In the Flamebait section, they could have added "be the Devil's Advocate," "bring taboo subjects into play," and.. this could have been a whole other enumerated item in itself: "Post as much and as often as possible to every article that you have time to do." Compare this to http://slashdot.org/moderation.shtml:
Post early:
If an article has over a certain number of posts on it already yours is less likely to be moderated. This is, less likely both statistically (there are more to choose from) and due to positioning (as a moderator I have to actually find your post waaay at the end of a long list.)

I must not be a 1337 anything because I can't even read it Well, maybe I am. You can be something without knowing how to read it. Take 'illiterate' as an obvious example (unless you are illiterate, then I don't know what to tell you and you wouldn't know what I told you anyway).
Back to the point -- I have been able to figure out what almost everything else means, but I think it's the 1 and the 7 that are throwing me off.

I can't read 31337 either for obvious reasons.

/. makes it go away entirely, thus leaving nothing to click on in the list. A tad annoying I'd say.
The subject of this message was supposed to be "(Score: -80,000)" without the quotes. But as you can see
Obviously it's looking for a (Score: xxx) type of thing at the end of the Subject line, but if there's nothing in front of that, it just leaves an empty subject.
Still, very funny.

For obvious light hearted trollbait stories like this, which I am not against at all, can you disable moderation, or not count moderation in these areas against posters? One wouldn't want to lose their karma points because they let their hair down here and their remark came across as flamebait instead of funny.
I'd just flag this kind of article as "un moderateable" so while people can moderate here, it won't count in general because of the nature of the story....

Uh-oh, now you've done it, you explained it to the masses.
Now 1337-5p34k is going to feel the slashdot affect. Too many people can read it, so time to accelerate the word morphing process. And there's nothing more dangerous (?) than having the entire h4X0r community irritated at you for explaining their language.

If you can't get the first post (there's lots of 1337 competition y'know), or come in a little too late, another way to get fairly visible to threaded viewers, is to reply, as offtopic as necessary, to the highest scoring post. Yes, there's a chance that that post could be moderated back down, or another be moderated above it, but all the 1337357 know that all the REAL moderation is done within the first 5 minutes or so.
I wish that this were not so true. I am as guilty of it as anyone else, but the moderators do not usually wait more than half an hour before the topic is "dead". If you don't read the article, make a brilliant post and generally get to the top of the view at the start, you get no karma. Even if a moderator does check the thing "later in the day", (s)he rarely seems to note anything below the top 20-30 articles, so your only prayer of really accumulating karma is to be an obsessive reloader who has on-topic, insightful and witty posts prepared for every possible article on the net.
I don't like it because I have a job that I try to do too...

If I have moderator access, I try and read from the bottom to move new unreconginzed stuff upward - perhaps if modereators had articles sorted by score ascending instead of descending. It would make your read a little rougher, but then it would also make you more interested in using the moderator points to get back to the standard view...

C'mon you know that for every post that ever gets on /. you must consider the implications of using that thing in a Beowulf cluster.
"Jesus saves, he shoots, he scores!" and its variants hardly strike me as blasphemy. Kind of old, and perhaps a bit disrespectful, but mildly amusing.
Frankly, I think most of the "Christian" Right is more blasphemous then that silly pun.
Or am I just feeding a troll?
Rob, you really need to do source snapshots much more often. Preferably, starting right now. Perhaps CVS access would be the best way to go. We've talked about this for ages now; Open-Source leads to security. I didn't think Slashdot was going to get burned, but it seems someone managed it.
This is an honest suggestion, Rob. I'm not condoning what these punks did, but at least it might prove the necessity of truly Open-Sourcing Slash.
Actually, modering you up should be unneeded, because the Moderator Guide clearly requests that moderators should browse at -1 to pick up really badly moderated posts. It's all more fun at -1, anyway.
Or, you can just use the "Newest First" option. And don't forget to use the -1 threshold.
To anyone that's interested, I've updated the article with a lot of your additions. I want to thank the individuals that took the time to think of things that annoyed them, and presented them forth so that I could plagiarize them. Don't feel bad. I'm only 19 and I also don't understand any of this nonsense. Case in point: I downloaded a theme. The actual background in the download has a bunch of C code (perhaps an exploit of some sort?) with the rendered letters "31337" in the foreground.
This troubled me. What was the significance of this number? There must be some meaning behind this number if someone was going to take the time to render it so nicely. Unfortunately, the only interesting thing I was able to find about 31337 is that it is a prime number, not a fibonacci or a marconi or anything else. I was rather disappointed.
Later, someone told me the significance of my desktop background. That wasn't exactly the image I was trying to portray.

