  1. Actually on RTFM = Read the Funny Manual? · · Score: 1, Interesting

The article talks about how there are companies whose sole function is to take native documentation and translate it into another language. Sounds easy, but it's not. These companies deal with all sorts of native land societal, religious and fundamental PC.

Different societies have different views of their world. For example, in the U.S., documentation tends to use a lot of humor to keep things light and lively. This isn't so in Europe. Hungarians know that everything will eventually break and being the industrious do-it-their-selfers they want their manuals to read like a Chilton book. Japanese manuals often contain creative cartoons that if placed in another country's documentation, viewers may not take the company and their product serious.

Another humorous tidbit included several paragraphs describing an event where the box-art for Painter 5 contained a left opened hand palm with flames coming out of it. The article indicated that in several countries the left hand is considered unclean and showing the open palm is extremely offensive. The cake icing flesh burning wasn't smart too.

Though I found the article somewhat lacking is detail. Countries even take offense to certain fonts and colors being used. This is one of the main reasons why most companies like Macromedia, Microsoft and IBM tend to go take the safe route and from the get-to use ubiquitous type styles and colors for their corporate branding, product designs and websites.

All in all this article was is a great read.

  2. Wait on Will Digital Cinema Wipe-Out Today's Movie Theaters? · · Score: 0

The main reason these screens could afford the technology is most happened to be in major cities where they would return their investments.

When Lucas released the digital version of Episode II, only around 100 screens had it. And of those many people said the colors were "blotchy" and separation "not perfect".

When more companies take notice of the huge profit potentials of the digital projection industry you'll start to see big companies (SONY, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, etc.) start to put out their own equipment. Competitive pricing schemas may make current prices reasonable. And like computer technology, as new DP technology is release, old generations will drop in price.

I'd said wait until the market becomes saturated with digital screens then jump on in.

  5. Somewhat similar overview on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 0

This whole Star Wars versus Spiderman is getting old. Each is a great movie. This is beginning to sound a lot like the Star Trek versus Star Wars arguments that started around the early 80s when Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released.

Let's take for example the movie Saving Private Ryan (Ryan) versus the HBO mini-series event Band of Brothers (BOB). On a whole BOB is simply far and away a much better movie experience than Ryan. Granted there are a few episodes of BOB that where aren't as good as others, yet the richness and depth of the mini-series simply blows away the movie, both of which take place during the same time period. Remember Star Wars is many stories rolled into one. It's about the raise and fall off a dominating empire. It's the story of a family, whose lives are shattered by many events. It's about an alliance of rebel confronting, however enormous the odds are, and an omnipresent empire. It's about redemption. We may not see it now, but when all these films are done and released on DVD then you'll see something magical. Something epic. Something mythic.

I for one now see Darth Vader more as the Anakin character than evil villain we loved to hate. I thank Lucas for introducing the prequels, and I can't wait for Episode III.

Lucas tends to be liberal at times, so I can only hope he will stick with his original 12 episodic grand Epic, or at the very least the 9 episodes I remember him mentioning in an interview back in the early 80s.

About a month ago I was in a Best Buy, browsing the XBox games section. I remembered I needed another controller so I grabbed one off the shelf. I noticed a few new titles when one of the patrons purusing the section wanted to get my feedback on the Xbox. I told them that it was a nice console but the current amount of games and the pricing of games was high. They asked me if it was worth buying and I told them sure, if you have the funds. But I told them to go buy the console from EB. Basically EB offers a 15-day exchange/refund whereas BB only offers an exchange for the same item, and ONLY if your item proves to be broken.

I bought a HP LaserJet 1200se printer about 4 months ago from a BB in Elk Grove California (in a popular area called Laguna). Anyhow, the staff came up to me and asked me if I needed any help and I told them I saw the HP listed on their site for $429. They helped me find the printer. They even gave me two 500 sheets of LaserJet paper for free! I also purchased a 3-year warranty. Basically what I'm saying is you *can't* say every Best Buy is bad, because I shopped at one that was quite the opposite. I think the receipt you received with "$129.99" was a glitch, instead of the "$329.99". Ecommerce applications are notorious for having bugs.

  10. open source the box on Xbox Price Drops For Australia And Europe · · Score: 0

You know if Microsoft released a disc that contained the SDK, toolkits and more tons of people would buy the Xbox for the simple fact that it'll be more than just a gaming machine, and more than a pc. With the SDK in the hands of the development community, we would start to see a LOT of really cool stuff. Stuff that doesn't even necessarily have to be "games". The XBOX, unlike any other console, HAS a hard drive, and a big hard drive too boot (pun intended). I really think Microsoft should leverage this to their advantage. And leverage it soon before their console dies.

And Zarathustra.fi has a great point about Microsoft's game pricing. Some games like Halo, Max Payne and Madden 2002, I would say are worth $50. But games like Arctic Thunder, Azurik: Rise of Perathia, Blood Wake, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fuzion Frenzy, LOONS -- The Fight For Fame, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, Shrek, TransWorld Surf, Unreal Championship and Whacked are definitely a few titles that are worth $40 and under.

  12. steam power on PC Fan of the Future? · · Score: 0

This fan could take things one step further by varying its speed based on the heat of the CPU. As far as how this would work, one idea would be to hollow out the central part of the fan and completely enclosed a small amount of liquid inside. The heatsink's heat absorption would cause the liquid inside the fan to stream up, which would in turn set the fan's speed. Thoughts?

I find it interesting that Sierra Studios still continues to use the name Sierra even though their company is now in Washington State. At one point Sierra Studios was called Sierra On-Line. Likewise, Sierra On-line was changed from On-Line Systems when their small company decided to resettle in the foothills community of Oakhurst, California, near the Sierra Mountains. Even Sierra's logo is Yosemite's Half Dome.

The On-line portion of their name came about when Sierra offered a dialup gaming service called The Sierra Network. This proprietary service featured Sierra's top-rated games like Red Baron, Golf, card games, and others. Eventually AT&T became cosponsors of the service. I not sure what cause the service's downfall because I didn't stay with the service long enough. I did remember when they introduced LarryLand. This was an adult themed game park based on the Leisure Suit Larry universe. Games included Poker, Slots, etc. Chatting was not moderated here and people could say whatever they wanted.

What do you mean the target demographic has changed? Star Wars has always been for and will always be for childen and adults that are young at heart. The Saga has never changed its target since the original trilogy, you just grew up and see the world from a little more mature perspective.
