How is this different than any of the recommendations made by Amazon or any other online retailer? The only real difference is that one tracks through your web browser, the other through your use of iTMS.

And calling it "malware" is extreme. I'm guessing the submitter meant spyware, as I don't see how this harms your computer.

Just imagine if you replaced your current kitchen trashcan with one that is twice as large. You might think "I'll never need this large of a trashcan!", but how much you want to bet that a week later it's just as full as the old one, and you're saving time by only having to go to the curb half as often. Granted, the new trashbags cost more, and it gets smelly, and strange things start growing in the trashcan that you can't readily identify, but how is that really any different from an always-on broadband connection?

Actually, proper typing isn't so hard if you just practice. I always thought it was horrible to try and get my fingers to move in such strange directions, but after taking a typing class in highschool, it became quite natural. I would actually compare it to playing classical, jazz or fingerstyle guitar. The first time you try to play some chords, it is so unnatural that it takes 30 seconds just to get all the right stings pressed/open/muted, but after playing that chord for a few weeks, you can form it instantly without thinking about it.

Let me get this straight. They're LIMITING the number of people that will take part in the STRESS TEST. Does this make sense? Wouldn't you want to test what ACTUAL demand would be like? I realize that you don't want to just dump a ton of users on your servers all at once, but this sounds like the load would never come close to real world levels.

It's not like this is anything new. I rememeber when I was a kid they had a movie tie-in promo at one of the chains where you got an episode of a story based on the Gremlins movie when you got a happy meal or something like that. I think they came on cassette tapes or something. I don't rememeber the details of the promo, but it came in like 4 or 5 parts if memory serves.

Now I feel really old. Having to reference promotional media that came on *cassette tapes*. It could be worse, though. Could be vinyl.

It sounds to me more like you're upset that you've become an adult. No offense, but my young relatives that see these kinds of movies have a suspension of disbelief that makes me remember the first time I saw Star Wars. I'm more apt to blame a lack of storytelling in modern film.

My last "scared for the characters" moment was Signs. Very little use of special effects, but a TON of suspense, and it kept me on edge the whole film.

  18. Re:Completely backwards on Digital Music Stock Market? · · Score: 1

Theoretically, that should mean that the songs could be free, except that the creation of the media has fixed up-front costs. That means that after a fixed amount of revenue is generated by a song, all additional revenue is going to be 100% profit.

Not to nitpick, but this isn't exactly true. There are many costs associated with a service like ITMS that you probably don't think about. Hosting, bandwidth, marketing, maintenance/labor, electronic security, lawyers, accountants, credit card processing fees, etc. Not to mention all the taxes that have to be paid just to be in business. Add in the costs that are unique to ITMS, like DRM R&D, iTunes development and so on. Frankly, I'm still surprised that pricing has remained at only 99 cents per song.

  21. Re:They meant "free" WiFi on New Orleans to Deploy Free Wi-Fi City Wide · · Score: 4, Insightful

Say what you want about "universal access to information", but government-funded free wifi isn't necessarily a good thing. Keep in mind that this could severely hurt ISP that were already devastated by the hurricane. If you can get wifi for free, then why pay for a service that is offered by company X? Having a bandwidth limitation seems to me a good solution, as people who can't afford access can still get it, but just not at the speeds they could if they paid for it. To take your library analogy to the next level, the library only lets you have n number of books at a time, and you have to return them. You have to pay a bookstore to have books at a "higher bandwidth", which in turn helps the economy.

Okay, call me naive, but who the hell leaves the country without their freakin' passport?!?!?! I'm assuming that there will be some sort of provision where if you're stuck outside the country w/o your possport, then you can get documents at the nearest embasy that will get you across the border, but WHO THE HELL LEAVES THE COUNTRY WITHOUT THEIR FREAKIN' PASSPORT?!?!?!?!?! I was dumbfounded when I came back from Mexico without needing to show a passport. They didn't even make me take my motorcycle helmet all the way off to cross the border (just flipped the visor up to show the guard I was white and I was on my way...). All they asked was if I had any fruit! If you ask me, our border could use a little tightening! If you're dumb enough to leave the country without your passport, then you deserve the headache of filling out paperwork at the embasy to get back. (yes, I realize that people do lose their passports or other circumstances could arise, but really, come on, WHAT THE HELL, THIS MAKES SENSE!!! NO PASSPORT, NO PASSING THE DAMN PORT OF ENTRY!!!).