This article was proved false by the fact that everyone who thought it would be funny to try its tricks were moderated down.
Call me old fashioned but where the hell did this "H4X0r'$" rubbish come from?
Bother.
Moderate this up!
This would make a kewl Beowulf Cluster if all of you ass-kissing, Karma Loving, Free BSD users would stop your GPL glorifying -- you sound like Jon Katz.
Wasn't this on Slashdot alreay like 3 months ago.
Just another example of Slashdot going down the tubes, especially since Bill OK'd that shipment of Who albums to Rob from the M$ FUD office.
Now keep those damn cookies away from me and Eric S., and that Karma crap too!
Hey if any of you h4X0r gir1i3z are reading this toss me a line at me@net.god, maybe later we can hook up on IRC and you can talk to my Bot, George.
Hey, you with the post above me.... you're momma uses a Packard Bell!

Alright,. I'm the first post!
Oh yeah, that article would have been so fuckin cool if it was served from a Beowulf cluster!
Of course, Jon Katz is so stupid, he wouldn't understand. Then again, I saw N47413 P0r7M4N using my FreeBSD machine. She was telling me about the Beowulf cluster she built. She named it "MICROSOFT SUX" because Bill Gates is the DEVIL!.
LINUX RULZ!! IT REALLY RULZ WHEN IT'S ON A Beowulf cluster!
(Ah crap, I was logged in AGAIN. I must fix that if I'm ever to become l33t)

As stated previously 1337 is elite. Back in the bbs (bulletin board system) days, elite was a kind of "trusted" access that would allow download of pirated software.
As a sidebar, I find it interesting that many of the "elite" people I know from those days (not the script kiddies who spell things like 1337) are now heavily into the opensource movement and claim that it was about free speech not free beer all along. I dunno...
In Indiana it is illegal to make a monkey smoke a cigarette.
Now how to chop off the trailing score?

Every expression is true, for a given value of 'true'
The following examples are all correctly inflected. Once you understand why, it all becomes easy.
- It's really a question of whom you're trying to make happy.
- It's really a question of who is happy.
- It's really a question of whom you've seen.
- It's really a question of who wants to go.
- It's really a question of who is going.
- It's really a question of who you think is going.
- It's really a question of whom you told to go.
- It's really a question of who you think I said was going.
- It's really a question of whom you think I told to go.
English is a context-sensitive language. You can't just look at these things in isolation. If you have a rational argument, and it isn't one of those topics that generate more heat than light, then posting a position different than that of most posters is informative. And, in my experience, it's also more likely than an equally-well written "me-too" variant to get some karma points.
/. discussions, seeing as how this isn't a religion site.)
I agree.. and I wrote what I wrote.. out of lack of better thought, actually, because what I was referring to is Flamebait and people who post comments on subjects that they, and we, know will merely start a comment war (i.e., when people post religious comments. I'm a Christian, and proud of it, and I'm sure that most people are proud of whatever beliefs they hold pertaining to religion, but religion is a topic that often sparks hot debate, and I figure it's a subject that's better left out of
But, thanks for the clarification.
Insert mind here.

wow...well. I'm just going to assume that you couldn't figure this out on your own...and I'm going to explain this calmly and slowly. If you want to view the source of any webpage, all you have to do is right-click on the webpage and then click on view source which will be a choice in the resulting list. If that still does not suit your fancy, you can log on anonymously to http://www.slashdot.org with your favorite ftp tool.
That reply displays your own ignorance and prejudice for all to see. I am glad that you have given me the oppurtunity to bring this up and maybe even start a discussion about it. I agree with the entire 'geek nation' that AOL bites it hard. But, it is not my choice to use that at home. I am 17 years old and I live at home and my father enjoys AOL for some ungodly reason. I wish I could convince him to change our ISP because we have access to a rather cheap cable connection. But, the point is that I can not and I am stuck using AOL. That does not limit my 'technical expertise' in any way. Using a certain ISP does not lower my intelligence.
As a fellow AOLer in an identical situation, I feel for you...
:)
However, your original post didn't speak very highly of your technical expertise.
If you want to view the source of any webpage, all you have to do is right-click on the webpage and then click on view source which will be a choice in the resulting list
Sure, that'll give you the HTML, but not the perl script that generated it.
If that still does not suit your fancy, you can log on anonymously to http://www.slashdot.org with your favorite ftp tool.
Wrong again. First of all, you don't FTP to an http:// URL, that's what ftp:// is for. Secondly, www.slashdot.org isn't running an FTP server, though you could telnet to port 80 of any of slashdot's IPs and GET / if you really felt like it...
It doesn't improve your image to insult people and then not know what you're talking about
