Re:not meant to be
The Joltage homepage isn't much help -- it's in place, but content-free. Any other Joltage customers who can comment on this?
Well, the google cache still has the old home page, and from their all the navigation still appears to function, including the registration page etc.
It makes me chuckle when a site only kills the homepage. How hard is it to move the whole site to a new directory, assuming you want to discourage visitors from seeing old content? -

Found in the google cache: 20 Years Later Space Shuttle Columbia is Better and Safer So with all these reports of a possibly ageing shuttle fleet (problems before the launch of the Columbia; possible damage during its launch), what's the use of endangering humans in "manned space exploration"? AdvergamesUmm.... sort of like.. Mick and Mack Global Gladiators(McDonalds) the game where Ronald McDonald uses his evil, clown powers to sent two kids into a hellish comic book universe where they must collect McDonald's logos and avoid being covered in slime?
Or how about Cool Spot where you play the spot on the front of the 7-Up can?
Oh, and if you are Japanese, you might enjoy the "Pepsi-man Game."
This of course ignores games that have advertising placed in them, like Nike or Red Bull ads.

weezer and the podIt's interesting to note that Weezer (certainly a guitar-driven band) has been touring with PODs instead of Marshalls lately, though they use real amps in the studio. PODs are certainly a lot more convenient to lug around than Marshall stacks, but, in that interview, the band's frontman makes the claim that they sound better in a messy arena environment.
Actually, I've recently heard Weezer has quit using the PODs live. Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this suspicion?

SeaQuest DSV
Seaquest is coming true.. I wonder if it comes with an ultra smart dolphin who has a translater hooked to it so i can have conversations with it.
I wonder if it comes with an "elite" password cracker otherwise known as Lucas Wolenczak. Yes, the man who could guess your password, no matter how complex, in three tries or less.
Be aware ladies, despite his youthful looks, he's actually 29! -

Re:Giving Out Source
This whole new policy of Microsoft's makes me really wonder how much they value their source code. They're not so stupid in Redmond to think that there won't be leaks if they start offering the code for free to any government that asks.
Indeed, the recent DarkNet (Google
.doc -> html) paper from their own reseach division predicts exactly this:If there are subverted hosts, then content will leak into the darknet. If the darknet is efficient, then content will be rapidly propagated to all interested peers.

You are forgetting something
First, every time we buy a blank CD, DVD, VHS, or even audio cassette tape we are helping them out. There is a tax which we, in the US, pay every time we purchase any of the above. We also pay it every time we buy a radio, TV, or even a computer. So - we lose.
Every time we rent a CD, DVD, VHS, or even game cartridge - we are (again) paying this tax. So we lose there also.
Should we buy a book, a script, magazine, newspaper, or the like we are probably still paying this tax. So we've lost again.
Finally, even if everyone in the US refused to have anything else to do with the RIAA or MPAA they are still powerful enough to have new laws passed. As in "Atlas Shrugged," by Ayn Rand, if they can not take our money legally - then the thing to do is to change the laws so they can take it legally. After all - laws are nothing more than rules by which we play and those who have the money usually get to make the rules.
Sorry if this shocks anyone but the truth is that it is only because we respected each other, had a unified common sense approach to things, a scrupulous populus, and the knowledge that if you did wrong you would be held accountable for it - that we have made it this far. The "Anything goes" way of looking at things, not holding people's feet to the fire for doing something wrong, and (as bad as it might seem) not being willing to put to death those who really are doing terrible things to others (like Enron's execs who have ruined hundreds if not thousands of people's lives) that has caused us to come to this. What these people are doing is, IMHO, treasonous. Look it up. The act of "Treason" is where two or more groups (whether they be people, organizations, corporations, or whatever) attempt to remove the rights of their fellow citizens. According to the texts it is their "intentions" which merit this stamp So ask yourself this - what are their intentions when they attempt to force upon you their yoke of slavery? What are their "intentions" when they try to sneak, like theives, laws into Congress which remove our rights and preserve or expand upon their rights. What are their intentions? Those intentions are to take away your rights.
Now, someone will probably say "You don't go around killing people just because they are trying to get laws passed." That's true. You don't. Normally. But this is different. It is different because they are not trying to get laws passed for the betterment of mankind or to right an injustice. No. They are trying to twist the laws and our country (Heck! The world even!) to their needs. To enslave it. To enshackle it to their beliefs. Just like some religious cults have tried to enslave others to their will. It is an evil thing to do and it will have terrible consequences if it is allowed to endure.
Even if they were only brought up on charges it would shake up the corporate world enough that many things companies are beginning to attempt to do through the rewriting of our laws would be stopped. Companies would think twice about trying to change laws so they benefit only them and remove our rights. Which brings up - why do groups think they can get away with this? The answer is - they have in the past. The difference is the internet. Whereas before there was this huge time lag between when something happened and when we knew about it - now it only takes hours or minutes for word to be sent and a transgression found out. The problem is still though the complancey of many of the people in our country. "Oh! I might get involved." some whine. "I don't have the time." another chats. "It's not my place." a third comments. If you don't stand up and write your congressmen/women then you are already shackled. You already bear their mark. You already curl up at their feet, lick their hands, and eat the crumbs they throw to you.
So as always the question is - what are you going to do about it? Wallow in the filth on the floor or write and demand that these groups stop trying to infringe on your god given rights! -

