AOL UK DSL does work without the AOL software, 1. install modem 2. create dialup connection using the device 3. dial vpi/vci number 4. use username in form of e-mail address 5. Connect
wow the hacking skillz involved are amazing to say the least, this method has worked for well over a year

Given Google and AOL seem to have a nice little relationship going on, whats to stop AOL allow Google to use its network or a modified AOLIM client? Would be alot of fun but then again competition laws may stop that.
In the end if Google do start a Im client GIM:P they'd blow MSN out of the water, after all 1GB GMail, IM and Search all under one using a very well known brand name thats also trusted by the majority of people on the net (compared to MS) Let the fun times role!:)
Agreed I want some examples here, Also its very obvious that you have not seen European News channels such as Euronews (euronews.net) I on the other hand have seen US news channels. Oh and most people don't count Sky News in the UK as a European view as its basically Fox News UK and is generally anti-eu in many respects

America had nothing to do with it so it did'ent happen:) Actually has anyone been to the space museum beside the meteor crater in Arizona? It lists everything about space except in leaves out one minor detail Russia never went to space apparently
ughh what a waste of film and DVD's and bandwidth by warez monkeys sharing it out on the net Still can't believe Morgan Freeman stared in it, I bet he's still trying to wash the filth off of himself.
Interesting, AOL UK gives McAfee Personal Firewall for free when you get DSL with them, dialup don't get it at all & both dialup and DSL customers can get McAfee Antivirus for 2.92 a month afaik
As for entire technical support devision based in India, I don't know how true this is in the US but in the UK its based in India, Canada, Ireland & UK
Tech knowledge does vary alot company to company and this applies to AOL also, hehe funnily enough I phoned my ISP looking for my DNS settings for my DSL line and it took the tech 10min to find them and he seemed VERY unsure about what he was giving me.

Well your talking a average of 70MB ram is use with AOL 9.0,
AOL Communicator is another matter:) I once compared it with Mozilla's mail client and it uses 3 times the RAM! It has less options then Mozilla's client but its still a step in the right direction.
Slowly AOL seems to be moving away from its client software, with aoldialers you can use dialup on mac & PC without the need to start the whole client which is a good thing. In the UK atleast you can use DSL without the AOL client at all either using a standard DUN connection or using a router, although support wise AOL UK will only support the router connection (fully support both Netgear & Speedtouch models).
All in all it could be a much worse service, I just wished this new Fanfair software (beta.aol.com) used the Gecko engine instead of MSIE's, oh well...
thanks man been looking mobile version of/. for ages (that actually updates)
As for WAP, I was in the UK visiting last March and bought myself a O2 sim card (pay as you go) and GPRS traffic was free, I basically used it every day to check my mail and read news as I had no other internet access at the time:(
Comparing that to Ireland where it costs 3c per kb which sucks big time
don't waste your time, if you watch it you'll wish you were dead, hmm the website did its job I guess...
