(Incidentally - someone tell me why the Xbox's built-in Ethernet is such a big 'advantage'. I don't get that. You have to buy the Live Kit to use it anyways, right? Why couldn't they have put the adapter with that and saved some buyers - or themselves - a few dollars?)

Well, even if you don't have Live, then you can use a standard network setup to play system link games, no special cables required. Previously, to play on PS2, you either only played 1 vs. 1 with the link cable, or you picked up a firewire hub and a number of 4-to-6 pin firewire cables for additional players. Now that the PS2 network adaptor is out has the functionality of system linking changed on it at all? I haven't picked one up for mine yet.

  5. Re:Concerning NT/2K/XP and changing hardware... on XPde: Cloning the XP Interface · · Score: 2

Under Win2K I've done a swap between a Gigabyte 7IX and a Asus K7 mainboard, and the only issue was that I had to cycle through the boot-and-reboot process five times for it to get all the drivers in place. It was stable for about three weeks, then I ended the little experiment by doing a fresh install.

At work I was building a utility machine out of spare parts and tried swapping a drive with XP between systems and it puked before it even displayed the logo. :) This is the only time I've had a bluescreen under XP.

And this machine had the mainboard swapped out last night under XP, but it was only a very minor upgrade. An MSI KT333 Ultra to a KT4V. Since the boards have only minor hardware changes and revisions it was expected to go smoothly and did :)

After turning off all the "pretty" and "friendly" stuff that wastes screenspace in XP I find it a reliable and competent OS. But then I've never had to try and program for it. ;)

  6. dual boot fud on Linux in the Workplace · · Score: 2

Linux has failed to catch on among ordinary users because PC manufacturers have been prevented from offering dual-boot systems.

That's not why it's failed to catch on. It's because the average computer user still finds Windows complicated to use... and that's when it comes pre-installed on their computer when they buy it. To the average user Linux is just too complicated with diminishing returns. If you walk into a store and pick up a piece of software chances are it will either run on your Windows or Mac machine. With Linux you have to put some work into it, like actually reading some documentation or finding the site. A scary proposition by itself, let alone trying to install it from ISOs.

Linux still won't be consumer friendly (despite some of the great packages out there) for years to come.

Anyone else who has done Windows support for an organization with 5000+ employees in it can vouch for the reluctance of the user to actually think while using their machine.

It could be used in reverse as well...
You feed all your soldiers rations with heavy amounts of garlic. Everyone stinks but they can safely run though a minefield of combined motion/odor detectors. The pursuing enemy attempts to follow them in and is blown apart because their lack of key odor doesn't disable the mines.

You do a good job of describing *any* movie targeting the mass-media demographic. Summer blockbusters (or failures) aimed at the general population usually overexplain the obvious and use the wonderful hollywood foreshadowing method where whatever the hero does for fun in the first 2 minutes of the movie is used to defeat the bad guy.

Neither Amistad nor Schindler's List were intended to cater to the blockbuster crowd, and were exemplary pieces of work. For those who haven't seen Amistad I would highly recommend it. For such a serious subject it has some great situational humour that lightens the mood in a natural way, without detracting from the storyline at all.

The Sanyo stuff was constantly coming back for warranty replacement, whereas the Panasonic items (mostly phones and stereos for both brands) were brought back for the following two reasons:
    1) cordless phone battery needed replacing.
    2) user damaged it themselves, but had replacement warranty.
