A major complaint the articles raises is that storing objects in SQL databases or as XML requires storing objects in a non object oriented fashion (which breaks encapsulation).
This technology relies on object serialization. In Java at least only objects consisting entirely of base types (integers, strings, etc.) can be serialized without writing additional code. This code is analogous to the code required to store an object in a database or an XML file.
Small and light makes it easy to move with. A 12" screen is big enough to do my work on.
When i want a bigger screen, a regular keyboard, and a mouse, I dock it with my USB Mouse & USB Keyboard set up at a desk. Lo and behold, a desktop with a full sized monitor.
This is on my baby ibook, it works just fine, I do all my work on it. I love it.
A number of people are giving babylon 5 and farscape as examples of good sci fi, in their critisism of why Nemisis was a box office failure.
Since neither of these serieses achieved financial success, this seems like a bad comparision. While they may be good science fiction, and Nemisis may have been bad, there doesn't seem to be evidence that Bab-style or Farscape-style writing would make for a profitable Star Trek movie.
The new 12" Powerbook is a great competitor to the 12" Ibook! Lets review some major points of comparison between the new powerbook and the 12" ibook.
Ibook:
Processor: 800 mhz G3
Memory: 128 mb
Hard Disk: 30 gig
Price: $1299
Powerbook:
Processor: 867 mhz G4
Memory: 256 mb
Hard Disk: 40 gig
Price: $1799
The powerbook also has a better graphics card
and bluetooth. For an extra $200 you can add a DVD burner.
This new powerbook really closes the gap between ibook and powerbook users. It's the most affordable G4 notebook to come from apple, and the most affordable DVD burning notebook as well. I'll stick with my ibook, but this is an impressive amount of additional value for not much additional cash.
Charging for upgrades is not going to make apple users happy, but it will work.
The important thing is when you buy your mac, you will get all these apps for free at the current version. Most people won't choose to buy a non-mac because they won't get free software upgrades in the future.
When upgrades come out, well, you're already an established mac user.
I wish that Apple would continue to allow free upgrades for shipped-with-the-mac software. It would be a nice gesture on their part, but they can probably get away with it.
This is great news, Star Con 2 is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. The 1 on 1 space combat is just exceptional.
I hope the team that is doing this will eventually put in some kind of TCP/IP based network play, because that would just be super fun.
Because of the (presumedly) low system requirements, this will make a great 'light' game to play on your system. Something you can run for 15 minutes just for some fun during a break.

The PS2 service is free, and games companies provide and manage their own servers.
The XBox service is (probably ) $10/month after your free year runs out. Microsoft runs and maintains all the servers.
All XBox titles need to confirm to Microsoft's standards, including support for Instant Message, and voice headset. This increases the amount of development effort required to launch an XBox Live game versus a PS2 online game.
The PS2 supports a USB keyboard for online chat. The XBox does not support a keyboard, counting on their required headset support to be enough.
Which is the better service? I am putting my money on Microsoft as providing an overall better service.
With the PS2 there are no guarantees of what your experience will be from game to game. Different games will have different interfaces and capabilities. They'll have different hosting infrustructures, with different levels of server reliability.
With the XBox you will get consistency. You'll get a gaming ID that your online friends can use to find you regardless of what game you're playing. You'll get about the same level of reliability accross servers and similar ping times. Having access to online features that work consistently accross all games (instant message, voice headset) will help people feel a sense of consistency that will let them focus on the game and not on the interface.
Keep in mind as geeks we aren't as sensitive to interface consistency as muggles..er non geeks. Most non geeks don't like figuring out how to do something with each new title.
I'm not convinced that XBox is going to become the market leader, in fact if Sony has brains they will crush the XBox with the PS3 and include all the best features of XBox Live in the PS3's network play. However, unless Sony makes changes to how they run things, for now the XBox live service looks like a better service (and the better service doesn't always win).
You could run a proxy that only accepts connections to trusted hosts (your internet appliances). That proxy could itself access the trusted host through SSL, but ignore the warning. The proxy itself would have a valid ssl certificate.
So you'd access URLs like:

I don't know your girlfriend, and I don't know how she feels, but if your girlfriend has always wanted a diamond wedding ring, then symbolicly it's going to always mean a lot to her if she gets one. As much as you may rationalize not getting her one she will ultimately resent your rationalizing away her feelings.
You may think a Tux watch is a better way to show your love for her, but if she does't feel the same, it isn't.
If it is important to her, if she feels it is a symbol of marriage and represents your love and devotion, then it is one for her -- isn't that enough?
The Nvidia Geforce 4 4200 generally runs most things about 50% faster than a radeon 8500 and costs less. It's definitely the best value gamer card on the market.
Here's a good article with some benchmarks on this great value card.
If one of my dad's friends had given me anything with sexual connotations I know it would have made me uncomfortable.
Give her an MP3 player, that also has voice recording capabilities. She can record those boring lectures, and then play them back if she wants to. Plus it can be used for tunes as well.

All they need to do is modify Explorer as it ships with Windows to not access any external URLs. We're talking 10 lines of code here! You can still then use Explorer to browse your filesystem, etc.
When you 'install' Explorer, those 10 lines of code can be disabled.
You don't really need to rip the guts of IE out of Windows to remove the unfair advantage.
You should probably seek legal advice now. If you can't afford that for some reason, you should probably take a look at an existing 3rd party's beta agreement (poor man's legal advice).
Assuming your agreement isn't sufficient, send them an updated one now, and get them to sign it. This isn't an area for negotiation, they agree now you own all the IP, or they stop using your product immediately.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer...might as well be called Fluffy the Vampire Slayer. It's hard to take a show with such a silly premise, and a hottie like SMG as the main character, seriously.
But seriously you should take it because Buffy has got some of the best damned writing on TV today, and it keeps getting better.
Joss isn't just churning out the class-A stories, he's delving into new and exciting territory. While other shows consider themself to be forward thinking by including five seconds of girl-girl kissing, Buffy features a deep well developed relationship between Tara and Willow. This season's musical epsiode features exceptional music, vocals, and choreography. It was a total diversion from the standard Buffy format, it was incredibly good, and it leaves the viewer wondering what kind of genious could create something so different, so wonderful, and for just one episode.
Joss.
The man is a genious.
Hopefully he won't have to throw in an angst-ridden geek character for Slashdot readers to appreciate the brilliance that is Joss.

I don't mind paying service charges for VOIP, but I'm surprised I need to buy hardware.
Even if it doesn't work as well, VOIP should be accessible with a soundcard and a microphone. I'm not so excited by this announcement.
And the graphics are even worse.
