Electrical code, fire code, building code. No building (or even many home improvements) can be done without inspectors who ensure that the structure/project/improvement meets Code.
So, I believe your analogy only holds up if you are willing to allow for government inspectors to come in and inspect EVERY aspect of the code to ensure that it meets certain specifications.
A long time ago, a desktop operating system company wanted their platform to be recognized as one for high end CGI, so they bought Softimage. Anyone see parallels here?
Actually, this is cool for Apple, because years ago you could refute those who said Apple was the graphics platform by pointing out the lack of CGI and high end compositing software for the platform (Premiere isn't high end before someone says that), but it appears Apple is attempting to remedy it.
The real question is, how long after they force developers to poorly port things will they sell it to Avid?;)
Which is why an audited, reviewed escrow is essential for enterprise encryption. You want it reviewed by the noncomputer people, btw. That way, if it's misused, someone gets in trouble, but you avoid circumstances like this.
Somehow, this idea seems stupid, especially wrt their programmers. I certainly wouldnt put up with that environment. The last thing I need to see on a monday morning is a moniter...
Maybe it's time to put the keys back on the keyboard!
Technically, this type of law doesn't have to be supported on moral grounds. If the law simply states that each person has equal rights, then sexual assault can be made illegal without morality coming into it.
Ah, but that law is predicated on the moral issue of equality. The law of equality (in the US, the 14th Amendment) was, if you remember, hotly debated over many years and may have had something to do with the deadliest war the US has ever faced. Interestingly enough, the staunchest attackers on that peculiar institution were hard-core Christians. *gasp*
So, you are correct, the law regarding sexuality need not be based upon morals, but whatever law you choose is.
Uhm, what did my post say? I believe it said, put a small number in the lower corner of the screen. I think that would be tons less annoying than a ringing, yes. Or, have people w/o vibrating devices exchange for a vibrating device like restaurants do.
Doctors, for example, could leave their device with a cell check girl in a non-jammed area and get a tag. When the device rings/buzzes/jumps, they display the number in the lower-right hand corner of the screen. This isn't rocket science.
Btw, how often is a doctor called when off-duty? Sure, I can image drug interactions and high-risk pregnanant women needing their specific doctor, but in general?
I believe the points were 1) the form factor of the Ti4600 will fit in this (the voodoo 5 will not) 2) you can put any AGP card, including a really good one and 3) timothy likes to mention cool video cards
What I hate are broken forms -- are you sure your customers can download the software?
Here's a great example -- what is this stupid "confirm" thing and why does it not work right? (Not to mention asking for Male/Female -- probably so they can sell my address to pr0n spammers.) I put in all my info, it tells me I have to confirm, so I hit confirm and nothing happens. NOTHING! I hit register again, and it tells me I need to confirm. Often, there is no working link to let someone know the page is broken. Do I ever return?
I'm certain that you would have paid more to Microsoft if this deal were not in place.
Licensing is not a happy thing for universities. I work for one, and am charged with making sure every computer in my School has proper licensing. It's a horrible, horrible job. We could either plunk down $60-$200 per computer and maintain licenses individually, or we could be part of a larger deal (as we currently are) where we pay based the number of FTEs that we have. Guess which one costs you less in tuition dollars?
We have a similar plan in that students can use MS software on their machines as part of being a student here. To us, it's icing on the cake. We know that students don't really need this software often (but it does allow them to upgrade software at minimal costs), but it allows us to let the university function as well as provide students access to this software in public labs at a much lower cost, passing the savings along to the student.
If you would like to whine about how your university is charging you for services you don't need, there are better places to look (freshman english?). This deal is saving students money who never touch a computer.
Your page file must be larger than your physical RAM -- this isn't Win98.
NT likes to be able to put the entire physical RAM map onto disk, so yes, you will always get those errors. A colleague of mine did it to a W2k server with 1GB of RAM -- same error.
What I want is when I commit the change to a file, a trigger happens, and then that file is automatically sync'd to a backup database on a server as well as on my handheld.
Pop out to a command shell in WinXP and type ipv6 install
You'll be greeted with a message saying
Installing . ..
Then type
ipv6 if
to see your shiny, new IPv6 address. Microsoft states that the ftp and telnet clients are IPv6 enabled along with RPC and some other stuff.

So what are the letters USA worth?
(yes, usually that's upgrades, but it is a standing joke that things only break when we're here)
Or that same page in English (thanks to the gog) here

In fact, I'm not sure there's anything as lethal or punitive as time. I'm writing my congressman to start an investigation into time today!
Maybe it's time to put the keys back on the keyboard!
Heh, except for armed forces. ;) The US had something to say about that!

best, of course, includes being about as far away from their editors as possible. ;)

Uhm, no matter what you run, you can run vi within emacs....

Remember, the code name for MS's Novell->MS conversion util was visine b/c it "gets the red out."

What? Return things on time and I won't face this problem? Easy for you to say, but I'm all for technology that gets me around late fees.
I'm sure there may be a few embedded appliances using the M68K, but are there any major, somewhat everyday devices that still use it?
Speaking of which, what CPUs do they put in cars?
