I have no idea why the mag's are whining. If anything, this is going to help them. Why? Simple.

First, when people do come across some interesting scientific research, chances are they still won't know what the heck it all means. (Unless they are a person in that field) This is the magazines chance to make a bundle, as they can step in and explain everything.

Second, people are lazy. Chances are that, once again, unless they are in the specific field of research, they won't know, or even care about other discoveries. This again is great news for the magazines, because they collect all the research that has been done and then send it out for people to read, allowing people who wouldn't have otherwise known, or even cared about it, to see it.

I really fail to see the problem with making government funded research open-source. I would say, that if anything, this will help magazines because people will be more interested in it, and there will be more developments since any old Joe can use previous research as a base for his/her own research.

Although if you are looking to download movies, there is a great windows program called "share scan" which scans a network for windows shares and creates and index which you can then search and download from.

For a Linux equivelent, try fast file search, which is actually a web server frontside for an index, which is created by a cron job which scans the network for samba shares.

Let me just say 2 words (that is, assumming I don't get arrested for saying them). Patriot Act. I'm sure Bush would be happy if he found a way to stick GPS tracking on everyone in the country to make sure they aren't "terrorists". He would also be very happy if he didn't have to deal with the election and we just all started calling him "all surpreme dictator Bush". Of course, Bush will spin this to his advantage, telling us that he has created a safer US because now all the 80 year old grandma terrorists are stopped at airport security, as well as all the Democrats.

If you define "Internet" as two or more computers communicating with each other, then it's been around for longer. Hackers at MIT way back when hooked together 2 computers (PDP-11 and PDP-7 I think) and told some professors they had created a chess program. They had one professor sit in one room at the terminal for one of the computers, and the other professor in the other room with the terminal for the other computer. The professors played each other for a while until one of them realized the responses were a bit slow, then saw/followed the wire into the next room where the other professor was sitting!

Assumming that the comic book I have is based of what Lucas wants for episodes 7-9, it looks freaking awesome. And by freaking awesome I mean totally cool. Some more proof that the scripts are already written - In the game "Rouge Squadron" they have a level in which you fight the "World Devastators". These "World Devastators" are also in the comic book I have, and look/do exactly the same thing.
