiderman is clearly going to hail the return of the green goblin, who hopefully won't be as cheesy with the new guy playing him as he was in the first film, and will also hail the arrival of that astronaut that Mary Jane blew off the marraige with... He'll go into space and get mutated into someone... Venom I think it is... And then he'll seek revenge on Peter for marrying mary jane, and maybe revenge on mary jane for dumping him, and maybe he and green goblin will fight over who gets to kill Peter.

I think they changed the character to an American. Which is typical laziness on Hollywood's part. It's not like there's a shortage of British actors. There's even quite a few American actors who can do a decent accent.

Laziness or narcissism? Moviegoers like protagonists that remind them of themselves. It's easier for American audiences to project a heroic self-image onto an American Constantine, even though it is a ludicrous bastardization to fans of the comics.

Please, please let me win the lottery.

I mean really. V for Vendetta has so many elements the movie industry just cannot allow to be translated into cinema: promotion of anarchy, lots of in-jokes on the occult, a "good guy" taking acid to understand something etc.

The movie version will be a freedom fighter vs. fascism thing featuring beautiful explosions of various landmarks. V will not assassinate corrupt and perverted political leaders, he will merely ruin political agendas and death will occur largely off-screen. The end of the movie will not feature a public attempt at anarchy.

Alan Moore is soooo right in not allowing them to use his name anywhere in the movie.

There's more than those two. How about Ewan McGreggor and Pierce Brosnan? And we only need someone who can play British. Elijah Wood and Sean Astin must both be big names after LotR. Are the McGanns known outside Britain? Ioan Gruffudd is British, and was seen as good enough for Fantastic Four. Personally, my top choices would be Jack Davenport or Sean Bean. Admittedly, they're not huge names, but neither were Toby MagGuire or Ron Perlman. People still saw the comic book movies with them in.

The cold war was a big part of the Watchmen. That kind of makes it hard to adapt. You can try a few of things:

1. Use something else (war on terror?) to take its place.

2. Set the story back during the cold war.

3. Ignore the serious cold war themes entirely.

IMHO, Options 1 and 3 will ruin the movie. I like Option 2 but that's going to bring up parts of the 70's and 80's that are not glamorized today (i.e. There isn't an "I Love the Cold War"). This would mean that either the majority of the younger audience will be alienated or there will be entirely too much of the movie devoted to explaining the nuances of the cold war.

In short, I think that Watchmen will be screwed up seriously. That's very sad because it is one of my favorite comic book series (or do you call that a mini-series?).

That would be great. It reminds me of the episode of the Freak Brothers where they decided to quit drugs. In each panel, things got more and more "real" looking, until near the end, when the panel was an actual photo of three guys sitting around a table, who looked just like the Freak Brothers. Then, "Klang! Honk! Tweet!", and they were back to their normal, cartoon drawn selves.

You got it wrong, J.Jonah Jameson's son gets radiated or infected by meteor stuff and becomes Wolfman, The One Armed Science Professor that Peter has Dialogue with in the movie(also a friend of Otto Octavius) becomes the Lizard and Harry becomes the Hobgoblin, not the return of the Green Goblin! These three guys were all introduced, to give us the possibilities of 3 bad guys in Spiderman 3!

Actually, when I was watching the DVD back I noticed Venom in the opening credits. With the idea of Venom being in Spidey 3, I would bet my shirt that when Mary Jane kisses the recently returned from space astronaut, then Peter Parker, she is actually passing Venom on. Originally Spider-man got Venom from a trip into space with the X-Men but obviously they can't do that for licensing reasons.

That sounds about right, Spidey steps into a black puddle - it becomes a living costume which he can call at will and adds more strength and powers, until it tries to take him over. One of the best villains in my book.

The original Burton Batman did a pretty good job of capturing the "feel" of Batman (at least for me). The 2nd Batman was even better in that regard. Then the franchise went sharply downhill (although I've heard some good things about the upcoming Batman movie with Christian Bale). For that matter, "The Rocketeer" was a halfway decent (though sadly obscure) film translation of a comic/graphic novel. Having said all of that, you're right that the majority of the Marvel-sanctioned stuff that's been coming out lately is pretty lame.

But so far, the movies with some variation of the word "man" in the title have only done well. So, like even numbered Star Trek movies, only expect Marvel films to be good if they contain "man" or "men" in the title.

