I have US AT&T GSM service. Recently I got the itch to buy a new gadget and ended up buying the Sony Ericsson T300. Since AT&T does not officially carry this phone, I had to buy it from T-Mobile and then get it unlocked to use with my AT&T sim card. I have to say, the internal antenna on that thing is great. Tons better than the Nokia 3590 brick that got replaced.

I'm looking for an Xbox mod that allows me to playback my content stored on ANOTHER computer through the network (the 10GB HDD on the thing would never be enough to store my files),
The current incarnation of XboxMediaPlayer has support for a remote streaming server called ReLaX. I use the win32 client on my PC downstairs, and stream mp3s, oggs, divx, etc. over wireless to my xbox upstairs. It works great. Also, the next rev of XBMP is supposed to include samba support.
and still be able to play my original, legally owned games in a non-intrusive way. Simplicity and ease-of-use are valued above all else in a console.
Although many people play XboxLive games on modded consoles (it involves disabling the mod chip thru a switch or some other method, and locking the hard drive, both very simple processes that basically reverts the Xbox back to a "pristine" unmodded state), you still have to initially mod the console to be able to use XBMP, which is of course an intrusive process.
I've seen a lot of threads that say an application like this would be great for security cameras and the like.
Assuming this is even implementable (which it is not), lets look at a cost breakdown:
16 video capture cards - $100 x 16 16 120 gig hard drives - $120 x 16 4 cheap cases - $50 x 4 4 mb/proc/mem combos - $240 x 4 1 dvd burner - $200 x 1 other odds and ends - $100 which comes out to a grand total of approximately, oh, $5000
Now lets look at my solution: 16 VCR's purchased from circuit city- $50 x 16 one guy to switch tapes every six hours- $6.50/hr
In the gulf war, we launced tomahawks (that flew through Iranian airspace! but that's a whole other topic) that were equipped with warhead that delivered a payload of very fine metallic strands. These strands would float down and short out power lines, transformers, etc. thereby killing Iraq's power infrastructure. Very effective stuffs, with extremely minimal casualties.
Nice try, but Sony sells an add-on hd/keyboard/mouse combo for the PS2 and even packs in their own little distro.
Also, what makes you say the console market is stagnant? Sony sells exactly 18 bazillion gillion consoles a year, and Nintendo/MS are neck and neck for that second place spot. If anything, more consoles will fracture the gaming market in a bad way (see: atari 2600 vs colecovision vs intellivision vs some crappy fairchild box vs etc etc)
I've read a couple comments asking why PCI-SIG is so mean and why don't they just give him permission to use their logos, etc. If you look at the letter:
Your use of PCI-SIG's trademarked name and logo on your website is likely to cause consumer confusion on the marketplace as to the sponsorhip, affiliation or endorsement of the website by PCI-SIG.
Essentially, they dont endorse the page because then it becomes an issue of support and accountablilty. If Joe Coder writes a device driver using Device ID X, Vendor ID Y, which happen to be incorrectly listed on this list with PCI-SIG's name all over it, they become accountable when it causes Joe's PC to not detect the device. And then they have to field support issues from Joe, who's first thought may be to contact PCI-SIG, because heck, their name is on the page.
Of course, if you had actually taken the time to read the letter, you'd see that PCI-SIG is a not-for-profit corporation, and that they want to work amicably to move the list onto the PCI-SIG website. I don't see what's wrong with this, nobody objects to IBM's right to trademark "IBM".
I remember playing Prince of Persia back in the day on my green monochrome, system speaker sound, POS computer. It was a ton of fun. Then I went over to my cousin's house, who had a screaming fast 286 with EGA and an original 8-bit soundblaster, and you know what? It made Prince of Persia A LOT MORE FUN.
If you want to get your TV perfectly calibrated, hire a professional. Second best thing to do is pick up Avia's Video Essentials. I would definitely take this "guide" with a grain of salt. They gloss over one of the most important issues of video calibration, which is that you have to calibrate it with the amount of ambient light that would normally be present with normal usage.
Also, they could HEAR the difference between two different TOSLINK cables? Gimme a break. Sounds like a sponsored ad for Monster cable, whom audiophiles know is a rip-off anyways.
Last week's paper version of EETimes had an article about the fact that 60% of EE/CompE/CS undergrads in the US today either flunk out or quit, which is a large reason that many companies are "outsourcing" to engineers coming from different countries these days. This is obviously a Catch-22 type situation, because within a university, the engineering college gets less of the yearly budget/alumni funds due to less engineering graduates, which possibly could have the effect of causing prospective college students to not want to attend that engineering college.
If you had actually read the press release, you'd see that Clawhammer will still bear the name Athlon, while Sledgehammer is debuting with the Opteron moniker.
The title says "James Doohan not in a coma and likely to survive" and the story goes on to talk about how Scotty is in a coma and probably wont make it. What's going on here?
I suspect you mean "Through the Looking Glass." But hey: Carroll, Disney, what's the diff?
Anyways, the Time article was referring to Snow White, not Through the Looking Glass. Apparently you have either never seen The Matrix and/or read Snow White.
This is hilarious, because I've had a Philips DVD711 for about the past year and a half. For about the past year and four months, it's been region/code free, done completely without ever even opening up the dang thing.
Check out this site to see how you can make your Philips DVD player region free.
Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin show some promise. Also, the Gamecube is $100 cheaper than PS2 or XBox, not like anybody who reads/. doesent already know that.
All this is is winamp on some cheap but shiny looking box. You can accomplish the same thing (albeit without as pretty of a box) for 1/3 the cost using the 3com Audrey. $89.99 from tigerdirect, as opposed to $289 for the Audiotron.

Seriously though, this makes me want to get back to the good ol' days of making cool projects for EE classes.
Manhwa Bang = Comic Book Room (rent and take home, or read them on site)
I spent many a happy hour in Manhwa Bangs, but again, something that probably wouldn't catch on too well in the US.

It's coded on a linux platform. I'm sure they're using some kind of custom RTOS, which would be much more suitable for this kind of task.
Tivo rarely exhibits any slowdown
You ever try to reorganize 34 season passes? It takes about 10 minutes.

I find it interesting that /.ers see Microsoft as an evil corporation (for obvious reasons) and Wal-Mart as a champion of the people because they are selling Lindows boxes, even though Wal-Mart shamelessly exploits Maquiladora sweatshop labor, lies about it's products being made in the USA, and forces artists to censor their music, among other things.
At least the people Microsoft empoly get paid well.

That would be pretty tough. I noticed with my speedpass that it needs to be a couple centimeters from the sensor for at least a couple seconds.

This also wipes out any chances of seeing home brewed software on the Playstation 2 anytime soon, as well.
PS1 has the largest installed userbase of any console in the world, besides game boy.
Mod chips for the PS1 cost almost nothing, are widely available, and are installed in many units.
The Yaroze was released in the US by Sony- essentially a PS1SDK.
There are countless emulators for the PS1, allowing you to play burned and/or copied software on your computer
Despite all this, I don't think I've ever seen a homebrew PS1 game, ever. Has anyone else?
