    HP has been shipping computers with complete restore info on the HD for about a 1 or 1 & 1/2 years now. If you want CDs, you have to request them on their site, by mail, or phone.

    If the drive dies, they send you a new drive with all the OS info pre-loaded....the average user doesn't even realize that they are using space...

    the people they are cutting off are sending out daily attacks to multiple machines, not just once or twice sending out crap here and there. i think you'll be ok.

    teach them how to use the programs on there....and why you need it, what it does, etc.

    i have my mom using firefox, spybot s&d and adaware

    she runs all the updates and uses the spyware removers....she hasn't yet had a virus.

    i tought her what to look for in emails and whatnot.

    then she tought my dad. phone calls from them with computer troubles are few and far between.

    time spent educating them is time well spent. you have the knowledge, so you may as well share it.

    most people carry cell phone's on their person.

    plus, i think that in emergency situations, land lines/cell phones tend to be a lot more accesible than a computer (hello...pay phone...makes free calls to 911)
