Touring is expensive. You have to sell a lot of CDs and merchandise to get your money back. Plus without cash support, how are they people in Dallas going to know who you are? Major media won't promote you, its all word of mouth and advertising dollars.
It is possible to get this right and at least break even, but it takes so much work, and so much upfront cash, that when a label offers to support you with cash and resources, you bend over and say yes.
I'm not so sure surround sound *needs* MP3 compression. DVD Shrink shows movies' 5.1 DTS soundtracks using around 200 - 300MB. That's for a 1 1/2 to 2 hour movie. Not bad for 5 speaker surround, with subwoofer. Not shabby!
I just got my Xbox modded yesterday, and it included the excellent XBMC. Only problem is upgrading it. My version is a few months behind, and you cannot download binaries from Sourceforge, because the project must be compiled with Microsoft's dev kit for the Xbox, and XBMC is an unlicensed project. I still have not figured out how to get binaries!
This project is compiled with Vanilla.NET, I tried running it on my PC before modding my Xbox and it crashed every time I tried to do anything, I might download and try again.
Although modding an Xbox isn't for the faint of heart (I just had someone else do it), it's fun and the software you get is very powerful. I was up and running with MP3's burnt on a DVD-R and some Divx TV shows. By the way, you can make XBMC be the default program when you boot the Xbox, if thats all you want to use your console for.
...And let me add that AOL doesn't just sell content, it also sells bandwidth.
I'll never use this new browser, but Firefox will always be around, no one can take that away. In the long run, Firefox has a lot more to offer than a bastardized version, dedicated to bringing in revenue. Hey thats the trade-off of OSS, people can use it for whatever they want, as long as they stick to the agreement.
They open sourced Netscape, but they didn't promise they wouldn't eventually piss us off.
I mostly agree with what you're saying, but dragging the disk to the trash is only 1 way of ejecting a disk! Other examples: CMD-E, or clicking the Eject button next to the disk in the finder (Panther).
Mac OS X Hints is a great free resource for those wanting to get under the hood of OS X. They have stuff like Applescripts for automation, shareware reviews, and command line stuff. Bookmark it!
Reading these comments strikes me as funny, with all the Steam defenders. If this was an RIAA affiliated music CD, I wonder if the comments like "But Steam has to make a living! Stop the Pirates!" would hold water to us slashdotters.
As usual, Bookpool.com has it for less than Amazon, although shipping is only free with a $40 purchase. Not advertising, but I've saved cash with them before, and always liked their service.
Sorry to be a shill for Sony, but that thing looks great. My camera has a memorystick, by the looks of it I can use the PSP to look at the pictures on a better screen than the camera's. Anyone know if it plays movies off the memorystick, or what the price is going to be in the US?
Its probably digital MIDI data, not analog audio. Bands, get yourself a portable minidisc recorder and a stereo microphone, there you have a nice way to record song ideas.
Thing is, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is such an amazing album, that even if the album hadn't been released online, I still think it would have been succesful. (I'm for it though!) Great music spreads by word of mouth and CD-R and P2P, regardless of who made it. My buddy made me a copy of YHF and that's how I got into that band.
By the way there's a great documentary of the band making the CD, its called I am Trying To Break Your Heart. I highly recommend it. Shows the whole process of being dumped by your label then getting picked up by another label, both of whom were owned by the same umbrella company. Strange stuff, today's music business.
Wilco's ethics are very punk rock, even if their music belongs on its own planet. If you haven't heard YHF, do yourself a favor and pick it up.
How about we make only the rear surround speakers wireless? Either battery or outlet powered is OK, but the worst part of surround sound is routing cables to the rear, the front 4 speakers (counting sub) is not a big deal. Wireless rear speakers would rock.
My panasonic "superdrive" from newegg that I installed came with a DVD-RAM disk. The disk is a 4.7 GB disc, not in a caddy like they used to be. The package says you can read and write like a floppy, unlike DVD-RW which (AFAIK) needs the disc to be closed before reading on another PC. This format seems better than DVD-RW for data, why didn't it catch on? Too little too late?
My friend's mom is a Democract voting for Bush (It's California, Kerry's safe) because she doesn't like Thereza Heinz-Kerry! I felt like slapping her. She has a kid who just got out of Afghanistan and she's willing to vote for the candidate most likely to get her son killed, because she doesn't like the potential first lady. I like her, but damn that's stupid. It shouldn't be a popularity contest like King and Queen of the prom, its the damn government we're talking about here.

Allow me to save you 43% off the listed bn.com price (I hope /. at least gets a cut at that price).
The awesome Bookpool has it for $22.75.

Next announcement: It will be a criminal act to get up and take a leak while the commercials are on.

Look in the forums, there's help available there.
According to the forum posts, it doesn't look that tricky, but you do have to compile without JACK support.
The Classic Football handheld. Fun, cheap, nostalgic.

Everyone who uses tissues calls it Kleenex. Name recognition does not itself destroy competition.

You tell 'em, smart guy!
There's been a lot of talk about robots around here lately, so I want to reiterate - It's all good until they become self aware!
The iPod's battery is removable too. It's quite easy to replace it. Did this moron think it was welded to the circuitboard?
