How about *ahem* getting an education discount?
Not a student? Erm, how about asking one to buy one (after giving them the money to them first).
I mean, the cheapest iPods aren't that much more from a top end MD player ~250 thereabouts, its not *that* expensive.
Try looking on eBay? or Loot.com there sometimes can be good deals to be found.
not even that, since most mobile carriers - at least here in the UK are opting for the "electronic" top ups instead.
This means, you'll have to 'register' a top up card with your phone number, so whenever you need to top up, you simply hand the cashier the top up swipe card and the money and in a short few seconds, your pre-paid account is renewed with however much you wanted.
I believe the phone operators are offering various incenetives to get you to use the electronic top-ups. ie. small amounts of top up like 5 and 10 are only availible electronically. But yeah.. the only waste from this method, is a small till reciept proving that you purchased the credit.
how about a trackpad? like the ones found on laptop etc.
They utilise said fingers but I don't think they offer any more precision control than an average mouse.:|
Very true.. this extends over to the iPod that my friend has. He's dropped it a dozen times so I wasn't surprised when one day his iPod showed an unhappy face.
Since it was accidental damage, we were a little hesitant about sending it off to Apple, but since we had nothing to lose, we called up Apple.
Next day, we got a box to put the iPod in.
2 Days later, we received a phone call about the iPod and how it cannot be fixed.. but.. they're sending us a new iPod (although still 2nd generation).
I've always viewed extended warranties as a marketing ploy, but having experienced Apple's service, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend AppleCare.
pr0n at the flick of the wrist.
heh. sorry, just couldn't resist. But seriously though,
"flick, flick flick, flick" for each "image".;) and plus its for geeks so, even better!
I should think so. I think you'll just need to set up a software basestation.
This is what I'm planning when I get a desktop mac, you can set up Airport as a software basestation to share internet connection etc.. . I think there are some loss in functionality though and range - but I haven't tried it yet. That said, peer-to-peer ad-hoc networks seem to perform adequately when connecting to other airport enabled macs.
Going off-topic here, but woa, I have just discovered live spell checking in forms within Safari. Awesome;)
/end rant
With all these fancy features resulting in convergence, I'm afraid that the "game" console that we've all grown up with are a dying entity.
Soon, these "lounge-PC's" will encounter bugs/crashes and before you know it, they'll start coming in all shades of beige.
I think that companies should not forget why people by games consoles in the first place, and perhaps add modular components.. or not. Just gimme good games god dammit!
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Apple.com
It's clean, simple to use, with lot's of content - compared to Microsoft's website, this is a lot better, and I've read somewhere it reflects Apple's philosophy's or what have you... but I just think it's a really cool site - and Apple being my online Mecca, I visit it daily and never seem to tire from it.
Aside from all the comments regarding/. effect and bandwidth, does any one know how they managed to do this? Did the guys just capture it off their TV and then added voice overs?
It's an interesting concept, and I'm sure some bright spark can actually make a basic TV series outta say, GTA 3 and The Hitman.
I've been following this since Episode 1, and it gets funnier with each iteration, as the series builds up - I only wish them epsiodes were longer..:)
Well, being a UNIX n00b, I like having tutorials open in Safari in the background, with a semi translucent terminal window above. That way, I read the instructions and practise at the same time, as opposed to swtiching back and forth between windows (which takes effort and time).
Well, I don't know about you, but my brain doesn't have a problem focusing on the terminal windoe (foreground) and the safari window (background).
Yeah, maybe I'll have to move the window occasioanlly, but IMHO, its problem free. YMMV with translucency, but my opinion is that they are a good thing when implemented correctly.
And yes, I guess you can have a dual monitor setup, but for a 12" iBook, its really not an option is it?
Crikey, at that price, I might as well save up to get either a 17" PowerBook or get the 15" now.. both are way thinner, lighter and better looking.
I think no discussion about notebooks is complete without a comparison to Apple notebooks and the obligatory Mac Vs. PC debate. However, I'd just like to point out that their [Apple's] notebooks are just *that* much better (IMHO) than anything that's on the market.
Dell and co should take Sony's stand and actually try to build a)Fully featured notebooks b)Pay attention to asthetics c)light and portable enough to be actually used as a mobile computer.
*start rant*
I take my iBook everywhere with me and much to PC notebook owners, I don't feel it a hassel to open it up just to check on a date on my iCal or catch up on work anywhere. OS X's instant on makes it as if I'm using a palm top.. unlike XP's startup from sleep. It's those 20 seconds or so that puts people off from starting their computer
*end rant*
I took a look at the "bottom" of the Dell on the website and noted all the fugly holes, ventelatiion, battery compartments, compulsory Windows stickers and other bloat. Why can't they just keep it simple??
What if I gave them my bank account with £0? Tell them to deposit into an empty account.. instead of providing your *real* account?
Also, can the banks track who makes the withdrawl so the criminals can be caught?
Is it me? or does American schools sound a lot worse than British school? I mean, sure we have the usual bullies and the "townies"/"rude boys" whatever are just plain fuckers, but sounds like we don't have such large seperations between students.
Could this be due to the fact we all have to wear the same uniform? We have the popular kids, the geeks etc, but because we were in uniform, it put everyone on the same level. Now in 6th form, we get to wear our own clothes, we get a whole variety of people/cultures that I've never noticed before in my classmates.
I don't think by being a geek necessarily correlates into being unpopular - as (self advertising here) - in my group of friends we are popular (more or less..perhaps the B table refered in the article), we have a respected band, we are known by all the popular people (skaters and the trendies) and yet we are total geeks. Ok, admittedly, arty geeks, but geeks nevertheless.
Well, that was my rant... anyone else with a thought on the British school system?
Ok, so apart from sharing the playlists, this sounds exactly like iChat for OS X.
In iChat I can do all the things 3degrees claims to do - perhaps not the playlist thing... but I can share pictures by dragging a pic into the chat, files and folders by dragging and dropping. I can put all my music into my webserver directory, and hey, I don't even need to be connected to the Internet with Rendevous.
In addition, when Apple decides to to that iTunes-over-Rendezvous thing, it will be even better.
Looks like M$ is just playing catch up; and trying to appeal to the masses - from which, I can see their point, and I'm not dissing them for doing so. It's just that its nothing to jump about (which, I thnk, is the general reaction here anyway...);)
taking the whole stability of OSX for granted - sometimes it does this - no biggie, just re-launch the Finder or sometimes, when worst comes to worst - reboot.
I had similar problems, so just ALT-COMMAND-ESC;) and relaunch.

I'll just sneaky sneaky download and patch my 10.2.6 system with 10.3.1.

I've seen this posted about 4 times now across several Apple stories.
Let the flames BEGIN! mwahahaha ;)
... you're new here aren't you ;)
how do you backup the dock? forgive me if it sounds n00bish :)

don't you mean Starcraft? Yeah, Terrans (Yanks), Protoss (Europe) and Zerg (the Chinese etc) =p

Isn't that a PC/IE trait? My IE for mac never used to give me that, nor Safari.
Hmm, just thought I'd bring that to light.

man, 5 minutes? my mac can do it in 2 ;)
does it remove itself after installation? or does it just sit there taking up space?
Did anyone else read the title as "Salvaging DRM"? Hmmm, for minute there I thought answering machines were DRM protected.
