a tad bit behind our "2001 a space odyssey" schedule !!:p
Somehow, it seems that space exploration has always taken a back seat in any government's agenda, which is understandable. After all, they utilize the tax-payers' money, and these very same tax-payers have been plagued by the Nasa-moon-episode conspiracy theory!
Space exploration however, would be an inevitable part of humanaity's expansion plan. We're way behind star-trek technology, but Roddenberry seemed to know what he was talking about - his communicators have become our cellphones, his interracial kiss (kirk and uhura!) happens all over, matter anti-matter exists... we just need the warp drive!!!

Anyhow, this is not good publicity to accompany the launch of such a major product, especially when its supposed to be a security enhancing product.. but then lots of their launches have had such glitches.... the win95 launch video has become a rage... where gates and his sidekick are demonstrating driver installation in front of a large audiance and the ever-so-popular blue death screen popped up.....
Windows 2000 has been one of Microsoft's best products so far... I hope 2003 Server is better, despite this inauspicious launch ;) hmm , gotta get get back to my Red Hat 9 installation meanwhile

  5. xp /2k on XP Service Pack Slows Programs · · Score: 1

win2k... is a decent product despite the fact that it comes from microsoft and despite the fact that u need to install 2 service packs before you can trust your system. XP however is another headache all together. First, the concept of home and professional, is enough to drive any user user mad. Secondly, we've had this terrible experience with getting an XP professional system to work well with a Windows 2000 Server machine. Despite all service packs and "support", some problems just havent been resolved.
I also happen to have Mandrake 9 installed on my system, installed some of the Windows fonts, and what can I say... Dolphin rocks. :D

Sometimes, governments can be impractical. Sometimes politicians do something just for the sake of getting noticed. I've noticed that lots of countries that havent addressed or handled domestic issues and violence, are trying to act big and denouncing war. The war against war, starts at home... in your own house, town, city and country.
Well.. maybe citing war b/w existing countries in a game may be looked down upon, might as well make em all up.... good ole NOD vs something else.

Equilibrium : It did get some attention here, however it was a limited release. Nice story, kinda slow but some cool concepts and special effects. Robojox : I've alyways liked mecha. and this is the first and only decent movie I've seen which has featured such large mechas. Was cool.. but then again not too many people heard of it.. leave alone watch it Fantastic Four : This movie had been pulled out before it was released, and hence only bootlegged copies are available. An incredibly strong story line which delighted all FF fans. Dark moon rising : An interesting flick featuring a concept car with fancy gizmos and starring tommy lee jones. The scene with the car jumping from one building to another... was fun. Fire, Ice and Dynamite : funnyyy.. :D and entertaining Best of the Best : A fab martial arts flick, a bit more grounded and realistic. better stop here....coz the list is long... very long..... lotsa movies that go direct to video ... miss out on the attention other major releases get. it's like they've decided the fate of the movie... and snatch the decision away from us

  8. Broadcasting technologies on Major League Baseball Releases Webcasting Plans · · Score: 1

I'm kinda curious.... Are baseball live casts tech savvy? For a game like cricket, they have software that analyzes the performance of each player, they have the HAWKEYE - a system with 6 cameras which can predict the motion of the ball in 3d to a precision of 5mm...... do they have technical coverage to such an extent?
Coming to webcasts, why not use a virtual broadcaster? ie a server can covert real-video to basic animation in real time.... which would take up lesser bandwidth. OR, why not conver the movements of each player to simple vectors and plot the ball in real time to have a set of pre-rendered players and ball moving in sync.

  9. The Wrox Level on PHP4 Web Development Solutions · · Score: 1

Wrox books seemed to be aimed at "the professional" who already has some prior knowledge/experience on the topic. That's what makes them a smaller player than OReilly's where you would probably find a book for all occasions. However, for an authoritative guide, I would refer to either Wrox or OR. The Wrox guys are missing out on large markets like operating systems, but then I guess its their business strategy or whatumaycallit.....
OR is the Perl master, would Wrox be the php master?

  11. The trend setter on Second Episode of The Animatrix Released · · Score: 1

The Matrix is to movies what wolf3d or doom have been to games. It has set a trend, a particular style of filming which lots of movies seem to be aping.
Also, the "Into the Matrix" premier was the FIRST ever classy premier, for a game. The concept of hiding particular aspects of the movie plot in the game, is a novel idea. The birth of another trend maybe?
The Animatrix: I found the first one interesting, though they "humanized" the robots a bit too much. Bots with bowler hats... ugh. The second one was impressive, cool graphics and strong similarities with the Matrix movie. BUT... why such a LARGE jump between these two episodes? I thought these animations were to fill the gap... but they seem to have jumped that gap. Maybe the following animations will jump back in the timeline and then jump forward again.
The bottomline.. the Matrix universe has got lotsa people hooked, and its here to stay.. for some time... atleast. (hehe.. mebbe 10yrs down the lane, the W. bros may decide to film 3 prequels.. a la George Lucas)

The Irish have something in common with the Americans. BUT, America takes the cake. For a country, where one doesn't know whether their president was killed by a fellow countryman or a foreign traitor, where they don't know wether Area51 is a top secret UFO something or a big joke, where national secrets are too big to tell to the president himself, it has done remarkably well. Probably, 99% of USA's problems would be solved if the government is frank, honest and open to its citizens ;)

a very interesting subject. Coming to Windows (ah.. I can hear the groansss), s/w like Windows Blinds by Stardock really spruce up the desktop. But the price you pay is very high.. the system becomes sluggish, the boot-up time increases and well.. u end up drumming ure fingers on the table.. However, alternatives like Lightstep (which laymen users may not wanna play with), mess with the shell, and thus provide effecient alternatives to the default GUI, thus making them a prefered option. In case of Linux, s/w such as BlackBox, OpenBox and FluxBox do end up jazzing up the interface.... but is it really worth it ???? A few standard KDE manipulations, usually suffices.. but then again... its all upto each user's discretion.

  16. Technology in India on India's Bargain Supercomputer · · Score: 5, Insightful

    (1) Bill Gates and India
The AIDS donations, and yah, maybe source code sharing and Windows for a bargain.
    (2) The Simputer A handheld pc that runs on Linux and is available for a bargain.
    (3) Reliance and CDMA
Reliance has launched a WLL based mobile phone system which promises high bandwidth, JAVA enabled advanced telephony. AT pathetically low prices !!!!
    (4) The Param Padma
A 16 teraflop supercomputer, faster than many others available.

Coming to think of it, a developing nation seems to have more to look forward to than a developed nation!! That also reminds me that the brain behind many Intel chips is Indian. India lacks infrastructure/proper governance/organization. But it looks like Nostradamus's prophecy of India becoming a superpower may come true... within the next few years.

SGI is still in trouble. I love the company, their concepts, their hot rod machines and the supercool names they come out with..... BUT they are in trouble. And Linux is one of the primary reasons for SGI getting into trouble. A large number of design studios seem to have succumbed to the temptation of a cheaper yet stable machine (i.e Linux Boxes). As some other slashdotters pointed out, these guys are using Macs for the artwork and Linux boxes for the actual bull work. I wonder if SGI can reconquer their old customers and charm even more people.

Bearers can carry tablet pcs, and they check or write ure orders which are automatically registered at the kitchen. Room service will be more effecient, since the maids won't be able to "hide"; they all will be wired.
