I haven't had any high quality CDRs go bad on me yet. And by high quality I don't mean your bulk spindles, I mean Mitsui Gold, Tai Yuden, Kodak Gold (no longer produced), Verbatim DatLifePlus (stay away from ValueLifePlus), etc...

To be extra safe, I run two CD-R drives to write two copies of the data to two different brands of CDR medias at the same time. Then I also overlap the data for the next batch -- taking half the data from the previous CD, and adding new data to fill the new one. So that any given data is on no fewer than 4 good qulaity CDRs from two different brands/batches.

I also happen to have the a second drive in my computer (not RAID) dedicated to backups and quick recovery. Then there's also an external Firewire portable HDD that is another copy of the backup. I say you can never have too many backups.

This is how I backup my precious photos. For regular data, all of it fits on one CDR so at least once every month I write a full backup to a CDR. The CDR has got to last at one month right?

As for MP3s... that's what P2P is for.. distributed backups.

There's no other way. No fade diet is going to work. I eat plenty of carbs and plenty of meat. Haagen Daaz as mid-night snack? No problem. KFC? Twice a week.

See, the one thing I've learned is that if you are going to make any changes to your life, it better be a change that you can keep up for the rest of your life. Once you fall off a "fad diet" you'll be back worst than you started.

For those who wants to lose a few inches off their waist, skip teh situps and crunches. They've never worked for me. Just lows of low impact cardio exericise and some weight training to increase muscle mass will do it.

It's all CNN's fault. All this hype and hysteria.

At one point Larry King wanted to interview local talk-show host Mike Bullard about SARS. After the pre-interview (i.e. screening process), they decided not to do the interview afterall. The reason? Mike didn't want to tell them the story the way CNN wants to hear it... that everyone in Toronto is getting SARS and that everybody is scared silly.

The truth is, I don't even know a FOAF (friend of a friend) that has SARS. I have not seen anyone wear a mask in public. So how come, every tiem I turned on CNN, there are pitures of people in Toronto wearing asks. Where are they finding these people.

That 10% death rate is inflated. First of all, most of the people that got it was already in the hospital for one reason or another. They count it as a SARS death if there's 1% chance that it was due to SARS.

I live in Toronto, and some think SARS is great. That's right, cheap theatre tickets, low hotel rates, no waiting for a table at your favourate restaurant. Easy to find parking, and there's always the obligatory "SARS discounts". To quote , "WE LOVE SARS!".

But seriously, no offence to the people who have really sufferred from this sickness, but this thing is over-hyped. If you just watched CNN, you'd think everybody in Toronto was getting it left and right. And where the heck do they find all those people with SARS masks? I've been all over Toronto in the past few months and haven't seen one single person wear a mask except on TV (pictures of hospital workers).

This pisses me off because a large portion of my storage needs goes to my own personal digital photso and NOT music. Never mind that almost all of the MP3s on my HDD are ones ripped from my CD collect. The rest that I have doesn't even cover the money stolen by the levies.

Here's something for the "Music Industry" to chew on... I used to buy 2 CDs per month, now I buy none after finally out about the levies. .... And you still owe me money!
