They want to be "different". They want to be "Different" so they can be "cool", but you can only be "cool" if the thing that makes your "different" is better than other people's thing which makes them "different".
Everyone wants something in return. The churches runnig shelters want converts, this particular group of free-timers wants to fight globalization. I prefer to give directly to the poor, in the form of dollars for forties.
Pardon the spelling. I just started Grad school at the university of new haven. As I walked to the 50's building that my class is in, there was a door on the back that said AT&T "Long Line"...I wondered what that meant. And here is Slashdot telling me about it. Wish that website was up so I could find out if that building is really next to one of these things.

You claim that the manipulation of the population of the US has become much more profound in the last 25 years. I think you are being a bit short sighted. You speak of Mass Media manipulating people...but people have been manipulated for eternity. Does being told what to buy and believe become more acceptable when it's the rest of your town/neighborhood doing the telling, rather than a corporation? Your complaints about corrupt polititions being re-elected is also an on-going theme in human government.
In short, nothing has changed except your perception. Do you truely think that Maw and Paw Kettle out in Bumfuck, ID knew about political scandles back in the 1800's? Of course not, all they knew about washington was reported in a newspaper. A newspaper that 'played nice' with the politicos. Things seem worse because you can see all the bad events, but trust me, this stuff has been going on forever. Do you really think the industrial magnates of the first half of the 20th century were 100% pure? Yeah right! When you own all the steel in the country, you do what you want.
Don't throw out the TV...maybe turn off the cable. Just remember that it's all entertainment. Even the 'news', and especially CSPAN!
Why not release such a device with the same VCR-style interface everyone is used to? I know what channel the simpsons are on! Hell, my parents have a TV that grabs program info off of the cable itself!
are you gonna pull the latest MYSQL code from CVS and take a few minutes to find the off-by-one error which allowed the illegal-but-still-kicking Nazi party to swing the election? Please.
Not true on both counts. Buying a car that is a year or two old lets you bypass the most painfull depreciation. It also lets you pick a model that will break less than the average vehicle. This lets you buy a nice (not base) car that will last 5-8 years at the least, with acceptable maintenance.
Of course, there are always better and faster models coming out. If you desire to always have the best, then you should look at resale.

It's a fucking computer, why battle over it?
So, really, who cares?

...cause I went in here to make the same post.

If you had 1/2 a clue about the difference between the two, it would make perfect sense.
What about that giant fucking cloud over India?!

you're reaching, but your sig is good enough for me!
Um, genius, the hyperbole is equally applied to BOTH parties.
In the USA it's the evil corporate giants, in Western Eurpoe it's the fascist government. :)
Did I get that right?
Pay a few bucks more for a case and you'll get a nice wire to plug into the "CI" block on the motherboard.
Did you know I've built my own car?
Right on the money. How'd this waste of bits sneak through? Doesn't he know that all the VC has dried up?
Dude, you gotta get the party chairman's hand out of your butt. To steal a phrase, that 'rebuttal' you posted was 'Not Even Wrong.'

Or are you speaking from your ass?
My 15k SCSI drive is load as hell, but seems faster...or maybe I'm deluding myself because of the noise and cost.

I really gotta get one of these shredders. What's with the assumption that Oracle and MS are the only choices for database systems?!
Concern about resale value usually means you cannot really afford whatever it is you are buying.
People seem to forget Web Services != SOAP, and SOAP can run on any transport anyway...
We don't need gramma mistaking the accelerator for the brake and sending the robot through the Retirement Castle wall.
SOAP is not tied to HTTP, just most of the examples are.
I want graphic violence. I want to see orcs torn asunder!
