  1. The guy was a fool....... on Alabama IT Whistleblower Fired For Spyware · · Score: 1

For one thing, whistleblowers typically get the shaft after their deed. It goes with the territory - you blow the whistle, you lose your job. fact of life.

Installing spyware on ANYones computer is not ethical, I dont care what your intentions. You can get fired for this. Can your boss install spyware on your computer? If its work-related and you are informed, it maybe legal. Tough area to figure out.

What the heck was he doing trying to get shit on his boss? Not a good thing to do politically. Not a good career decision. If his supervisors lack of work was affecting his work, he might be able to go over the bosses head, but, again, not good in the long run.

The guy must have been frustrated to do this. If the job market was better, he could have moved out. But I'm sure he felt trapped and had to do something. Glad it wasnt me.

The last moon mission was early 70s. We have blown over 30years screwing around. Now, to go back to moon will costs a HUGE amount of cash. And Mars? Well, the money for Mars was sent to Iraq. Sorry!!!

During Vietnam, the government avoided a "guns or butter" choice. But things are differnet now. We are rapidly coming to a choice - we can either run the Iraq war and cut the crap outta every other project, or, fund the services that the people want/need and cut the $$$ to Iraq war. Wonder where the feds will get the funds for our next war - Iran.
Maybe we should cancel SocialSecurity/Medicare. Take the money and fund our wars. Yeah, that makes sense.

It had incredible value, we just didnt know it. Just imagine if we had stayed. What better place to practise going to Mars than from the moon. WE would have had a few poeple living there for months ( or year). We would know how to built and setup supply points for longer mission. We could practise for a few years, get the bugs outta the software, and then make a giant leap.

The ISS has sapped the energy and $$$ out of our space program. We have spent years watching fies mate or crystals grow. We should be developing the technology and science to go to some planet.
And dont get me started on the Shuttle. It has become the Yugo of the space program. It is our main space craft, built on 1960-1970 technology. It is failing apart and we cant afford to replace 'em.

So here we sit, watching the ISS circle the earth, and doing squat. The space program is dead, my firend! NASA just doesnt know it yet.

Yeah, we went to the moon. We had a decent space program. And it was underfunded because most of US budget went to cold-war and war in Vietnam.

We had several missions and then we pulled out. And our space program has not been the same since. When we dropped our moon program, we proved that we didnt go there for science or "just because its there". We went to beat the Ruskies and that was it. If the russians had mounted a serious moon program, you can bet your winning lottery ticket that things would have been different.

But when russians didnt follow us, we lost all desire to finish the program. We just gave up!

Pardon the review but its for those who are clueless about old IBM systems. Early days of MVS on an IBM 145. I was responsible for JES2 - the input/output system. All job processing starts and ends with JES2. It is just a job that runs all the time. Thing is - no JES2 system - no input/output processing. So, in my course of work I modified the task itself to reflect some new libraries. So we ran like this for a week or so. Like a lotta computers, data modified on disk is NOT reflected in the running system. I changed the JES2 JCL but the changes wont be reflected until an IPL or so.
We ran for over 2 weeks, great system. THis was a state government data center so we ran 24/7. Also, our backups covered about 2 weeks back ( you may see where this is going). One day, we take a hit and have to reboot MVS. But my JES2 changes had a JCL error ( ie typo). So JES2 wont come up. So system is dead. Just so happens we were in our AFDC ( welfare) cycle so we had to get our subsidy checks out quick. But system is kaput. No problem - we go to backup tapes. But our oldest backup also had job error. WE have no system. We miss our window on getting payroll/welfarechecks/ out to our finacial people to process. The data center manager starts getting phone calls from department heads about late processing. Soon, the governors office calls about a rumor of late welfare check processing. NOw its pucker time.
Fortunately we had an old SVS system pack lying around ( in an old store room). We got system back. Needless to say our backup system was changed, we modified our change control processes, I learned a hard-learned lesson - "There is no such thing as too many backups".

    1. If you are in a high-tech field, get a hobby that involves the arts. Photography, painting, sculpting. You dont have to be great. 30 years from now, when you burnout, your artistic talents will be the number 1 interest in your life. You'll thank me.

    2. Dont get married till after 30. The twenties are for partying.

    3. Plan on retiring around 55. Start looking at that age to leave the job market. Get a house paid off by then. Talk to smart financial people about this. You'll thank me.

    4. Manage your own career. Forget about job security, putting in your 30 years at a company. Make sure your current employer pays for career education. Masters degree may help. PhD may or may not help ( i know some PhDs outta work).

    5. Health. Do everything in moderation. Avoid drugs and booze. Especially if your relatives have problems in these areas. Exercise 4 days a week. Eat what you like. Dont diet or go off on some weird food binge. Eating is one of lifes great enjoyments. enjoy.

    6. Work on your enlightenment. Kinda goes with (1). Find a balance with the world. Especially people who piss you off or push your buttons. Learn to focus your anger to solve problems. You want to be a free-flowing human when you retire. As a recently passed-away coworker told me, "life is too important to be taken seriously".

What you should be striving to do is have all your energies come together when you retire. All the facets of your life should arrive in unison as you give up work. Then, you will really discover who you are. Its not work, your friends, or wives, or kids. Its not the money or cars, or PCs. Its arriving at a spot where your life can begin. 30 years of work is really a waste of a humans energy. We gotta do it but still. Remember, all paths to enlightenment lead to you. I know we are supposed to live in the now, but your need to plan. I didnt, I regret it. I f**cked up.

Of course all of this is for naught if you die an early death. A lot of that you cant control.