But there is always an exception (for example, Star Trek: Nemesis wasn't that great). Maybe the exception will be the Fantasic Four movie. Or maybe they can rename it, "Three Fantasic Men, and one Fantastic Woman."

Or maybe I'm a freak. Just please, please don't suck.

It will. The production has been switching between scrapped and "going to see the light of day". The first time it was scrapped an edit of the film was leaked to the p2p networks. Unless this is an entirely new filming with an entirely new script, DO NOT waste your money, it is terrible. Like, worse than Gigli. The ONLY reason you could enjoy this is if you like mst3k and have several friends to whisper wisecracks to in the theater.

I find it inexplicable that movie producers don't let their trailers out into the wild of the Internets. If you want to put movie trailers on your website, you have to go through this incredible rigmarole - in Australia you have to purchase a license from APRA (the Australian Performing Rights Associaton), and then obtain permission from the owner/distributor of the movie to make their trailers available (legally).

When you consider that these things are essentially glorified ads, then it is somewhat irksome.

This is unbelievably retarded. I don't understand exclusive anythings when it comes to advertising - from "exclusive" movie trailers to "exclusive" game demos. Way to deep-six your advertising campaign on day one. Especially when the cost of internet distribution of such media is effectively zero:

Step 1: Make it difficult to view your advertising.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Somehow profit. (When nobody saw the movie / game because nobody saw the trailer / demo).

Genius. I'm the exact target audience - it's almost certain that I'm going to see both Elektra and Fantastic Four when they're release - and even I think the "exclusive" trailer is a totally stupid idea. And the MPAA thinks that *movie piracy* is causing them problems!

Because human nature being what it is, and rabid geeks being what they are, this makes a piece of advertising seem somewhat more interesting and desirable.

It's like Gucci, or another luxury brand. If everyone had it, no-one would care (the Burberry brand in the UK has lost all cred for this very reason). But if something is 'exclusive' and hard to get, and the geeks have to put a little effort into seeing it, the perceived value goes up a lot, which rubs off onto the perceived value (and hence quality) of the film.

Everyone else will get to see the same advertising puff in similar or identical form a couple of weeks later...

It's the same with a lot of 'exclusive' crap. Personally, I couldn't give a damn about most of it.

I would say it is important that they look AND act how they should when acted out on film, but also do something new that the comics have not done.
IMHO the X-men movies have done exactly that, they have shown the usual heroes we all know and love but in a different way. e.g. it is nice to see Rogue before she absorbs Ms. Marvel's powers i.e. to delve into her real mutant ability rather than just being a strong flyer who is also pretty invulnerable. To my mind, this would not have been as good if she was a Canadian accented oriental dwarf (not that there is anything wrong with such a person - but that person is not ROGUE).
I appreciate I am not really adding anything new from what I said before except I do stick with the comics, but I would also like to see new ways of portaying the comic characters without destroying the originals.

Well, that's just it. Most of X-Men's popular characters have well defined backgrounds. To be portrayed convincingly, you'd need an actor that can plausibly appear to have the same background: Nightcrawler would have to look like someone from central Europe (probably white; Storm would have to pass for Egyptian (probably black or Arab), Rogue would have to look like someone from southern Louisiana (probably white, maybe black), and Logan would have to look like someone from northern Canada (probably white, maybe native American).

Other characters don't have as well defined back stories, and could be played by anyone who can get the personality right. None of the original characters -- Jean Grey, Professor X, Scott Summers, and Hank McCoy -- really has a clearly defined background in the same way that the later ones did. While they were all drawn as white people, any of these early characters could be played by a non-white actor.

Note also that casting happens in a broader context: the director is always going to have a limited pool of actors available, and not all of them are going to be perfect fits for characters that the audience is already familiar with (unless you're talking about Harry Potter, in which case pretty much every British actor in the world seems to be willing to take a part). In some cases, the best actor for a part doesn't fit the audience expectations, but can do a good job anyway. For example, in 1990, one of the main parts in Miss Saigon was given to Jonathan Pryce, a white actor, because, in the opinion of the director, he was the best fit for the role. And maybe he was -- he's a fine actor -- but it generated a lot of protests at the time. Whether or not those objections are fair is a subjective matter, depending in part on how much that character's identity depends on ethnicity. If memory serves -- I can't find a URL backing this up, so I may have it wrong, but I'm pretty sure -- a court agreed that it didn't matter, and the show went on.

So it was, a decade later, with X-Men, and now, with Fantastic Four...

Maybe Hollywood could stick to ORIGINAL ideas?

