Um, you have heard of this company "IBM", right? They are HUGE. GIGANTIC. With many divisions. Just because they have Linux servers doesn't mean Betty in HR is using it.
... It doesn't exist, and neither does your idea...
Contrary to popular belief, if someone has an idea that you don't like, it still exists, even if you don't want it to.
On slashdot... few really know nothing about business at all.
What are you trying to say here? That most on slashdot know something about business? Given the tone of the rest of your post, that doesn't sound like what you are trying to say.
Everything around you exists because someone made money by producing it
Okay, I get it now. I've always wondered why there's air and trees and stuff.
If it doesn't make money (or convince someone with a lot of money that it will), you aren't going to see it on the market, period. If you think this isn't the case, stick your nuts out there and try to break the trend. You'll fail, I promise.
I heard about this guy named Linus Torvalds. He wrote this thing called an "operating system" for computers because he thought it would be fun. And hey, he made money (along with thousands of other people) and that wasn't even his original plan! Holy crap!
P.S. Demand for my nuts is so high, I think I will be sticking them out there into the market soon.
I mean, do they REALLY think they're going to stop this now that the genie is out of the bottle?
Of COURSE not! This is just another arena where the working class can be held down. The more people sentenced under stupid felony laws like this, the less that will be hired into important positions, the less that will have money to legally defend themselves, etc. . This way, the rich stay on top.
A lot of the current changelog size has to do with the adding of "SIGNED OFF BY: " lines, where the patch in question is signed by the original guy, then by the subsystem maintainer, all the way up. It was done to be able to track where code comes from better, in order to deter legal fiaSCOs.
Word using Interwoven Desksite Content Management System. Call me when an Open Source CMS can intercept OpenOffice File-Save and File-Open to present a metadata profile dialog or folder structure that assigns metadata based on the folder in which the document is stored. No frickin uploads.
I really don't think it would be that hard to build a custom version of OO.o with a File->Save-to-CMS button and some code/scripts to handle that stuff. Sorry to hear about the non-standards-compliant web interface, tho...
You forget to mention that the people who put those flags and ribbons on their cars are those most likely to not think for themselves. They support our beloved guv'mint out of some ridiculous idea of patriotism, one that means "support our leaders, no matter what".
So if i put up my legally owned movies onto a tracker, they can't touch me. This is assuming i can get them into digital format without breaking the sacred CSS and the holy DMCA.
Because, you know, in places like North Dakota, there's no excess space anywhere. And you definitely can't put crops in the same field. No way in hell.
I've lurked around emulation boards for years, and no matter how intelligent the regular people are, idiots inevitably show up looking to complete their OMG ROM COLLECTION.
These kinds of jobs give kids a perspective about what "real" work is.
I have to agree here. After working in a gas station during high school, I realized that I don't want to be working in a job like that for the rest of my life.
The more I think about it, OSS programmers aren't pioneering a radically different way of doing business. When I get the oil changed in my car, I know what's being done, it's just that I don't want to mess with my car and possibly screw something up, so I take it to a professional I can trust. With open source software, you can check out what the program does, and then hire the professional to make it work in your system/situation.
A couple of years ago in my high school TV Production class, we used imovie on some old blue-box G3 macs. The results that we got were pretty good, and this is definitely a good thing when technology allows an average person to be able to creatively express themselves in the best way possible.

In other news, Goliath unworried about David.
WTF??? This was supposed to be FUNNY, slashbots. If you think the 6502 can decode MP3, the exit is on your left.
Argh, where to start....

You can barely get a Dell PC with no OS for less than $500,
Really?

As of now, they are back up...
says your still ill.
His "still ill" what?

From TFSummary:
...At this point, I'm gathering input for what we could improve on...
/. do we get people WHO MODERATE WITHOUT READING THE ARTICLE SUMMARY.
Only on

Nowhere in the GP's post does it state that that site is "p2p".
I'm sure this has nothing to do with Sega's ... ESPN football debuting this year...
Sega's football series did not debut this year, it has been around since NFL2K (1999 or 2000, I forget).
This is a typical /. knee-jerk reaction thread, so I'll attempt to point out the other (good) side to this, karma be damned:
-News clips.
-Short video clips.
yes, someone WILL think of a good way to use this service.
disclaimer: I don't necessarily think this is a great idea.

Here's some history on Xenogears, which actually began production in 1987.
OMG SERIOUSLY. ;D
