TIGER address is what suppose to be not what it's actually is once the local government gets done with an area. A better funded TIGER would go greatly into pushing innovation in this space. GIS data is being silo into competing camps: NavTEQ (German automakers), TeleAtlas (TomTom), Google, and Apple.

I agree with your assessment of Snapchat. We're too old to understand it. Best I can do this conversation with my niece (13 y/o).

me: can't you do the same thing with Facebook Messenger or any of the other chatting programs? I mean some of these "cool" features have been since ICQ and AIM.
niece: I-see what? You're a dinosaur like my mom, you still have a Facebook account.
me: you don't have a Facebook account? But you have an Instagram account that's own by Facebook
niece: yeah, but I only use the Instagram to read the stupid things people do like this "guacamole lady". I never post anything on Instagram.
me: so you use Snapchat because it's not Facebook?
niece: kinda, but mostly because the stupid things I say and do probably won't come back to haunt me when I use Snapchat. Messages disappear. And aren't you the one telling me to scrub my online present and watch for my privacy.
    me: (teary eye..she actually listened)
niece: I have a school fundraiser
me: damn it, here's a $20 get some chocolate for yourself

TL:DR version: people use Snapchat because messages disappear, network effect and it's not Facebook.

"You're a dinosaur, you and my mom still have a Facebook account." I don't really know what to say. Do kids view Facebook as something for their parents so it doesn't matter what features are added they're not going to use any Facebook service? I have no clue because I don't "get" the appeal of Snapchat. The interface and functionality seems so disjointed. I was driving her and her friend when some boys in another car rolled down their windows and asked the girls for their Snapchat name. So many I'll buy some Snap stock when they IPO because all the kids are using it.

Wait, I would say MSFT had a decent mobile OS (relatively) from 2001-2007. I remember at the first iPhone (iOS 1), WM2005 had far more functionality (etc. GPS, apps, handwriting support). WM was better than PalmOS because I moved from the Palm m505 over to the HP iPaq 1910 and then to the GPS iPaq smartphone (don't remember the model number). iPhone didn't get gps support until the iPhone 3G.

So MSFT only screwed up the last 10 years of mobile development. It's the tortoise and hare problem. MSFT exceeded features and crushed the existing competitions (Palm, Netscape, Lotus, WordPerfect) and then sat around getting pass by new competitions (iOS, Android, Chrome).

I don't think the relatives would try sideloading an app on someone else's TV. But can't rule it out.