I remembered seeing a preview for a Fantastic Four movie on a VHS many years ago, it looked terrible, and I never heard anything more of it. It apparently turns out that a movie was made in 1994 and, I guess, never actually released. IMDB (the link) provides some insight into why it wasn't, and what the goal was originally. So, Hollywood will not only steal your childhood and market it to you again later on, it will also steal your childhood for the sake of marketting it to itself! Hooray for Earth!

Well yes (IMHO). SS was also one of my favorites (it was the first Marvel graphic novel that I ever bought...around 83 or so) I made joke eralier in this thread, but I really would like to see ROM, The Avengers (both East & West Coast & Nick Fury in particular) , more of the X-men (& especilly X-men villians. Damn it would be good to see that guy who controlled ship). Lets see, there is Venom (maybe in Spidey-3?), Sandman, The High Evolutionary, The Wraiths, Agatha Harkness, Her, Prince Namor-the Sub Marnier, & a host of other characters/titles that escape my memory rihgt now. In short I would like to relieve my childhood hobby of collecting comincs (yes, I had an orignal FF #7 & my mother threw it awat!!!!) & see how they translate into "real life".

I remember seeing a poster for it for sale in some comic book shop or other, back in college, and the fella had talked about how rare it was but how it had no real value because no one seemed to want it. Said the flick was directed by Roger Corman (which is incorrect, as he only produced it), and said it was rumored to be awful, which is why it was never released.

Actually, original ideas should be more profitable. There are no royalties to be paid, and they get all rights to any merchandising and future movies. But they are gonna be more risky. But I don't see why a well thought out original super hero movie could be made and be very successful.

Not anymore. Since Serenity was pushed back to September, the trailer will be attached to The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy in May, which seems to me a much better deal. When is a proper trailer for Hitchhiker's coming out, anyway?

1) They're shooting in Vancouver. Not to disparage the incredible film industry up there. But one of Spider-Man's greatest assets has to be its adherence to New York being a backdrop to the life of Peter Parker. The stories are ridiculous, anything that grounds them deeper in reality, adds character, and boosts suspension of disbelief works. And in Spider-Man it does - the city is a supporting character.

The problem isn't that they're shooting in Vancouver - it's that they're using it yet again to stand in for New York. Which only works in Jackie Chan movies where hovercrafts run rampant on the streets. There's something that's just too clean about Vancouver that doesn't translate and you know it, period.

2) It's reeking of Punisher / Daredevil and not Spider-Man / X-Men. The major difference? At their core, the charcter arcs of the latter films are totally believable and relatable. The X-Men are every societal outcast. Spider-Man is the everyman with an incredible secret life who's really, really good at something but can never sell out because of a true, guilty conscience. And he happens to be a normal person. That's what makes these films work, period. The costume changes don't matter. It's truth to the story and how people respond to them. So much so, I like to call Spider-Man 2 "The Passion of the Peter Parker"

The Fantastic Four's modern relevance and situational metaphors just aren't as compelling to a broader audience. Not in this shape and form. The lead performers may be suitable but no one has marvelled at their casting. When Hugh Jackman and Tobey Maguire first were shown as their characters, doubts faded. We knew they'd nailed the essence of their characters. Though Peter could use some more wisecracking.

I think in everything I've seen that Chiklis gets it - but the rest of the actors strike me as just blank.

They filmed some scenes in New York. In fact, they filmed a scene 2 blocks away from my house in Brooklyn. Something with a bar under the elevated subway.

I live in Vancouver, and a few months ago, my wife and I were heading out to meet friends for dinner. We walked through a section where they were filming the Fantastic 4

I saw a NYC garbage truck, and NYC police car, flipped on it's back, all beat up.

They'd also added a fake subway entrance (it looked way too small), and changed some signage on some shops.

Unfort, Vancouver does look quite different from New York; I remember seeing Ebert review one of the first Jackie Chan movies that made it over here, and it was supposed to take place in New York. Ebert said something to the effect that he'd never seen New York without trash covering the street. It was Vancouver, of course.

Interesting that you bring up X-Men as a great movie, and complain that location is important. Both X-Men movies were filmed in Vancouver.

Someone else (who I plagiarized, probably Wil Wheaton ;) wondered in a review whether there were mountains in the Bronx.. Being that in several scenes in "Rumble in the Bronx" you could clearly make out Grouse Mountain.

