I've started backing up my owning digital photos onto two different brands of CDRs. I plan to repeat this process with my whole collection every 5 years.
Just call me paranoid, but at least with two simultaneous CD writers going at the same time it only takes me about 3 minutes to fill both discs.
It just pisses me off that I have to pay the 21 cents tax per disc in Canada. Almost makes me want to download all the pirated stuff I can find to "get back" my tax.
I just modded your post as being Redundant... not that I thought it was redundant, but I thought that it was funny to mod it redundant..... which makes this whole post redundant....
Never mind the tax. Even if it was "taxes included" and everything was priced at $x.99, a 99 cent coin wouldn't be all that useful if you buy more than one item.
I've seen some retailers solve the "change [roblem" by setting prices that with tax added becomes a nice even number. Usually in 25 cent intervals so they only have to have quarters, loonies and tunies.
On a side note. One of my friend owns a small shop and actually prices her goods at $x.95, taxes included. I asked her if its because it makes people think it's a dollar cheaper even though we all know it doesn't really fool anyone. In reality, she often gets to keep the exact nickel because nobody will bother with the change. You wouldn't think that 5 cents would make a whole lot of difference, but it adds up!
I was in Hong Kong as a tourist last year and picked up one of these Octopus cards. Really neat actually. I bought it to use it for the local transit. Everythign from subway to minibus to ferry and trolley up the mountain can be paid with this card. And if you get hungry to can buy a meal from McDonald's, KFC or one of the HK fast food place (can't remember the names).
The neatest thing of all was when I got thirty and found vending machines that took the same cards. For small transactions, this card was great.
Except in Sony's case it isn't eveyr couple of years. Sony released somethign like 12 new Palm powered Clies last year. It's not even the end of February in 2003 and we already have 3 announced/released (NZ90, SJ33, TG50). There will be more.
Short of replacing MemoryStick with SD, whatever features you think the Sony units are lacking it will appear in the next model, in a matter of months if not weeks.
I agree with some of what you've said but my Sony Clie can do most of these things.
Multitasking on a PDA, what for? Play MP3 while you run another program? I can already do that. On a Plam, I don't lose data that I'm editing when I switch form one app to another... so it really isn't a big deal.
If you want hires, just buy a Sony Clié. No, the biggest change is the move to the ARM platform and the extra power that brings. You don't need OS5 for hires or even playing movies and MP3s. Some of the Sony and AcerPalm powered devices already does this, albeit through a dedicate DSP.
The other major changes are better security with encryption and integrated Bluetooth and 802.11b support.
I use a different email for every site that's insteresting enough to register to use. Recently I've been getting a lot of SPAM from my/. address. It gives new meaning to the term "Slashdotted".
The worst SPAM are the ones you can't even use. My breast need to get SMALLER not larger!! And my penis is already plenty big, thank you. And stop sending me Credit cards I can't apply for because I'm nto an American.
It makes you wonder, even if you had interested parties, how many of those SPAM emails actually makes it to those people at all.
I wished SPAM was as easy to deal with as junk mail. They should really pay for their crime.
What's funny is that I've never read a Xanth novel. I tried picking one up, but it never held my interest like his other novels for some reason.
His first book I read was "On a Pale Horse". From there I went on to read the rest of the Incarnation of Immortality series, as well as the Apprentice Adept and the Mode series.
I've also read few his other books but never a Xanth novel. People that I meet -- the ones that know about Piers Anthony -- always associate him with Xanth.
In Canada, the "official" way is to use D/M/Y, but almost no one does this. Most people just use the American way. I always spell out the month so it's clear. I prefer YYYY-MM-DD format myself.
For Time, I like the 24hr format. "15:00" takes up less space on a report than "3:00 pm". And if it's the last field in a report and the am/pm gets cut off, you have no idea what it really is.
On the topic of units of measure. I always feel sorry for Americans driving up to Quebec. Not only are all the signs in French and you have to deal with the metric system, they also swap the comma and the dot.
Air Canada sometimes do this. When a movie or show isn't playing on the screen they show a live map of where the plane is relative to the ground and your departure/destination. They also throw on info like flight speed, altitude, wind speed, outside temperature etc... It's very useful, especially for those long flights.
If you fly in business/first class it's always available on one of the channels.
Frankly this is much better than having a window since most of the time all you're looking at are white clouds or water.
I don't even bother shopping in the US unless it's something I can't get in Canada (rare). The Former Megadepot.COM used to be really cheap, especially with their weekly coupons. So cheap in fact they probably didn't make any profits and is now out of business. Buy.COM is much of the same so now they've stopped servicing Canadians.
Now the only two sites in Canada I do online shopping is NCIX.COM and ZINGPC.COM. They don't always have the lowest prices, but because they're in a different provinces teh PST savings usually makes up for the difference + shipping.
Is that the same as "Do not mod me +5 Funny" on slashdot?
That's right, it's not just MSN anymore it's Google-FullSpeed!

Please, drive back to the store.
And by Drive you mean WALK right? Because otherwise it's just a bad a problem as chucking the piece of plastic away.

But win = !lose right?
! = opposite?
Or is that !! = You're dead
That's got to be one of the best episode (#166)... especially for those who grew up to Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music.
They originally wanted Julie Andrews to do the voice... that would've made it even more interesting.

Wouldn't they just buy insurance and figure in that as the cost of the whole project?

What about plate shifts etc.. the relative distance between two points on Earth does change, even if it's only a little bit.

No matter how badly you "crash" , you won't get physically hurt!
Seriously though, this article suggests a fair number of manufacturers including BMW use Microsoft based systems in their cars. It's Windows.CE.
PDABuzz has more info and a artist conceptual drawing.
It looks pretty cool in white.
All this fuse and it's not even a particularily good movie, even by wire-fu standards.

These "ideograms" are Chinese characters (aka kanji in Japanese).
They mean year, month/moon, day/sun. I've always found Asian names for month more logical. 1 moon is January, 2 moon is February, etc...
September sounds like it's the 7th month of the year but it's really the 9th. But that's a whole different story in itself.

OK, my Chinese is very limited but it looks like it's trying to say:
"The world standard Chinese Language Linux Operating System. More stable, More freedom."
Although, that's not as funny as the fish translation.
It's not everyday that you hear somebody brag about their porn collection.
