"The LinuxMCE that ships out of the box has a DVD player and DVD storage built-in, however it only works with DVD's that are not copy-protected with the CSS system. Admittedly this means most commercial DVD's will not work. You can insert a non-CSS encrypted DVD, play it, watch it, hit the 'copy' button to copy it to the server, and then watch it from the server without the physical disk.

If you determine that is legal in your area to do the same thing with encrypted DVD's, there are widely available software add-ons that bypass the CSS copy protection so that encrypted DVD's work just the same as non-encrypted DVD's. You can search the internet for "LinuxMCE libdvdcss" and find links to them, including instructions for Add Software?

I suppose it's time to whip out *my* creds... I am an active member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Let me enlighten you with a direct quote from the prohpet (Bobby Henderson) in his open letter (http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/):

"Some find that hard to believe, so it may be helpful to tell you a little more about our beliefs. We have evidence that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. None of us, of course, were around to see it, but we have written accounts of it. We have several lengthy volumes explaining all details of His power. Also, you may be surprised to hear that there are over 10 million of us, and growing. We tend to be very secretive, as many people claim our beliefs are not substantiated by observable evidence. What these people don't understand is that He built the world to make us think the earth is older than it really is. For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage. We have numerous texts that describe in detail how this can be possible and the reasons why He does this. He is of course invisible and can pass through normal matter with ease."

I hope this clears up this little debate.

Here's an idea: Why not modify the software in a common cash/bank ATM, and place it on a secure network to be a voting booth? Not an ATM currently in use, obviously.

Several of these could even dial into a secure center for processing, just like the ATMs we all frequently conduct banking transactions from daily. For the paper-trail that some people are asking for, the ATM is already designed to print receipts... not a large leap there.

I am making an assumption here, but isn't a large percentage of the voting population already familiar with these machines? And don't we all trust these machines to accurately handle our financial transactions?

I am not an ATM programmer, but I wouldn't think that it would take much to reprogram an ATM for this task... a new option set for the menus, right?

Actually there is a big difference between buying movies and music from iTMS. If we had the same flexibility with movies downloads as we do with music downloads, brick and mortar stores may see a decline in the sales of DVDs.

As it is now, I can buy music from iTMS, then play it from my computer, copy it to my iPod, or even burn a CD, which I can then play in my car, or let my kid borrow to play in his CD player.

If I buy a movie from iTMS, I can watch it on the computer or from my iPod (ignoring the possibilities of HTPCs for the average person).

After that factor in the lack of special features, deleted scenes, blooper, outtakes, behind-the-scenes, etc that you don't get from iTMS

I have to believe that most people do know this, and do care.

If anything, we should all be complaining to Apple and Amazon that we don get a downloadable package of the special features, since the cost is nearly the same. Of course cost vs. convenience goes a long way... just look at the price of milk at 7-11 vs. a grocery store.
