Actually very good advice (if completely off topic)
I was (and still am) a windows power user who was going up the very steep learning curve of learning Linux some 5/6 years ago. I could do "some" stuff with it, but it wasn't until my main PC died and I was left with my Linux laptop for a couple of weeks that I all of a sudden Just-Got-It tm
These days all operating systems are all pretty much the same as far as I am concerned, XP is a great desktop, Linux is a great server, Sun is a great number cruncher and I still miss CP/M:)
Both your points are very insightful IMHO (altohugh possibly a little psychotic)
As a fellow leftie, I have also found that the tech arena has a disproportionate number of left handed people.
Likewise, there is a sub-conscious feeling the world over againsed left-handedness. However, instead of it being a specific discrimination, I think it instead shows human nature to discriminate the minority
Yup, because they'll be the ones who get fscked over all this.
Despite popular opinion, I really dislike IBM hardware. I've had to sit back and watch dozens of their shoddy server motherboards give up the ghost in a space of a few months.
One thing that IBM do have which will sweeten the deal for Apple is their R&D
Although the parent AC is obviously trolling, its not a bad point.
How are Moz going to profit from this; not through advertisments (users wont bother if its just another adware, marketers dont particularly like Firefox), people wont pay for "another" browser on their wintel boxes, I doubt they could go the "support contract" route RedHat et al have gone down.
At the end of the day, IE is pre-installed and free. Moz just can not make any money with their current business model.
Having said that, I am typing this from Firefox 1.0... but I sure as hell didn't pay for it

Quite late in the thread, so this probably wont get read, but this was the flying car argument I had the other night.
The "flying car " (moller, honda et al) should not be seen as a replacement for a car. The driving/ piloting restrictions will (and should) be very stringent. Not as hard to get as a commercial flying license, but harder than a driving test.
This creates a new niche market for corporates to have a fleet of cars & pilots where it will be cheaper than flying its execs all over the country, where we can get flying taxis, or the well to do will have a chauffer who can both drive their limo, or fly their moller.
Car companies will not be the ones effected, but instead the short haul flights business will see a dramatic drop in sales; if anything these companies should invest in flying taxis, the planes will become flying coaches instead
Google became a great company by sticking to its business plan; back linked search rankings with a simple interface.
Then came GIS, which still focuses on the main business, then came the toolbar which starts encroaching on the PC/ browser, then came IRC search... can you see where I'm heading
Which other company can we think of who add more and more functionality to an existing product... as long as this doesnt effect Googles core business, no problem, but this is very rarely the case.
Will we even recognise Google in 5 years time (or less)
I was listening to BBC Radio 4 (Today program) and they sent a group of climateologists/ meteoroligists/ etc to a preview of the film.
the great quote was "the film makers left the laws of science on the cutting room floor"
However, it just goes to show; make a movie about a meteor hitting earth and we spend billions on searching for NEO's (near earth objects), make a movie about climate change and all of a sudden we are at risk from "Abrupt Climate Change". The planets lasted this long already, I personally am not too concerned.
However, I do think they should make a movie about how all geeks get laid daily!

Outlook Web Access (a web front-end for MS Exhange server) in Exchange 2003 is a true web based app. There is very little difference at all between Outlook 2003 and the OWA front end.
It seems that MS are moving slowly on this one (which is probably a good idea) and only releasing web based office products 1) when they actually work & 2) when they can sell a server OS and client licenses with it
I have to do a lot of travelling for work, I have used WiFi hotspots almost everywhere I needed it, but whenI have used my laptop on trains before using GPRS, and I think this is a great move and a step in the right direction.
However, the one area where this always falls over is with power. Our batteries are just don't last long enough. I have a brand new Dell D600 (finally gave up on my Thinkpad T21) and the battery will give me 1 - 1.5 hours max.
As long as the trains also offer power outlets so I can keep the charge going I'd happily pay for the connectivity

I kinda like that idea, however, as opposed to the system "cleaning up", a nice feature would be to inverse the reults, so you can see which items you wouldnt mind having cleared up, so you are safe in the knowledge that ls wouldnt disappear, but you could see, for example, software you installed to test but forgot about before you got around to uninstalling. I install a LOT of software and forget to uninstall so this is something I've thought about before.

Turbolinux To Ship with HP Commercial Desktop PC Systems
New systems will be sold in 12 Asian countries, including Korea, Japan and the People's Republic of China
TOKYO, Japan - March 16, 2004 - Turbolinux, a global provider of Linux solutions, today announced the Turbolinux operating system will be distributed on HP Compaq business desktop PCs in 12 countries throughout Asia.
"The adoption of Linux on the desktop across Asia is booming," said Koichi Yano, president and COO of Turbolinux, Inc. "We're pleased to partner with HP to give customers an integrated desktop solution tailored to meet business requirements in many different markets."
Turbolinux will also provide HP customers with OpenOffice.org 1.1, the integrated open source application suite that offers desktop productivity software with similar functionality and the look and feel of Microsoft's Office product. Customers can easily exchange files created and edited in OpenOffice with Microsoft Office.
"HP offers a portfolio of Linux solutions on industry-standard hardware and software to enhance customer productivity," said Tad Bodeman, director of software product marketing, Personal Systems Group at HP. "HP's offering of Turbolinux in Asia demonstrates our commitment to serving our customers' needs around the globe."
The Turbolinux OEM software bundle is built around Turbolinux 10 Desktop (10D), one of the first distributions to ship with the new Linux 2.6 kernel. It is designed to capture the intuitive look and feel of popular desktop user interfaces, including those for viewing and sharing local files and browsing networks.
In addition, 10D offers applications for advanced technologies such as 802.11b, FireWire, CD-ROM burning, Bluetooth and digital camera image loading software. Customers can easily update the desktop software with the latest Linux kernel, packages and security patches - usually without a system reboot - by using a graphical update tool.
"Today's announcement by HP and Turbolinux is the latest demonstration that businesses around the world are accelerating their adoption of Linux," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a non-profit global consortium of IT vendors and customers dedicated to advancing Linux in the enterprise. "We're pleased to see global companies such as HP and Turbolinux working together to deliver business Linux solutions to customers in the fast-growing IT markets in Asia."
Today's announcement builds on recent news that Turbolinux will offer Linux on HP systems in the People's Republic of China. The new agreement adds 11 new countries, including Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Turbolinux will provide technical support to HP's engineers to assist in resolving any complex support issues. Turbolinux and HP have pre-certified all hardware to be shipped under the OEM agreement for Linux compatibility and smooth operation. In addition, customers can download from the Turbolinux Web site all GPL source code shipped with the HP Compaq business desktop PCs.
I once bought an original Pole Position II arcade off ebay (about 120). After a few months the screen went a bit screwy, so i found a newsgroup concerning acade repair.
The people on the group were really helpful and were talking me through fixing the problem... however I kept the arcade plugged in so I could see the results. FZZZZZZPT! I get knocked about 5 foot, manage to crawl to my laptop and type very slowly "brb, ambulance"