Then again, Sam Raimi shot Spiderman 2 in NYC and there was a remarkably improbable stretch of elevated R train in Manhattan..

He was saying that Vancouver as a stand-in for New York sucks, not that Vancouver does.

The only part of X-Men 1 that took place in New York was the fight at the Statue of Liberty.

I can't think of anything from X-Men 2 that was supposed to be New York; plus, half the movie took place in Canada, so it's helpful to film there.

Elektra looks forced and this is probably trying to boost it a bit and with FF they are probably trying to cash in on what the incredibles did earlyer last year.

I saw it the day it came out, and had no preconceptions going into it.

It was depressing, boring, and the CG effects were terrible.

Bruce Banner was utterly boring as a character, whereas his father was so over the top it was comical. The people Bruce surrpunded himself with were also boring as hell.

The fight scene with the mutant dogs was so dark you couldn't even see anything going on, which was probably a good thing because what you could see of the dogs looked underalisitc and stupid, and in general the CG was terribly done. Hulk's skin didn't look real, and while they blamed that on it being difficult to make green skin look real, they can't use that same excuse for his shorts which also looked totally fake. It's like the artists painted each with a single hue, so they looked cartoonish rather than like real objects. And Hulk could have used more dirt and specular to make parts of him look dirty and parts of him look sweaty. They just put no effort into it at all. I could go back and retouch him in photoshop and get him to look more realistic, and I'm not even a professional artist.

There wasn't even enough action. The only thing Hulk has going for him is smashing things, and he didn't even smash much.

So far the best comic book adaption is X-men. Yes, x-men. Why? For starters, it is PERFECTLY CASTED. Every single actor in x-men is 100% perfect for their roles. Secondly, the movie is more true to the comic book and the original cartoon series. In the original cartoon series, rogue is like 30 years old.

I really hope that X-Men 3 will have something to do with the phoenix.

If the third movie doesn't have Phoenix in it, I will more than likely wait for video to see it. That teaser at the end of the second film was great, and I have been waiting for the third movie in the series since. Not for the sake of another X-Men movie (I enjoyed both of them), but for a movie with Phoenix in it.

I still think they should do a Wolverine movie based on a graphic novel, or one of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde. Maybe I will get lucky and the third X-Men movie will have not only Phoenix but Kitty in it as well (More than just her running through some walls here and there). Even if her existance there causes some problems in relation to the timeline of the comics. I think it could work okay.

This was already made They just wouldn't release it. (Never saw it but, I've heard it was that bad. I mean, not even "direct to VHS" bad, but "burn the reel" bad.)

You can see the trailer for the previous one at the begining of a flick called Carnisaur. (I'm ashamed to admit that I rented the movie not to watch it, but for the preview before it.)

If anyone knows of a leaked copy of the other version, I'd like to hear first hand what the issues with it were.

The version you're thinking of is the Roger Corman produced film from 1994. Apparently the special effects were so bad and the acting so cheesy that they scrapped the whole thing in between early marketing campaign and its release. Early teaser posters were sent out, and are now collector's items. The film is only available in bootleg, but I have seen DVD and VHS copies available on Internet auction sites.

According to Marvel, the Roger Corman version was never intended to be released. To keep their rights to it they had to make a movie. It was worth it to them to spend 3/4 of a mil or so to hold on to it. I have a copy on DVD, it's not that good. The effects were terrible.

Marvel seems to have learned its lesson from the abysmal Captain America movies from the 80's. Oh, yes. I have this on VHS, bought it off eBay in a very weak moment. I have watched it, and I can truly say ... the costumes of Ben Grimm and Doctor Doom are reasonably authentic, about what you'd expect on a Power Rangers budget. And the rest of this movie? Holy snot, it's bad. Take the worst movie you have ever seen, grab the "bad" knob, and twist it sharply to the left.

The final scene will stay in my scalded brain forever: Reed and Sue are newlywed, and drive off in a limo with a sunroof. Reed waves to the camera as the limo recedes away from us. It looks like they took a six foot pole and mounted his tuxedo sleeve on it.

the Impossibles is a cool Hanna-Barbara cartoon featuring Multi-man, Coil-man and Fluid-man. thankfully it hasn't been ruined like Space Ghost (stupid talk show) or Birdman (stupid whatever it is).

I thought I read Mercedes McNab (Harmony on Buffy) was cast as Susan Storm as recently as when Angel was canceled. She seemed picture-perfect for the role. I loved Dark Angel, but ... no.
