It's failry obvious that there is a security risk involving a Microsoft product, or any computing sytem for that matter, however since this only accounts for such a small amount of votes it would probablly not be attractive for anybody trying to cheat. However, the hype and controversy surrounding the system is probablly the largest security risk, regardless of it's OS dependency. The simple fact that everybody will be focusing their attention on this "New" and "Controversial" system of voting, will detract attention from other security holes in the voting system as a whole (including traditional paper ballots and what not) and could allow somebody to exploit those holes even moreso than before.

"I thought you'd like to know that I am a warrior, I am fighting for mankind's freedom. Freedom from this society,"

So they really didn't call themselves 'Warriors of Freedom' they just came to a rather dubious conclusion.

"In a sense, these guys probably were acting out a game," Thompson said.

I serioiusly doubt it. It is more obvious to me, from just readint he quotes from his letter, that the kid had some serious mental problems. Obviously, he was depresed or enraged or something. But I doubt that video games actually caused them to do that. Video games may have influenced some of the methodology of carrying out their plot (i.e. the swords), but I highly doubt it. However, I dont' think that the absence of video games would have changed anything. Bottom line, this was not a game for these kids. They were seriously disturbed and they all realized the gravity of their intended plot.

But this article did what it was intended to do, which was to smear video games publically. This is enough to get groups like MAVAV all fired up. Of course, what will really tell the truth about this incident and any connection to games that it may have will be told in court. If one of them comes out and says so, then I'm sure that we could begin to draw a resonable conclusion. However, I highly doubt it. The sad thing is, when the trial is over the report will be a little 6 line column on the last page of the paper, so that the real motivations behind this crime will never be known. The general public is just left pointing a finger at games/music/tv.

Did you stop to think that every once in a while telemarketers and mail soliticters actually offer a good deal on a product or service. We got called from the phone company, and cut our DSL cost by $10.00, for the exact same service package.

As far as the elderly population goes, I think that they simply have the tendancy to listen more often to a caller while, mostly everybody else just hangs up right away. Once they hear the sales pitch then they're hooked, not because they're slow old folks or anything like that, but just because the sales pitches are actually that effective. Humor me for a second, and actually pretend to be interested in what a telemarketer has to say next time one calls, then throw all your objections at him/her, and see how hard it is to say "no." Oh well, flame me if you must, but it's just food for thought.

Advertizing techniques are only around as long as they sell.

However, I do agree that telemarketers have a shitty job, usually they're high-pressure positions with high quotas and a high turnover rates.

This argument is a myth, and has been used by Microsofties to try and downplay the vastly superior security of both *BSD and GNU/Linux. Mac OS X is a FreeBSD derivative in many respects, and vastly better designed from the ground up than Microsoft windows, for whom things like networking and security were afterthoughts cobbled together in an ad-hoc frenzy of featuritis and catch-up. Such an ad-hoc approach to design will never yield acceptable security, as Microsoft's shoddy products have demonstrated so dramatically in recent years, time and time again...and once again today, with this irritating worm.

However, people writing worms or viruses are looking to infect those most likely to spread it. In other words, your grandmother who barely knows how to turn on the computer. People like that don't use *nix.

If those servers host other sites, e.g. they're part of a large hosting network or something, who's responsible for those who may have lost money because of a trivial mistake on somebody else's part?

However, in my opinion, I think that Hatch should fork over the $900 (and then some) to pay for that software. I would not consider his website personal or nonprofit considering that he uses it to promote his own political career.

  25. Why? on AMD: No Grease For You! · · Score: 1

Why the hell are they doing this when the heatsinks they ship with Athlons are pieces of crap. I bought an Athlon and used the stock heatsink for about a month. Mind you, I didn't even overclock it and, according to the internal temperature sensors, it was running it at about 65-70 degrees (celsius)! The heat alarm would start to go off every time I'd play Warcraft III. I went to the computer store, and bought the cheapest heatsink/fan there, slapped it on there and it runs at least HALF of that.

However, on a lighter note, I don't see why the thermal pads (or whatever comes stuck to the AMD heatsinks) are any better. I could be wrong (and I most likely am), but I was under the impression that thermal grease, even cheap thermal grease, is better than the pads they put on those things.
