Both of the major political parties have devolved into businesses, which sell our tax dollars to those who can pay. The words that come out of their mouths are just "advertising" to entice the people to vote for them. On occasion, we actually hold them accountable for their deceptive advertising, but not very often. It is basically Coke vs Pepsi, where the cola who's ads appealed to the most voters, gains power and gets to wallow in, and sell, our tax dollars.

  5. These cards are a win / win on Airlines Make More Money Selling Miles Than Seats (expressnews.com) · · Score: 2

I have been using a "rewards" card for a few years now. I pay $89 a year for the privilege. I use this card for just about everything, from groceries to monthly bills. I pay my balance in-full every month, so with the 3-week grace period, I'm only paying a couple dollars interest each month. The bank makes money off of it. I get much more than the $89 + a few bucks interest out of it. I usually rack up about $800 in rewards every year, plus I am insulated from fraudulent purchases (twice last year, "my card" was used in the Cayman Islands to buy gas). So, they're paying me about $650 a year (in rewards, which I can use against my balance) to use their card, AND I get fraud protection. If they're making some money too, I'm fine with that.

When travelling with my wife and our 1 year old, I found it is well worth it to buy our daughter her own seat, so we take up all 3 seats in the row. It is cheaper to do this, than to book 2 business class or first class seats, and it gives us (my wife and I) just enough extra ass room to be relatively comfortable. It also gives our restless 1 year old some much needed room.

  15. Re:Why not let the market sort this out? on US Lawmakers Propose Minimum Seat Sizes For Airlines (consumerist.com) · · Score: 1

"The Market" is the reason for undersized seats. The airlines get to spread the cost of operating the flight over more seats/fares, allowing them to lower the cost per fare (in theory), and giving them an edge over the competition. The customers book the cheaper flights, so the competition has to follow suit. It's finally, over the past few years, been getting to the point that the customers are fed up with being cramped up. I live in Charlotte, and have family in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Washington (state)... I'm also 6' 2" and a fit 210lbs. I don't mind being shoved in a sardine tin for the 90 minute flight to Cleveland... but the 4+hour flight to Seattle sucks. I digresses significantly, but my point is, when the market is broken, sometimes it takes legislation to stop the "race to the bottom".

About 12 years ago, the company I worked for got bought, and during the integration process, I worked with a guy who would later become my boss. This guy was brilliant, and knew the nuts and bolts of telecom better than anyone I'd ever met (or have ever met since). He was wonderful to work with. He was respectful, helpful, and understanding. After we finished merging our systems, and are going forward as a single business, I get promoted to work under him and had to move to Rochester, NY (new HQ). Working FOR this guy was the worst. From day 1, he was verbally abusive, overly demanding, and was demanding 90-hour weeks, for a salary that was not meeting my basic living expenses in NY state, so I was slowly going into debt during this time, just to pay rent. The last straw was when I came back to my desk from the bathroom, and he was standing there waiting for me. All I did was go pee, and he went into a 20-minute tirade at me, in front of the whole office, about how if he is looking for me, I'd better to hell be at my desk. That weekend, I rented a U-haul, moved back to Charlotte, gave him my notice, and worked it remotely.

  20. Just like Haynes manuals for cars on Apple Will Fight 'Right To Repair' Legislation (vice.com) · · Score: 1

Rather than force Apple to provide this, I'd love to see companies like Haynes and Chiltons get into the phone repair manual business. Their manuals for automotive repair have always been based on a complete tear-down and rebuild, rather than the manufacturer giving them any instructions, and they could do the same for phones. This would also create a demand for OEM parts to use, the tools for performing the repairs, and places to sell them. This free market solution would create a lot of jobs, and just like with cars, people would still buy new phones every few years, when it grows tiresome to keep repairing their existing one. Unfortunately, corporations care nothing for the free market, except for whichever aspect of it contributes to their bottom line on whichever given day. They will just continue to use their money to fight for or against laws, as they benefit or threaten them, without any regard to right and wrong, or consistency.
