There is a lot of stuff that can be gained and contributed at a LUG. It is a collection of people with a common interest that share knowledge. You can just hang out and listen to the techno babble, or get more involved if you want. The first LUG meeting I went to was like visiting a country where people spoke the same language as I. It's the only place I can say "cat/proc/bus/usb/devices and grep for Vendor" and not get a strange look.
I don't think the results are quite accurate

This article is complete hogwash. It's trying to put a spin on java like it's some kind of over-dressed scripting language for making web pages. The strongest advantage java has over all the others combined is in the 'portability'. You write the code once, and RUN IT ON ANY PLATFORM that has a byte-code interpreter for it. Is it perfectly done? -no. But writing an application on BSD and running the same class files on Windows is priceless in many circumstances. I've done enough socket programming in perl to say it's great for the platform you coding in but expect to be re-writing stuff if you move it to another platform. (Let alone the skull-fucked version of perl that ships with solaris 9) - And I *like* perl, and I also happen to like C, PHP, and assembler also. Each one has it's place where it's merits are unequalled. Each one has things that suck about it. You deal with them and move on because the next sexiest thing coming down the road is going to have it's same share of shortcomings, just like all the rest, be it.net, or mono, or AJAX or ruby or python. Which one would you like to hear? The time I was changing tcp/ip settings on windows nt and it blue screened? How about the time I was installing windows 95 osr1 and it corrupted the filesystem while installing? Or maybe the time that I was installing video drivers in 98 and couldn't get out of safe mode after rebooting? Or maybe you'd like to hear about the time I just finished installing XP and went online to update and got infected with slammer before I even got started updating? Oh, I know, let's talk about the time the Exchange server went down because the boss thought it should updated it to SP1. Or maybe we could cover the jet database crumbling to shit from something called opportunistic locking. Not one time was I ever looking for free sex when these things happened. Stop playing fan-boy and blaming pebkac when you know it's a shitty OS propped up with genious level marketing.

"It's like the Yom Kippur War or Pearl Harbor in the Israeli business market because of the great surprise the victims had when the problem was exposed,"
Hard to believe anything is a surprise in that area of the world anymore.
I don't think people realize the extent of what 'Global Warming' refers to. I'm sure we can thank the media as they turn into Chicken Little whenever someone mentions 'sky' and 'falling' in the same sentance. Don't educate yourself at cnn.com for, well, anything. The news media is whoring drama pimping for ratings, and that is it.
Did you know that the alaskan permafrost hovers right around freezing all year long? When Global Warming affects the earth's temperature causing it to rise just a couple degrees, this inches the 500 some thousand square miles of frozen ground closer to melting. Frozen into this large landmass is thousands of years biological matter which has never had the chance to decay yet. When the permafrost thaws, this matter begins it's decaying process and releases carbon dioxide into the air which accelerates the greenhouse effect even more, raising the earth's temperature even higher.
Part of the problem with the ocean current, as described in the article, is that this current is a large 'pump' which cools the tropics, and warms the arctic (think of a liquid cooled cpu cooler). 'Hot' water from the tropics rises to the arctic which pushes the 'cold' water from the arctic, back to the tropics. It's just a large heat exchanger.
When the earth's temperature rises, the water that is exchaned is warmer which causes more melting of the polar caps (glaciers) in order to cool it. In turn, however, the polar caps begin to receed as they are subjected to higher temps. As the polar caps receed, it exposes more ground cover in the arctic which absorbs more sunlight than what is reflected back off the glaciers that used to be there. This heat absorbtion also, as you would guess, contributes to Global Warming.
So as you can see, saying "it's going to get cold" in western europe is really just the tip of the iceberg. Remember how people figured the Titanic was unsinkable?
And you have very little of it with Microsoft. You do things the MS way, or you are fucked. This is not a 'delusion', stigma, FUD, or misinformation. It is a business model; a very succesful, and well marketed, business model. This is the core interest of Microsoft and the essence of Windows as a whole:
"How do we keep people from making a choice to use something else"
This is the thought process behind your Exchange server, Active Directory, Roaming Profiles, Office documents, OS patches, and Tech support. All wrapped up in a really sexy desktop.

The thing to remember is most CEOs are monkey-see-monkey-do. If another company somewhere is turning huge profits with a non-conventional business (or non-stigmatic) paradigm, they want to do the same. I'll never forget the day back in the early 90s when a boss told me we had to have a 'GUI' even though he didn't know what it was. What google is doing today, may have an impact on how the company you work for runs their business tomorrow.
Nevertheless, he would be pleased.
