never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever point the finger or put blame on any one person or group of people...it will bite you in the ass one way or another!
I'm over in europe, recycling my waste, cycling to work, using public transport, driving a car that does 50mpg and getting an ever increasing percentage of my electricity from renewable resources
No, its not. Its more akin to saying that you are safer in a car that has seatbelts, airbags, antilock breaks, and a proximity warning system than in an old beater without any of the above. C is the beater, it provides few safeguards against all manner of programming problems.
no matter how safe the car is...it wont help you if you are a shitty driver.
I find it ironic that you think that the "design paradigm" of programs needs to be looked at, but apparently not the "design paradigm" of programming languages, or the effect that their use has when used to produce programs, especially large software systems. Apparently you believe that there are no practical differences that result from using FORTRAN, B, BCPL, C, COBOL, ML, Basic, Pascal, Module 2, Occam, Ada, forth, Prolog, or Lisp since they all produce machine code. Right.
i dont recall, even once, arguing the fact that some languages are more adept for tackling certain types of problems...although, you cannot argue that c has been the language of choice of most system designers (using words like most means that i am acknowledging the fact that other languages have been used to write os'). i was just speaking out against the original posters instance that by using a different language...the result would be more secure systems...which is pure bullshit...you may be solving one set of problems...but there will always be new ones to complain about.
christ...this is like saying people jump higher wearing nike's than they do in reeboks.
their design paradigms need to be re-evaluated...every language you program has the SAME end result...machine code. programming in c or c++ is not going to make sofware less secure if you KNOW WHAT THE "F" YOU ARE DOING.
bottom line, c and c++ provide the flexability for system programmers to control every aspcet of thier code...if a routine call is flawed...then write a new one that isnt...or learn to program better...dont blame it on the damn language.
"Also, I don't know if I'd directly compare it to car-modding. Car-modding is tons more expensive and seems to be geared more towards showing off to others since you're driving around in public all day. Some people show off their cases at LAN parties and shit, but mine just sits under my desk. It wasn't to show off... it was just for fun.:)"
hrm...id say for most kids who mod...its cause they wanna have a wicked kick ass system at their next lan...so yea...they do it to show off also. its almost like modding has been born by kids that couldnt afford to upgrad their hardware but wanted something to make their computers stand out for under 50 bones...personally...i love it...for me, i dont lan and i dont play games anymore *cough* i should *cough* but i love building and creating and modding is fun when you just wanna make something for the sake of making something.
hrm...why doesnt anybody ever mention the soundtrack as well. for the first time in a game i found myself saying "shit, this music fits perfectly for this level/map/whatever!"
well...i lied...i guess i found the training sequences from mike tysons punch out to be quite catchy as well.
for the past 15 years guitar has been my escape from the regualr world and a life with responsabilities. when i think of gibson i think of smokey bars, jack daniels, and good ol' blues and rock...just the kinds of things i seek out when i want to relax/escape...
i dunno...but for me...it sounds like a detraction from the imperfections, the feel...the soul of guitar.
i'll probably be proven wrong, and end up appreciating this tech on some level...i was the same way about all digital hd recording...but for now...i'll stick with whats worked for decades.
it all boils down to the fact that many of us older folks like to spend our limited free time doing other things, and also, we dont have to beg our parents for a new xp 2200+..well, ok...some of us replaced begging our parents with begging our wives...which, is possibly much worse...err...man...i wish is was 15 again...
"I was a developer at Mentor Graphics and we had mouse gestures (we called them 'strokes') at least back to 1986 and probably a couple years before that."
well then i'd like to personally thank you cause those "gestures" made my life as a circuit/layout designer much much much easier.
while i disagree with the overall statement being made here there is one thing about consoles that developers love...they are locked into one set of unchanging hardware. when you delelop a game for a console you remove the ambiguity caused by having endless hardware configurations. casting that bullshit aside allows developers to focus on making the game better and not on making the game compatable and playable to a large user base. this alone is enough to cause many companies to just shift development. there are issues with multiple platform versions and porting but by and large it's not as bad as trying to support everybody from the casual gamer with his voodoo3 to the \/\/1ck3d 1337 d00d and his gf32 TiH20 NV97.
while the business model the RIAA may be antiquated and just plain shitty, the rules for getting your band heard and noticed have not changed. the end result is the same, get as many people to listen to the music as possible...
nothing is more powerful than word of mouth. the simple fact is that you wont increase your online popularity without finding a way to generate some buzz. i would begin by contacting as many independant music review sites as you can...small or large, they have readers who will be intrested in hearing the music...if it is as good as you say. there is no substitute for playing live and plugging your new cd/website...people are much more computer literate these days...and just advertising a site at every show will generate traffic!
there is no subistitute, in my opinion, for playing live as much as is humanly possible...that is where you get the most intrest...people come to bars to hear bands...they will be most open to your music there.
dont think of your online music and sales as a different entity...think of it as a way for the people who come to the shows to go home and learn more and or buy.
american culture makes the masses stupid. the masses are the ones who fall for the "follow the herd" marketing ploys of corperate america, hence stupid people buy cell phones.
honestly in my opinion, we have always been a bunch of collective morons...now were just trying to find excuses as to why...so its more than just a little ironic that its a dumb excuse.
"I know of EE's who think they dont need E-Mag because they are going to do VLSI."
this is off topic, but what you said is so true...when i was getting my EE undergrad degree, the technology that we were using was so coarse that secondary EM and micorwave effects were neglegible. then i graduated and was thrown right into the wonderful world of sum-micron design at Ghz speeds...guess what, now EM and microwave theory is very relevant...most students would understand this if they were exposed to the technology that industry uses, rather than lagging behind and having to catch up on 5 years of innovation after graduating.
specializing in a "wireless" degree is useless...if i was hiring...give me somebody with a strong background in EE and Physics over these cupcakes anyday.
erm...more like people have been able to study this anyplace that offers a solid EE degree program. its not like its a brand new communication paradigm. my vote is that its just a marketing stunt.
instead of saying that music today blows, why arent people doing something about it??? there are shitloads of really talented, brilliant, and creative people in almost every city in the country/world.
dammit...get out, explore, go to shows, if you find something you like promote it, tell your family friends and coworkers. help out the people who really deserve to be noticed and have something to say...its more fun to discover somebody in a samll bar than to wait patiently for the drivel that the "boardroom musicians" dish out.
nothing is more powerfull than positive word of mouth...
its not just that... a lot of the 14 year olds who bought her earlier albums are now 16 and much cooler...so they dont buy them, being cool, and peer pressure are a much more dangerous to the 10-second-attention-span-entertainment industy.
"like, you know...like briteny was like my favorite when i was 14...but i'm like sooo much older now and i like listen to cooler stuff now."
i completely agree...nut it up and get her one. look at it this way, if you have stated your beliefs and are truely passionate about not financing amoral people by buying diamonds...imagine the message you will send your girl...you love her so much that even somthing you believe in with all of your heart isnt as important as her.
well....either she'll think that, or just figure your're an incredible pussy and she'll be walking all over you the rest of your life.
never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever point the finger or put blame on any one person or group of people...it will bite you in the ass one way or another!
dude.
you'd make a shitty texan then.
dude.

hrm...my vote is for just becoming a better programmer and not relying on the language or os to make bugs go away.
dude.
