I worked at Wal-mart(I was young and naive back then), and they had denied me a week of vacation that I should have received (I worked full-time for over a year), and I bitched up and down the chain of management. they wouldn't go out of their way to actually fix something for a lowly drone. It turns out that they, and the almighty time clock system, classified me as part-time because I was under 18 years old. This was so they could avoid issues with state and federal child labor laws.
sadly, this is the way retail america works...
anyways... one weekend, I asked to use MY personal vacation time for a few days on the next weekend, I figured since THEY HAD STOLEN ONE WEEK OF VACATION FROM ME that they might have some decency and allow me a few days off that I chose. This didn't really go over well with the store manager. He demanded that I try to trade shifts (almost everyone was already working), then he outright refused my request. I told him it wasn't an option, and I wouldn't be available to work... when I came back, they gave me the "option" of quitting...
wal-mart can burn in hell...

and I thought 2004 would have flying cars and motororized sidewalks, and jobs where you get fired and rehired almost hourly ("GEORGE!!! YOU'RE FIRED!!!"---"B-b-b-ut Mr. Spacely!"---"OK, you're hired back!")... well, no flying cars or motorized sidewalks yet:(
My friend sometimes tells me the story of a "Richard Stroker" he knew in his middle school days.
One day, over the school intercom, the new office worker called out (very loudly) "Dick Stroker, can you please come to the office, Dick Stroker, please come to the office"...
Sued by a city in West Virginia? If cities could sue for a company using a city name, about 50% of small businesses could be sued for that reason...
So, no, they aren't afraid of being sued over using a city's name for a development name... mostly because they can't be sued for that...
If you're looking for anything on warp records, check out bleep.com...
They don't have any international restrictions... Of course, don't go there expecting anything too mainstream. But, it's still an option for non-American music downloaders...
Try searching almost anything related to anime. "anime picture", a simple search, brought up some porn sites in the first few pages. This problem doesn't plague google in any way, but it is still present.
And just to note, I searched google for "XFree86" and did find some porn sites... yes, they were way down in the results, but they do exist...
it was just a wild theory. I've done some clean searches on google and I've gotten many porn site results, especially in the first page. I just figured that the same thing happened to MSN, and that MSN blocked the results because of the prevalent adult content in the results.
I'm not trying to defend microsoft, I was just trying to offer a rational explanation.
XFree finds the XFree86 site as well...
I think some porn sites plastered the term "XFree86" all over themselves so a majority of the search results are for porn sites. MSN sees this and won't show any of the results.
A basic search for "porn" also yields the exact same result. A warning for adult content shows up, and there's a link for a search at nightsurf.com
I don't see anything evil related to MSN specifically blocking any search terms. I just see a search engine that likes to block "adult content".
Have you ever heard of a Limited format game? Sealed Deck and Draft throw the concept of "most money wins" out the window. Each player gets a predetermined amount of packs and needs to build a deck and play it. It keeps everyone on an even field.
It is a game of money. Whoever has the most money can buy the best deck that wins instantly. I see it happen all the time at the store.
This statement simply isn't true for Type 2 (the current expansion block, last expansion block, and the base sets are the only legal sets), or Sealed Deck or Draft formats.
Right now, in Type 2, the Affinity deck is very competetive, and it requires 2 or 3 copies of a rare card, the deck might cost you $15 and some time to borrow commons and uncommons from friends.
And in sealed deck and draft, money isn't an issue, everyone gets the same amount of packs to work with. Those are all about deck building and play skill.
Seriously, who the fuck still plays magic!?!?!
Quite a few people play casually and competetively, especially in the upper midwest, where winter is a great time to stay inside.
It's like the people that still use Windows 95, sure it's not as new and flashy, but it still runs on the crappy hardware from years ago... And sometimes, that's all you need.
The site's not even slashdotted, (I hope) most of us can actually click a link (or type in the link, for IE users) and read the original article ourselves, without possibility of alteration from the karma whores.
Next the karma whores are going to start repeating the Slashdot headline and text "in case it ever gets slashdotted."

Stallman Goes to India

SureshD writes "The Hindu is reporting on a 40 minute long meeting between Richard Stallman and the Indian President - Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. After the interview, RMS said that the President was 'receptive' to his views that development of software should be seen as a political and social issue and not just from the technological point of view. Interestingly, the article mentions that the President had prepared for the meeting by downloading and reading Stallman's biography (Free as in Freedom) from the Internet."
I know the Atari 2600 pac-man game was pretty bad, I owned it at one point.
Unfortunately, classic arcade game to home conversions still leave something to be desired. I recently purchased Midway Arcade Treasures, and the steering on some of the games is incredibly touchy... Although I can't really complain when I get 24 great games for $25... (I recommend it! An awesome bundle of games, even supports more than 2 players in the games that originally did!)
On a more nostalgic note... One of my fonder memories of my Sega Genesis was of the version of Ms Pac-Man available for it. It had all sorts of strange mazes, along with an editor! I wish the Pac-Man Collection for GBA would've had something like that instead of Pac-Attack... Pac-Attack is like Tetris meets Puyo Puyo meets a fresh pile of puppy crap. (although the puzzle mode is kind of enjoyable)
Aphex Twin's music has done this for me. At first it just sounds like crappy noise randomly generated, but then you just "get it"...
Aphex Twin's music spans all forms of electronic music, Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 is an incredibly WONDERFUL bedtime album, while Drukqs is a great album while working... There's something about the almost chaotic aspect of it that keeps my mind focused.
It's tough to go back to listening to mainstream radio after experiencing music that changes a person's perspective.
To anyone who ignores/avoids ambient music, or music like most of the Aphex Twin library, I give the same advice, just keep listening, and wait... Eventually, it'll just click, and you win.
Is it still illegal under the DMCA if they're just exploting an already in place bug (or "feature", depends on who you work for)?
Leaving an exploit in a program is just bad security, and if someone uses that exploit to do unwanted things, they're not really circumventing the security, they're just going right through it. The program allows them to get through, regardless of the intent of the program. So would using an exploit like this be considered illegal under any current laws?
I downloaded the whole album from bittorrent a few weeks ago, and enjoyed it so much I actually *gasp* bought the CD...
Almost my entire music collection has been assembled in this manner... It's very similar to borrowing a CD first to see if it's worth listening to. The RIAA's problem is that not much music is worth buying anymore...

That's nothing special, I've cut loose with three severe flares in one hour before!
Although I didn't cause pretty lights in the sky, I just cleared the room

It's Kentucky.
:)
There's a Springfield Kentucky, and nearby is good old Shelbyville...
That's enough proof for me
It'd be more wise to lay the caffeine...
I misread that as "Chaos Concentration Camp", and then I saw it was in Germany... That scared me for a bit...