Tivo's revised service agreement.
This is Tivo's new service agreement in PDF, and here is Google's copy of Tivo's service agreement converted to HTML.
Unfortunately I'm unable to dig up the agreement I originally signed on for to comparision, but the following are changes from the previous agreement:
2. The TiVo Service. The basic TiVo service consists of program guide information and the following features:
... Season Pass... WishList... Smart Recording... TiVo Suggestions... Parental Controls. This is fairly subtle, but the previous agreement basically just said that service consisted of program guide information. Nothing else. The other features were implicitly part of the unit you purchased. Sure, the features weren't terribly useful without guide information, but if you could find another way to provide guide data those feature would work. Now they're claiming that if you fail to pay you have no rights at all these features which are entirely managed within the unit.
3. Changes to Your TiVo Service. TiVo may, at its discretion and from time to time change, add or remove features and functionality of the TiVo Service or the TiVo DVR (when the TiVo DVR access TiVo's servers) without notice. If you are dissatisfied with any such changes to the TiVo Service, you may immediately cancel your subscription as provided in section 13 ("Termination of Service").
Given the helpful definitions of features in the previous section, TiVo is clearly reserving the right to remove Season Passes, WishList, Smart Recording, TiVo Suggestions, Parental Controls and other functionality. Sure, it seems unlikely that they'll take such features away, but why are they asking for the right to? Those are specifically the features they advertised the Tivo as having, and the reason I bought mine.
But I can terminate the service if I don't like it? Given the new changes, my Tivo effectively becomes a giant paperweight. And (checking Section 13), my lifetime subscription that I paid for before this change will not be refunded in any way, so I'm especially S.O.L..
10. Using the TiVo Service.
... you agree not to tamper with or otherwise modify the TiVo DVR.The rest of the section is pretty reasonable, but this little clause is unreasonable. I purchased my Tivo specifically because they were very open and had a "You void your warrantee, and we won't support you, but feel free to hack on your Tivo" policy. I wanted to support that behavior. This effectively reverses the decision. No more hard drive expansion hacks. To heck with that.
11. Advertising and Promotions.
... In order to send such content, you agree that Tivo may tune your Tivo DVR to a particular channel at a particular time.In practice it looks like they only use this to record the silly promos I see on my main menu. That I don't mind. What I do mind is that this implies that they can preempt my normal recording to record their ads. That I object to. I doubt they ever will preempt my programming, but why not state as much in the policy?
12. Definition of Product Lifetime Subscription.
... Of course, hardware products don't last forever and their lifespan will vary. When I purchased a lifetime subscription, I understood that the lifetime in question was for the unit, not me. I figured it just meant that if the system failed I'd need to pay to get it repaired. This working left me fearing that they may claim that once a Tivo experiences any failure that they can claim that its lifetime is over and cancel the service. Since my Tivo actually experienced a modem failure nine months into its life, this seems like a real risk to me. (On a related note, it looks like Tivo modems are fragile, thus products like this one. Get your Tivo on a phone line surge supressor!)
I brought up all of these complaints to Tivo support when I became aware of them. I got a form letter back that failed to address the issues I brought up. Feh.

Re:Curious about SPARC...
There's some info related to the SPARCLite here
.There's also some on Fujitsu Semiconductor's Web site as well.
Is this related to the embedded Java processor Sun announced a while back?
No.
I never read up on that, and I wasn't sure if they really meant it was running Java bytecode, or if it was merely a processor that was well-suited for Java. Native bytecode sure sounded unlikely.
"Sounds unlikely" does not necessarily imply "not true"; picoJava does, indeed, run Java bytecode as a native instruction set - or, at least, did, or was intended to; I can't find anything from Sun's home page that speaks of them selling any processors other than UltraSPARCs. A Google search for "Sun Microelectronics" found, as the topmost hit, a page for UltraSPARC processors, so perhaps they've killed off picoJava and microJava (I think microJava might not have had bytecode as its native instruction set), along with the MAJC chip (some VLIW thing) they were working on at some point. (You can still find stuff about picoJava, microJava, and MAJC on Sun's web site from the search box, but the papers you find look suspiciously orphaned.)

Re:Curious about SPARC...There's some info related to the SPARCLite here. It claims that Fuji's SPARCLite core is used in a large number of embedded devices.

