You must be talking about throttles. You can rarely buy them on their own; most of the time they come as part of a HOTAS (Hands-On Throttle And Stick) system, which consist of a joystick, and well, a throttle :P, and is derived from the actual type of setup used in modern figher jets and is designed to not make the pilots need to look away from the sky or take their hands off the flight controls in order to perform the tasks they need to perform in the heat of battle.

HOTAS systems you can buy vary very widely in price. You can opt for the budget-conscious ($80) Saitek X-45 to the $300 Thrustmaster Cougar that is an exac replica of the throttle and stick found in the real-world Block 52 F-16C.

You forgot to mention the other major game category that will just never be able to succeed in a console environment: Simulations (the paradigms being Papyrus' racing games on the driving side of things, and Falcon 4 on the combat flight sim side) Just you try making a high-caliber sim that is playable without a an appropriate specilized controller, let alone without a keyboard for the 6 letter-size pages of very fine print of commands that come with Falcon 4 SP3.

  17. Simulated sword fighting on Virtual Sword Fighting · · Score: 1, Informative
For a much less crude, albeit less geeky, sword fighting "simulation," check out the SCA. It's a nation-wide organization that reenacts all aspects of Medieaval life... from armed combat, to chivalrous ceremonies, to arts, crafts, and cooking.... but mostly combat . People craft their own custom armor and costumes and make all sorts of weapons from rattan (the stuff those chairs are made of) wrapped with duct tape. Combat ranges from one-on-one bracketed tournaments, to full-scale open field battle consisting of hundreds of warriors in rank and formation under multiple subdivions of field command, complete with mock castles, and authentic battle formations (shield/swordsmen in the front, pikemen and spearmen behind them, archers in the back, etc), and siege engines! Nothing is scripted - all combat is as if it were really happening -- except the death. "Deaths" in combat are much like paintball -- if you're hit, you're out... more or less honor system. If you're hit in an arm or leg, you lose control of that limb. Loks like a whole ton of fun.

You can check out some of my favorite pictures of stuff going on here.

  18. Preparing for such a cataclysm on A Rock Moves In Space · · Score: 1

If the collision course was indeed confirmed to intersect Earth at the right time, and it would be likely that entire civilizations could be wiped out, the best way to "save humanity" would be to start OCRing every text describing our history, and backing up copies across all corners of the globe. If you think about it, what else is more worth saving? What else more strongly defines us as human race that we are? Without it, we are nothing but a bunch of walking, talking, intelligent hairless apes. Five thousand years of wars, philosophies, arts, and sciences are what we think of when we think of the human race.

In order to do any kind of "restoration" of who we are after a cataclysmic event, we'd need as much of our recorded history as possible -- the writings of Plato, Aristotle, all the rest of the great thinkers, and of all of the events that have shaped our world -- dating back to that of the Sumerian civilization who first wrote down what we know about them 4-5 millenia ago.

We should start this right now, to whatever degree feasible... just in case, so we're ready for any unforseen event that happens.
