Pure Hacking's Gatford said the problem is compounded by the slim chance of an enterprise patching Java Runtime vulnerabilities.

"It would be an extremely difficult and laborious process for an organization trying to patch Java Runtime across the enterprise," he said.

I agree, but, since when has patching been easier on something else?

Australia's Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT) analyst, Robert Lowe, warned that anyone using the Java Runtime Environment or Java Development Kit is at risk.

Is... is that a threat? A threat from a bogeyman waving a "The End of the Java World is Nigh" sign?

So, you take a drug and make something traumatic in the past go away. My philosophical question of the day is thus:

If reality is perception, and the basis of perception is memory and you can alter memory, are you changing your personal reality and in effect, changing who you are? Is the only cure for trauma personal metamorphosis?

I can understand that there are people who are so traumatized by past events that they require medical attention but is effectively erasing those events from memory the best solution? I guess a follow up question is a drug like this something that will be abused and furthermore, how can I get some of this to dab on past potential girlfriends I said stupid things to?

While it's certainly interesting I have found that adding a computer to the mix (beyond a laptop for the DM with tools like eTools, DM's Familliar and access to the d20srt.org) frequently gets in the way of having a good time. We use a custom made board manufactured at a print shop which has dry erase material on both sides along with the standard 1" grid, we can map everything just fine with a marker and we can flip the board over for tactical stuff with miniatures (or just numbered pennies). The whole thing works brilliantly.

I have a projector and I've tied using various tools for mapping with the computer, but nothing works as well (or as fluidly) as the old "whiteboard".

A side comment about dice rollers, if you make a histogram with the average dice roller you will find that a lot of the time it just isn't as random as the good old fashioned die roll. I say, let D&D stay pen and paper...

Very true, which is why they don't use steering wheels and gas pedals to drive a team of horses.

Office for the most part is the same (in terms of what it does), Microsoft has changed how you use it. I think the griping is coming from a few directions but primarily if Office is the defacto business suite that already maintains a significant userbase changing the UI requires that these people get additional education before they start using tools they already know. Was Microsoft trying to broaden their userbase by adding new UI features to attract even more business (unlikely)? Were they trying to address problems that have been raised by larger customers?

My theory is that Microsoft wanted an Office release with a bunch of really visible changes, which for good or ill has a lot of people talking about the new suite (which is what any software company wants). We already have multiple camps of Office likers/haters and like previous Office iterations most of us will be dragged into the new version whether we want to or not simply because it's too expensive to use something else.
  17. Re:The Grind on Videogames Fill Psychological Needs for Players · · Score: 1

This is the reason I stopped playing WoW after a while, most players were simply interested in achieving higher levels or bigger stats, not actually role playing. Playing WoW I got the feeling that, after a while, all I was doing was hitting an addition button for hours on end. With paper RPG'ing I get social interaction with my peers, a rich story that I am a part of (rather than a bit player of) and we can play once a month without eating up too much time.

Some players tell me that the real content is in the raids & PVP. Well, I can jump into Team Fortress, Unreal or even Tribes to get that experience and I don't have to pay a subscription fee or hit a feed button for days and days.

The challenge I make for the WOW team (or any MMO maker) is to develop a game where players only get a single shot at an instanced zone to foreward their own adventuring. I mean, defeating a mighty dragon is an amazing feat, doing it 10 times in a row against the same dragon is very pointless and cheapens the experience.
