Then you have cities like Tokyo which are old castle towns. Basically, the major roads lead out from the palace area. That makes it real easy to navigate...(rolls eyes).
If they want Aliens done right, they should talk to the Unknown Worlds team that created the Natural Selection mod for Half-Life. If there was ever a game that captured the mood and excitement of the Aliens movie, it's NS.
There were rumours of a microphone built into the Remote, has that been substantiated?
The other question is interaction with the DS. There were rumours that the Wii could serve as a download station for games and demos for the Wii and could also be used as a separate controller. Any word on that?
I bought a copy of Quake 2 for my PC and went to install it. I think with all the settings turned down I was getting about 5 fps. I went back to the pc store and was bawling as I forked over a couple hundred dollars for extra RAM and a new video card.
"Bolder yet, one large studio is allowing fans who buy movies online to burn them from their computers onto DVDs, with some protections included, of course."
Why would you need condoms with your porn???
Just to let you know, there is a conventional controller for Wii. It's called the Classic Controller. Basically a SNES controller with two analogs on the bottom. The Wii will also support GC controllers. Nintendo left plenty of options for developers to use standard controllers as well as the WiiMote. They aren't shunning anything. They even stated that the new Smash Bros. is more effectively played with a GC controller than a WiiMote and so it is most likely won't take advantage of the features on the WiiMote.
As for Sony copying Nintendo, I don't think it's a direct copy but I do think that the addition of motion sensors was cemented the day Nintendo announced their goals. Motion sensors have been around for a long time but it's probably Nintendo that will take it mainstream. Sony following suit is a sign that Nintendo isn't the only one who knows you can push graphics only so far. If they were the ones to think of it, at least Sony is willing to not stand idly by.
Seriously though, I can't wait to try out both consoles (though my heart and wallet is set on Nintendo).
I'll have to disagree on that $30 price. The Nintendo Wavebird runs $34.99 new. It only features wireless and doesn't even have rumble in it. The WiiMote has wireless, rumble, gyros, either laser or IR and a speaker not to mention the nunchuk attachment (if that will be part of the controller and not an add-on). Nintendo would be hard pressed to put that into a price of $30.
I'm thinking that the console itself will be $199.99. No problem there, it's cheap hardware and consistent with Nintendo's previous price points. The games, I expect will vary from $19.99 for your average puzzle/sports game to $49.99 for something like Red Steel. I don't expect them to shoot up to $59.99 like PS3 or 360 due to Nintendo's stance on bringing in new gamers. They aren't targeting the hardcore gamer like PS3 or 360. The real kicker will be buying extra controllers/accessories. I'm thinking that the controllers themself have to be at least $50 a pop. There is so much tech shoved into those, I can't imagine they would go for anything less.
Here are some of my personal winners (not that any one really cares):
Best Game: 2K Games Bioshock (what's not to love?)
Best Console: Nintendo Wii (affordable and entertaining!)
Best Presentation: Nintendo Wii (actually having fun during the presentation!)
Best Shot in the Foot: Sony PS3 (I'm sorry, I have to say those prices are ridiculous!)
Even better is someone can develop their games for use with the Virtual Console. If you can write an NES or SNES game, you can write a game for the Wii. Simply put, the Wii will be the easiest and cheapest system to develop for in this next generation. With a $2000 dev. kit, you can have individuals develop games for a profit for the Wii. Games for the Wii won't need 200 person development teams. I suspect that a lot of indie developers are chomping at the bit for this console.
Businessweek reported on April 11, 2006 that about 20 million households have HDTV sets. The U.S. population sits at about 300 million via Wikipedia. The U.S. Census puts the average household at about 3.14 people per home. That's about 100 million homes. So the numbers work out to be 80% without HDTV, 20% with. So my original numbers were incorrect. Sorry.
Blu Ray is probably the biggest reason why the PS3 costs so much. It was a mistake for Sony to push that tech into the PS3. I would say over 95% of the consumers interested in the PS3, are not interested in Blu Ray or HD DVD for that matter. Their home systems can't even handle it. The 5% that can, can go out and buy a stand alone Blu Ray player.
Deathknell for Nintendo? Hung up the towel? You must be joking. You might think that the Wii is a huge risk but the fact is, they aren't gonna lose money on every console they sell like MS and Sony. If the Wii fails, which seems unlikely, Nintendo will still be around and they can easily turn around and create a new console to compete with Sony and MS. Sure, it'll hurt but they won't be dead in the water. Nintendo has always been smarter than that. And at least, they are willing to innovate with hardware. Sure the Virtual Boy was a fantastic failure. But at least they tried. In the long run, it didn't really hurt them either.
