Let me help a little: no modding = no modding.

In the earlier days of my company we had our own building and someone would always be playing their music loud. Sometimes several people would be playing music all at once. When we moved into a shared space building, we all went to headphones. But with us, music is a requirement. If your not using it to get your work done, you are not one of us and you dont belong here. Were all programmers here, we have serious work to do, and our work brings in the cash. Dont fuck with our situation. And if anyone has a question or needs assistance, use im to start the conversation. Always. The owner of the company more then understands this and would get pretty pissed if someone started jacking around with her people. The current 'manager' is a programmer and understands this completely.

My mother works in vaccine research out east. She is an admin assistant working in a cube farm with accountants, organizers, scientists. Her environment is nearly identical to mine. Everyone has headphones and music, everyone uses im out of courtesy to others.

The article seems lost entirely in its own little world and clueless whats going on. Facebook IS farmville, vampire wars, pet society, arena, etc. People join those groups, spam them for invites, and get invites in return to build up their game networks. I know one actual person in my list that doesnt do this, shes in high school and actually uses facebook to talk to her friends and complain about homework. Weirdo.

Now to discuss that people who play facebook shouldn't put too much personal information on their profile is a decent topic. But dont come at it so naive.

i think for the most part this match making on genetics stops at good sex and strong initial attraction. the mentality for a stronger long running relationship is several layers of complexity deeper.

not that dna cares. dna just needs to get its job done. just reproduce, thats all that matters. where we go from there isnt even in the equation.

  13. yeah good luck to you. on The Duct Tape Programmer · · Score: 1

in the last eight years the duct tape programmers that have worked here have cost us more money and embarrassment then we care to think about. we have had meetings where we cant help ourselves but get very angry and loud about the mess they have created. we have slowly identified and rooted them out. in one instance, the programmer gave notice that he was resigning and making a career change due to the amount of problems he caused.

In their place are well thought out solutions that scale upward with minimal ease. where we actually map out what the solution should look like first, identify which tools should be used at each step of the solution, identify and make allowance for the potential changes that will come over the next year, and then begin building from the foundation up. after a year of investment we end up with solutions that are easily repurposed because their components are finished and clean. the ability to duplicate that again and again is where we make the money. we dont have to rebuild anymore, but we charge like we do.

the problem with 'duct tape' programmers is the big umbrella it puts up for the young, inexperienced, fresh out of school kids to hide under and screw up your company. They want to throw in some hours and some code and hurry back outside for recess again. I bet for every 10,000 of those is a single duct tape programmer who is worth having around for the occasional emergency.

My work is programming but its not game related right now. When i get home i code like mad on the dozen different unfinished gaming projects ive rotated between for the last ten years, much of it done during vacations from the office. I have scraps of pieces and parts of games im always trying to work on laying around machines at home and a server at work. Some of it is just modding for morrowind, oblivion, or UT. I may never actually be a game designer for a living. But if the opportunity comes up that i could go contribute to a game project or work for a game company i have no shortage of partially and mostly complete things to show during an interview. And its a mix, some of its directx in visual studio, some of its old junk laying around in c, some of it is just textures and animation collections, some of it is mud or mud like with flash and/or php. Most of the people I come in contact with through my job are the same way, lots of pet projects, server emulators, game mods, whatever, its not like we sat down one day and said hey lets be game designers. It was something that happened with most of us shortly after we got breathing and pooping figured out. Your just that way and you have to be building the shit in your head as quickly as possible or the urge to do it will scratch a hole through your head.

in my house its usually on cartoon network or the news and its just been sitting there playing while we are online, gaming, or doing things around the house. we watch important shows on hulu if we care about it, or we look through ovguide.com, so we can start and stop and go back to previous episodes. we have a tivo someone gave us but never saw justification for the subscription fees.

shows that we really care about and want to keep come in from netflix and copied to external hard drive.

we search for the ultimate device to make use of this collection. that device would read through all the episodes of each show we have and play them back like itunes on random and broadcast those to all the tvs in the house on our own custom tv channel. we dont want to have to pick a show to watch, we just want them all playing on their own and we can either sit down and watch if were interested at that moment or not.

my younger sister lives in an apartment but is rarely ever there because of work or social activities. she just has her laptop with her always and a sprint card. this is how she watches her tv shows and gets her news. if that device gives her whatever she needs, why pay the extra money for something that only works when she is in one particular spot?

the people i know that care about the tivo are older, they are settled into houses, have a big entertainment center hooked up, and do not spend alot of time buzzing about. like my dad, he loves tivo. the difference i think is he specifically spends an hour or more sitting in front of the tv and thats all he does, his purpose is actually to just sit there and watch... just sitting and watching tv would drive me nuts.