Sad but true.Unfortunately, Windows is way too big to fix, as are too many of the major applications that run on it, and security isn't something you can just patch on after the fact. Some of the newer versions, such as XP, don't crash anywhere near as often, which suggests that maybe enough major parts have been rewritten that many of the old bugs have been discarded and replaced with a smaller number of newer bugs.
One of the things that annoys me the most is the number of reported holes that are caused by buffer overflows. There's simply no excuse for them this decade! If you don't have a good enough quality control process to test for them all, and MS doesn't, you shouldn't let your people write code in C! Don't get me wrong - I really *like* C, and I've been using it for over 20 years. It's a great language for a lot of things, including compact, efficient, clean, obvious code, and it does let you shoot yourself in the foot. But if you can't keep your people from shooting, and can't tell where the holes are, and can't tell whether all your feet are intact, it's not the language for you. And if you want to use C++ or C-- or C-sharp or C-dull, and you don't enforce the use of safe I/O and copying methods, don't do that either. (By the way, this rant applies to Linux as well.)
Esther Dyson has her signature-line about "Always make new mistakes". Buffer overflows and testing for maliciously formatted input aren't new mistakes, folks! They're CS100 material, the first thing you should be learning after you learn how to do arrays and input functions. (And I learned my programming in PL/I, an language that won't let you overflow buffers.) At least make the bugs interesting, like race conditions or something! Accepting input that abuses
..s in directory paths when they shouldn't be there isn't a new mistake, and it's one of the most common bug reports I see that aren't memory-related. -
people who don't get it
After reading the Penny Arcade comic and checking out the site to convince myself it was a joke, I did a google search. Most of the results are foreign language pages, (evidently, "mavav" means something in a slavic language) but the first two that come up are these, people taking this way too seriously:

Well okay ... BUT... first off this is actually opinion-laden so it might possibly be viewed as trollish or flamebait, but I hold true that these are my true beliefs
...My main concern is that the Free Software Foundation doesn't deserve a cent of my money, or any of your money for that matter. The entire organization is ran quite similarly like the dictator third world countries we all hate. Don't believe me, why don't you go read any interview of the makers of Gnome (now Ximian) or linux kernel developers.
Read here, Linus basically likes free software not because it's so super politically cool, but for other reasons like most software to him sucks so he likes to make it work for him and if he uses it he doesn't have to worry about it not staying free. Hell Miguel de Icaza is working on a
.Net for linux called Mono, how much more not free software do you need to be.The FSF is a wonderful idealistic thing that doesn't take into account that we're not a communisitic or remotely socialistic soceity in the "developed world". And I can say developed world, because lets face it, poor third world countries don't need computers or source code to look at.
If you are able to spend $10 a month I would highly encourage a donation to your favorite opensource project, political party, or charity, it will be money well wasted on the FSF.

National and State DO NOT CALL registriesThe Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry will be found at
www.ftc.gov/dotnotcall according to this.
Reasonably good lists were available, but are being revised. Luckily cache's are available here goes:
- Google Cache of State Do Not Call lists which has been relaced by FTC List of State Registries
- The DMA's list Useful cache versus the Real soon now revised list
Interestingly in 1995 the FCC
require[s] that [telemarketer's] do-not-call request records must be maintained for 10 years after a request is
made.
even more stringent restrictions were thought of by Congress in 1991.
Back in 1991, Congress instructed the FCC to investigate providing a National Do-Not-Call database,
According to the 1991 law, US Code
The regulations required by paragraph (2) may require the
establishment and operation of a single national database to compile
a list of telephone numbers of residential subscribers who object to
receiving telephone solicitations,
Unfortunately, the FCC decided the National Database was too difficult/expensive to implement, though they are all for it now.
Fun whining and some valid concerns about the new rules by telemarkers, phone and computer companies can be viewed at New Rules would hurt us
For Paper Directories, my favorite is Alaska's Blackdotwhich allows
"Do Not Call Law"(Alaska's Black Dot Law)
AS 45.50.475 prohibits telephone solicitation of persons identified in a telephone directory as not wishing to receive telephone solicitations. These telephone customers have a "black dot" by their name in the directory. The statute also requires local telephone companies to provide a list of "black dot" customers to telephone solicitors who request one.
For a small fee, your local telephone company will identify your residential listing in your telephone directory with a- black dot.
- This informs telephone solicitors that you do not want to receive telephone solicitations.

Not good news, for now anyway...Sadly, this does not amount to very good news. The Metrowerks acquisition comes only eight months after Lineo was forced to recapitalize (translation: they were broke), which itself came only a month after Lineo laid off over a third of its workforce. For one of the first and best-known embedded Linux companies to go under like this does not shine a good light on the industry.
Meanwhile, a glance at Metrowerks website shows the company leaning strongly toward PDA applications, the market for which has been slumping as of late, and, as Gartner Dataquest's analysis tells it:
PDAs are entering a period in which they will be embraced by enterprises as core infrastructure, like PCs.This portends a gradual shift away from Palm and toward Microsoft. Although Palm devices remain more prevalent in enterprises, Microsoft has been adept in providing the building blocks enterprises require. Most companies Gartner talks with are moving with, or planning to move with, the Microsoft wave.
Note that the idea of Microsoft getting a leg up in "core infrastructure" integration means that the company also poses a threat to embedded applications for such "smart devices" as portable phones and videoconferencing technology.Though the overall outlook may seem bleak for these companies, a winner is someone who can look a challenge and see an opportunity. As a libertarian, I am anti-monolpoly, and thus I hope Metrowerks' leadership can show the kind of vision needed to put Lineo's intellectual capital to good use in counteracting the Microsoft menace.
