I bought UO a few weeks after it came out. First online game I played really, and the first few weeks just amazed me. The first few years, I remember them doing a lot of quests involving seers. They were people who worked for them, and role-played a person who would have a big quest ready for players to embark on, for those who haven't played it before.

I remember a big quest that was over the course of a few months, and at the end, I was picked to stand atop this tower at the maze, and hold one of the staves of the elements. When we brought them all together (1 other player and 2 seers if I remember correctly) it spawned a *ton* of elementals all around the maze. Later on they took the staff I held, and put it in the moonglow museum with a tooltip that said, "Staff of Air, Held by Cloud" or something to that effect.

I played on the sonoma server, which was also the home of Oasis, and Fight Night. Fight night was this "event" i guess you could call it, where a bunch of people had duels in the desert (Oasis) on friday nights. This got so popular, that they were able to get the people who ran the game to build arena's and special buildings and such. It was also big fun when the pks would teleport in and try to distrupt things. We'd have the biggest battles.

Those first few years were a blast. I'm not sure if it's because I was new to the whole mmorpg thing, or because it was just an excellent game. When I think about it, it's probably the latter. I quit a bit after they split the world into 2 realms. I did come back a few times though with new accounts, but it just isn't like it was. Since then i've played EQ, DAoC, SWG, AC, and currently WoW, and none of them are as fun as UO was when it first came out, IMO.

    LAN Party Setup Info
    Lanparty.com

Or just search google for "Hosting Lan Party" (without quotes, not sure if it matters).

Good luck to ya, a well-setup lan party can be a blast. The last one I went to, it was quite a few years ago, we played UT I believe. Each team got a room pretty much to setup, so you couldn't see the opponent, but you could year them when they yelled because you just killed them again =).

  16. Re:CrazyJim here on World of Warcraft Launches · · Score: 1

The one thing I like about WoW is that most of the classes are pretty different. An example would be, a warrior uses rage to use abilities. Rage is gained by hitting a monster, or getting hit by one. A rogue uses energy and combo points, energy just regens back normally, and combo points are used with finishing moves.

Another cool thing about warriors is that they have 3 stances, an offensive stance, defensive, and a middle one. Each of those has a type of counter attack against parry, blocks, etc. So during a fight, if you play it right, you can switch stances and counter attack the monsters, which is a lot funner then clicking auto attack on eq.

Most of the other classes are pretty standard stuff, but I still find it to be more fun then most of the other games ive played.

Also, there isn't many games out there where you have something to do at all times. There's *always* a quest or two that you can finish pretty quickly, so if you dont have hours to play you can still advance pretty good.

Im not sure really how you can break out of the "clicking buttons" for a combat system. Do you want a Dance Dance Revolution pad to dance on to do combat?

I remember buying my first MMORPG, Ultima Online, in the falltime of 1997 I believe it was. It was my first game I think i played online, and I was just amazed that all these people were playing the game with me.

Back when UO first came out, they used to employ "Seers". These were guys who created a character and a setting and then roleplayed that character. They would get normal players to come help him do whatever he had setup. The biggest one I was involved with, dealt with 4 staves of the elements. My characters name was Cloud, and after a couple months of helping out this Seer, he had a big event, in which he gave me the Staff of Air to hold for this ceremony. After all this took place, they took the staff that I held, and put it on display at the Moonglow museum, and when you clicked on it, it had my name on it, somethin like "Staff of Air held by Cloud in the staff ritual".

I don't think they do anything like that now, but I tell ya, it was a blast doing all that stuff. Since then i've played a lot of MMORPGs, but none have come close to how much fun that was back in the day.

My friend got the Matrix beta a few weeks back. When I saw him in combat, I completely changed my interest in the game from "Hmm I wonder what its gonna be like" to "Boy that game sucks". I don't really know exactly how it all works, but I'm pretty sure that you get to chose some skills to raise up, which probably lead to more. When you get into a fight, you chose an attack of some sort, and an icon for that attack goes to the top of the screen. Your opponent then choses an attack, and it goes to the top of the screen, next to your attack. Those 2 attacks are then compared, and a final result is displayed, and dmg is done to whoever won the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" deal at the top of the screen. In other words, combat is *slow*, at least from what I saw.
