  1. Boost, Ensure, etc. on For Those Long Coding Sessions: The Food Patch · · Score: 2, Interesting

If you want a meal replacement, gulp down a can of Boost. You can get a generic 6 pack for about 7 bucks here in Canada. They have 353 Cal, 17.6g Protein, 44g Carbs, an assload of vitamins, etc. Which seems to be better than those patches. You can drink one in a matter of seconds (that way you don't taste it), and you're good for a couple hours, I'd say. I'm a geek, and I never eat chocolate, drink caffeinated beverages or all that junk, and I still am able to code for long stretches, and, I can also still play my favorite sports. Nutrition is a good thing for your future. These drinks are equivalent to the price of a bottle of Jolt, and they do liven you up, too. Just an alternative view of this hold geekdom thing... Although this reply might be a bit late... Meh...

Are people thinking "it was funny the first time, so according to Joe's Humor Law, the joke's humor will double every 18 months"? Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way...

I suppose, if you want to have a narrow view of what constitutes a weapon, the link won't provide any evidence. But providing intelligence, at least to me, is just as useful as providing physical weapons. Weapons are not very helpful if you don't know where the enemy is located, or what they have. This is what the information provided.

However, the way you interpret the provision of intelligence is entirely up to you...

  9. An alternative? on Star Wars Galaxies Only to Allow One Character Per Account · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know that in Warcraft III, Blizzard has a ton of data to store when it comes to team games. What they did was set a 30-day inactivity limit, at which point the record for that team is erased. To me, this seems a bit more fair than "you can only have one team" (character in this case).

I'm curious if this idea is feasible for them, because it would make more people happy I bet... Or maybe set an inactivity limit for additional characters to 30 days, and let the person keep their selected primary character indefinitely. Then if they go away for a bit, they don't lose everything.

But the fact that he's complaining about how much data each customized face takes up makes it sound like they didn't plan this thing out very well. They could have sacrificed a bit of customizability in exchange for smaller data sets.

Anyway, enough ranting... That's just my opinion.

Do you understand why it is so hard? In the game I was a champion of a country; virtous, chaste, and helping all I could.

I think this statement is the source of many problems with these games. See, you weren't the champion of a country or anything, your character was. I think a lot of people lose touch with reality, and that's why they have problems like this. Rather than simply controlling the character in a virtual world, they become the character. Their real life goes down the tube because they are too busy living the life of their character.

This isn't the same thing. The question should read 'should cab drivers be allowed to show commercial TV in their cabs' - complete with all the commercials which are already being used to pay the fucking royalties on whatever is shown in the 'non-ad' breaks.

This makes me think that if they started charging royalties for commercial TV, they would have to start charging stores that sell TV's for the public performance... Wow... This is fucking insane...

  16. Re:hmm on Linux Spurs MS Price Cuts · · Score: 1

Isn't that what they do at most Universities? Take the kids who would pirate things like VS.net, give the full copies for free in academic non-commerical licences, and get them hooked so that if they ever wanna do something commercial with it they've gotta shell out for the full version (because it's all they know how to use)...

I'm not sure if you're implying that computing science people use VS or not... I don't know what's going on at all the other Universities, but in computing science here we are pretty much all *nix based. Windows was only used in first year computing courses, and they program in Code Warrior (ack!), not VS.

That said, MS holds all kinds of different seminars for .NET stuff, offering free food to people that show up, but barely anything is MS-based in our courses. I guess I should also mention that they do offer free academic licenses to people that want VS .NET, but that's hardly "all they know how to use", and could be the opposite (as in they know how to use everything but that)... Just my two cents on the subject.