If any companies are taking risks this time around its MS and Sony. Both are investing in HD media that hasn't been fully accepted yet. Sony is taking the biggest risk with Blu-Ray which extends across not only their PS3 division but PC and home entertainment as well. If the PS3 doesn't do well, then their foothold with Blu-Ray will fall through and they'll be hard pressed to get the format in the mainstream. They probably stand to lose the most money this time around. But then again, with legions of Japanese consumers chomping at the bit to get at the PS3 and essentially ignoring the 360, Sony can get some of it's money back.
The way I see it right now, MS will dominate in the U.S., Sony will dominate in Japan and Nintendo will make a profit in both regions by being in second place and not taking a loss on each Wii they sell. And the best thing that will happen if Nintendo succedes, Nintendo will have changed the way we play games. In the generation of consoles after this, we'll most likely see more innovative hardware along the lines of the Wii remote, whether on a MS, Sony or Nintendo platform.
Man, I remember those days. We used to get C64 Magazine and I would type in the code to play a game. But I never knew how to save it so everytime I wanted to play the game, I would type it in all over again. Silly but I was 6 at the time... I didn't know any better.
Sorry, it wasn't a big deal to me at the time of the original post. I'm over 18 and I don't live in Oklahoma. However, in hindsight, it does set a bad precendent for other states to follow. It is highly restrictive of free speech which could cause it to bleed into other forms of media such as movies, literature and music. It is reminiscent of book banning which is something I'm totally against. I was hasty in my judgement. Thanks for pointing that out.
You're right, there is no system to determine what is violent, etc. and what is not. If the law isn't specific or has some specific guidelines on how a game is to be judged, it will be pretty weak.
You do make a convincing argument. Perhaps I was hasty in my judgement. In reality, I believe this law is just to make people (18 or older) feel better as it won't stop those under 18 from getting violent games. I'm over 18 and I don't live in Oklahoma so I didn't really care. However, it does set a bad precendent. I believe wholeheartedly believe in free speech, even speech that I find distasteful. The problem is, not many others believe that as well. They believe in free speech as long as it is something they want to hear. With the media targeting violent video games as responsible for things like Columbine and various other incidents, many people truly believe that this is the reason for these violent outbreaks and are willing to restrict this form of free speech to "protect" the children. These are the same people who wanted this bill to pass. These are also the same people who would love to see a law against a 10-year old going to see/buy an R-rated movie or an Eminem album.
Though I dislike the fact that this bill is indeed restricting a form of speech, at the same, it is also trying to get parents to pay attention to what their children are doing which is a good idea. They are just going about it the wrong way.
Seriously, this isn't a big deal. If the kid wants it that bad, they just need to get older. It happens to all of us. Either that or convince someone to buy it for you. The bill makes it illegal to sell to someone under 18 but not give it to them. Even Penny-Arcade agrees.
I'm sorry but the majority of U.S. are the laziest people in the world. There's a reason why all of our industries are getting trounced by other nations. 8 hour work days, 5 days a week and retirement at 65? (Yes, I know there are exceptions to that but that is the average worker) We're seriously overpayed for the amount of work we do. Our education system is going down the drain. Most countries that used to send students to us now have better schools anyways. Our auto-industry is being whalloped by Asian markets because they can produce something better for cheaper, even after import taxes. People also complain about Mexican immigrant workers but the fact is, they work 10 times harder for less money than most U.S. workers, and they do jobs that most U.S. would smirk at. Most U.S. workers are spoiled and it's going to catch up with us real soon. In fact, it's probably already here.
The red-head girl, Jenny Lewis, is a total hottie now with a kick-ass band called Rilo Kiley. That said, the Wizard was the best game movie/marketing scheme ever!

The other reason hitmen avoid headshots is due to prooving the kill. If you blow away the face, the body could be anybody.

I predict the next-gen console wars to start in 2010.

That really doesn't make sense. Slaves don't stop being slaves at 18. You think my logic is dangerous?
